Both my vets are women.

Not the most compelling slate of employment options.

I am amazed at how little vets make. As medical doctors I presumed they were better paid.

I am amazed that a man with your superior intellect doesn't know that education and compensation are not necessarily correlated.

The vets I know make a crap ton more than indicated in that article.

That's right about in the middle of the different vets I know.

I am stunned that someone who has bonded with Jen Lada in the way you have would not have RTF statement which includes the important caveat of vets being medical doctors

I think there is a range based on market and possible clinical practice focus. We have horses (we being the royal we as I didn't wake up saying I want horses) and the vets who care for them seem to do alright.

Unlike bread and butter vets, who have clinic-based practices and see a range of animals, I think equine vets have lower overheads since their office is a Ford F 250.

I liken that focus as being akin to the airline which employs just one airframe (ie Southwest flying just 73s) which limits spare parts inventory, training costs, etc...

How does that refute what I said in any way?

Feel free to cut and paste an answer from another source and pass it off as your own words.

One of my co-workers has a son that is an equine vet working primarily at a top race track.  My understanding is that he is extremely well paid.  Then again, he's at the absolute pinnacle of his profession.

I think our vet is doing just fine. I don't think her fees are out of line for the work she does and I know she has a thriving practice in Seattle Horse Country.

What's interesting is that theBabyDavid's mother took out a health insurance policy for the horses which actually covers most of the costs of care - crazy that in America farm animals have access to better health care than some humans.

Of course, she grew up on a ranch in Idaho and I grew up in the Hiroo section of Tokyo so what do I know about horses?

I've also been under the impression that vet school is harder to get into than med school.  Less options and not a bunch of lower end options in the Caribbean for example.  But I imagine, as others have said, there is likely a ton of variability.

Supply and demand at work.  My guess is that the overwhelming majority of vets are huge animal lovers.  It's their dream job, so they don't mind that they aren't paid massive sums of money.  How many kids say they want to be a gastroenterologist when they grow up?

I recently got a large breed dog that can have some notoriously high health care costs, particularly as they age, and I ran the numbers on getting her insured.  I ultimately decided against it, but it was a close call. I don't know what year over year trends are in vet costs (and likely with them, vet compensation) but I wouldn't be surprised if 5 years from now, I'd pull the trigger on the insurance.

Honestly, on the medical side, the number of doctors is kept artificially low compared to demand. There are many kids that dream of being any kind of doctor, have superb grades and scores 99% of the US population could never achieve, but are not able to get into medical school, because of artificially low number of seats.

Often we then end up with the doctors that hate actually being a doctor, but did it for the money.

Its pretty crazy.  I always think about it when I encounter a bad or apathetic doctor.  I had a gf in college I'm still good friends with.  All she wanted to do was be a doctor.  Even transferred schools to improve her overall GPA.  Graduated with a 3.8 from a very good undergrad school, worked in an outside medical lab her last 1.5 years of school, didn't have a stellar MCAT score, but if it was an LSAT score, it would be the difference between going to BC or IU law school, compared to Northwestern, so still quite good.  She didn't get accepted anywhere.  Even went and got a Masters in Public Health from a great grad school.  Reapplied, waitlisted to a mediocre med school but otherwise no dice.  She was 25-26 by that point and said screw it and is now a very successful researcher.  Med school acceptance is a wild game

Several of my son's classmates went through the process this past year.  One aspect that I didn't know about was that medical schools generally require in-person interviews.  Applicants can end up spending an awful lot of money traveling for interviews.  Given the technology available these days, it seems ridiculous to require these students to travel across the country for an interview.

Dairy vets are in the same boat.  But it is really hard on the body.

Good friend of mine was a very successful dairy vet, but when his youngest graduated from college, he said "F*ck it" and went into vet pharma sales.  He said his body couldn't take much more of that work.

Actually I don't have much to do with the horses. I spend the week in Seattle and riding a horse isn't how I want to spend my free time.

We recently got a Pony of the Americas for the boy but he's still too young to ride. I am guessing I will have to be involved in that in some way next year.

What I find amazing and disheartening is that we have, in 2019, a thread called "10 fastest growing jobs for women."

The only acceptable, reasonable answer to this comment should be, "anything a woman wants to be."

Look, I have a son and a daughter. I have said since my children were young that I expect my daughter to have the same opportunities in life as my son. Nobody is saying either will have it easy but I've yet to discern why having ovaries and a uterus should be a disqualifying element of a job opportunity.

Generations ago, braun mattered. With automation, hydraulics, mechanization etc., today's workforce values mental over physical. And in case you guys think I'm wrong, look at the percentage of college students today who are women. And, last I checked, there are at least as many women in engineering and business schools as there are men.

I’m curious when and where you last checked. Because I just checked and in 30 seconds found data suggesting that is it was about 20% in engineering. In about 2 minutes found data showing that they’ve made advances in MBA programs, but still about 45%. I suspect it might be better in undergrad business, but didn’t find that number in a quick search.

You realize it's the "10 fastest growing jobs" which is based on statistics.

It's not "10 best jobs for women".

I Googled “10 Fastest Growing Jobs for Men” and only got “Fastest Growing Jobs”. As an aside, that says something. Anyway, the women’s only list sounds more appealing generally. I’d rather be a vet than a bicycle repairer or a wind turbine blade installer.

I tried it in Belgium about a year ago. My rep’s younger brother is a butcher and insisted when we had a grill out. It wasn’t bad. They don’t eat it that often at all. It reminded me more of venison than beef. Interestingly, it becomes more tender and flavorful as the animal ages unlike many animals, so it’s older animals that are targeted for consumption. Not a veal or chicken situation.

Crash, dropped you a PM BTW.

Living in Asia one encounters a wide range of animal life on the plate. And in survival training I have choked down various forms of mammal, reptile, and insect.

I have never been squeamish about eating off-grid meat but it's definitely the exception.
