Haven't gone crazy with it like some people have but have managed to get up to level 9 without playing a ton.

Protip, if you don't feel like walking around to hatch the eggs, sit in your basement. It'll screw up your GPS enough to where your guy will be walking around everywhere.

I haven't played it once.

But.

Multiple generations are playing it.

u want to sleep and play Pokemon Go and have no interest in the carnal knowledge of the opposite sex....I take everything back....clearly you're a 10 year old boy in real life ;)

In all seriousness, I'm a 35 year old that plays video games (XBox with the occasional laptop jaunts) so not unfamiliar with gaming and I don't have an F'ing clue why anyone would want to play Pokemon Go over the age of 16. I've seen it in action and once you get over the augmented reality function it's generally a time waste of a game (worse then most games which are by definition time wasters)

I've been gaming since I was 5.  I was programming my own stuff on the Apple //c when I was 7.  I've been PC gaming since 10; I've been multi-player gaming over networks since high school (back when the "internet" was only found inside your swim trunks).  I have/had every Nintendo system beginning with the NES except the Virtual Boy and DS.  I've geocached on several occasions over the last decade or so.  I don't read instruction books, and technology isn't difficult for me.

I downloaded Pokemon GO last Thursday at around 6:30p.  It was deleted before 7:00p.

My take is that Pokemon Go is the soccer of video games... it's easy to learn and fun to play only for people who lack the talent and/or fortitude necessary for more complex games.  And you're looking down 95% of the time while playing.

Checked it out briefly to see what the hype was about, but too much real world time needed for my taste. That said, I love that its popular. One more indicator that nerd culture is becoming acceptable in the mainstream. I grew up with Marvel Comics, AD&D, and my share of anime (I liked Ruruoni Kenshin more than the relatively plotless Pokemon). Nice to see the traditionally uncool things of my youth becoming cool.

As far as gaming it's obviously not really a game in that sense. Just fun to try to collect all the different Pokemon. Think of it like finding all the secrets/Easter eggs without the gaming part. The grocery bagger at my local grocery store called me sir so...

I wonder if the family of the first person killed by a pokemon go driver can sue the hell out of Nintendo.    A family may have a big pay day coming.

"A driver was injured Tuesday night in Auburn after crashing while playing Pokémon Go.

Auburn Police responded to an accident around 10:45 p.m. ET to find a vehicle that had gone off the road and struck a tree. The driver admitted to actively playing the Pokémon Go game while driving, which caused him to be distracted."

I doubt that they would have much of a case against Nintendo. They didn't create the game.  They only  licensed the characters.

First, you are correct that I can't call others out for bad grammar if I don't have good grammar. Having said that there is a difference between mistaking then and than (or there, their, they're) and changing break to brake. My commentary was entirely around the current teenage culture of using wrong words intentionally in place of the right words (or so my brother who's a high school teacher tells me)

How is that different? We both used words that sound the same but have different meanings. Anyway I'm sure you know the difference between then and than. I know the difference between break and brake. My fingers and your fingers typed out something out of muscle memory likely incorrectly. Who really cares I'm typing quickly on my phone? I am assured by my sources that there is a distinction for teenagers, but as I'm not a teenager I can't articulate them myself. It is now clear that you are not since you can't make the distinction....apparently you passed the Voight-Kampff, well done. I retract all previous accusations.

It's a chicken or an egg thing. Nerd money comes as a result of nerd popularity because of nerds being accepted and in some cases preferred over "normal" culture i.e. jocks and BMOCs. I will say I believe this is a direct result of the pushing of STEM generally and to females in particular which is great.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree. Look at Big Bang Theory, Pokemon Go, Avengers or even Star Wars. Things that would have been a subculture 20 years ago are now mainstream, in fact, you can even be made fun of for not being involved in some of those things.

Money does tend to marry money, but nerd money was always a peg or two below more traditional forms of money. Now nerd money is on par with trust fund or acting or musician or sports money.

And if the local Cosplay leader has access to meet a VS model it could happen, just like if a low level marketing person at a fortune 500 company could meet and marry a VS model.

Pokemon GO isn't nerd... nerds aren't going to waste time or space on Pokemon GO.

Sheldon will make some sort of analogy regarding Pokemon GO being to society what Scott Bakula was to the Star Trek franchise in the upcoming season... bank on it.

