What's next for Wojo?
« on: March 19, 2021, 03:32:58 PM »
I know, I know, who cares, not our problem anymore, etc. etc.

But I wonder where his next stop will be?  A mid-major?  Back as an assistant (at Duke or elsewhere)?

Regardless of the results, he was a likeable guy, so I'm sure he'll be just fine.

I would guess a year off or back to Duke in some capacity. I don’t know if he’d go to a Utah State or something if Smith leaves to try to rebuild his brand a bit.

Dawkins and Amaker got mid major jobs pretty quick after failing at a high level.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the same.

Hard to see how any big time program could sell him to the fanbase. I would bet mid major HC is the next step. It wouldn't hurt for him to take some time to learn some X's and O's from as an assistant at a good program, though. I doubt he'd take the demotion, but it might serve him well.

He got a hefty pay day.  He can afford to be selective (either this Spring or next Spring).  I personally, wanting him to succeed, would hope he sits this year out, reflects and waits for a great opportunity.  I think the worst thing he can do is do what Richard Pitino did and take a quick job with New Mexico, a region he has zero ties and conference he has zero connections with.

I think a job in the A10 would be a nice fit.  Anthony Grant (Alabama) and Travis Ford (OK State) are two fired coaches that have done very well there.

The George Mason job just opened up - and I agree, that conference could be a good fit.  Not to mention that he's from the region, seemed to have decent recruiting ties in the Philly/NY area, as well as a history in NC, which would work well recruiting to Northern VA.

Wojo has needed to reset his clock for the past ~2 seasons, and that's what he should do now.

Had he done so 1-2 years ago, he could have landed somewhere better, now I think he should buy a boat and