I don't play but my kids do - probably because my kids aren't old enough to have their own phones so they are monopolizing ours.  Aside from my general 'to each his own' POV three things that i like about Pokemon Go are:

1 - Tower alluded to this but we are interacting with WAY more of our fellow Kansas City residence than we normally would.  Last Saturday on the street car, at the farmers market and at lunch we had pleasant conversations with others that started with Pokemon Go and most of those conversations were with 20 somethings that, for a variety of reasons, we never would have had interaction with.

2 - As the first 'popular' augmented reality game it is pretty easy to see that in 5-10 years there will be some awesome adaptations/evolutions in both equipment and apps.

3- google glass sales should benefit from Pokemon Go and would help ease peoples safety concerns.

I took my 18 year old granddaughter down to the lake in Kenosha (we live in Racine) to hunt Pokemans or whatever it is they do. She got phone numbers of half a dozen different kids that she is now texting on a daily basis. Much better way to meet kids their age than most methods.

Can anyone give me a parents' guide intro?

My 8 year old has been catching them, etc .. it's classic for him to start a game full-force, then realize there's actual strategy that needs to be learned, so he just wanders, not realizing all aspects of the game .. leading dad to understand the game to teach it down.  I've tried to find simple videos on the subject, but they often seem to wander.

Questions -

Is there any reason you'd have more than one copy of a guy?   I'd imagine you transfer all extra copies of lesser cards so your biggest CP card could use the "candy"?

Also need an explanation of gyms and fighting .. if you found a gym with some super powerful dude, there's no point fighting and losing, right?

And how do you fight?

Gyms i still don't understand. Usually there's no point to keeping duplicates except for 2 exceptions. With the evee's you want at least 3 of them so they evolve into their other evolutions and sometimes ill evolve a bunch of duplicate pidgeys, or weedles for the experience boost

The guy is going to be OK, but in California, a man playing Pokemon Go was stabbed. The man said, "It was terrifying. My lack of a life flashed before my eyes."

Questions -

Is there any reason you'd have more than one copy of a guy?   I'd imagine you transfer all extra copies of lesser cards so your biggest CP card could use the "candy"?

Yep, transfer the lower powered pokemon for candy to Evolve your highest CP pokemon.

Pokemon caught in the wild level up with your trainer level up to trainer level 30, that means that the wild pokemon you catch will continue to be more powerful than the pokemon you are catching and evolving. Because of that, it's not really worthwhile to do anything except for bank your stardust until your trainer is level 30, and start doing power-ups at that point.

Also need an explanation of gyms and fighting .. if you found a gym with some super powerful dude, there's no point fighting and losing, right?

Gyms are useless until you're high level and can defend the gym. If you own a gym you can go into the Shop, and in the upper right-hand corner you can collect your defender bonus. Every day you defend, you get a bonus.

Fighting is fun though! Especially since pokestops give you so many potions and revives. Each gym has a level associated with it, and the gym's level determines how many pokemon can be stationed at that gym. If the gym is owned by the good guys you can 'train' your pokemon at the gym. Each pokemon stationed at the gym that you beat gives you a little bit of XP and it increases the level of the gym. At bad-guy gyms you can knock-down the gym's level by beating one or more pokemon stationed there. The lower level the gym, the more manageable it will be to take it by someone that's more powerful on your (or another) team.

And how do you fight?

First you choose the pokemon that you're going to fight with. If your kid has played previous pokemon iterations, they're probably familiar with which types are strong/weak against which other types.

When you're fighting, you can do three things:

If you want to dig deeper, this is a great writeup by a level 22 trainer: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4snrnu/lv22_player_giving_small_tips_of_advice_also/

Truth. It's fun, and it helps me relate to the younger people at work. Gotta keep up with this stuff if you're going to be "one of the guys" at a software company :)

As part of my family road trip to Milwaukee we stopped in Springfield, IL to tour the Lincoln Home National Park.  The ranger gives the speech beforehand about no cellphone use all in the house.  To Please be respectful.  No more than 5 minutes later some guy has to get scolded by the ranger who told him that "No cellphone use includes Pokeman Go."

The wife and I stopped at Devil's Lake State Park on our way back from Minneapolis to break up the drive for lil' MU03ENG and get a hike in. We were coming down the bluff trail as a group of 6 people were coming toward it, youngest had to be mid-30s oldest in the 60s, all of whom were staring at their phones talking about things like "oh I already got 3 of those guys" or "I can't believe how many Pokemon there are here".

I didn't know whether to throw them or myself off the bluff.
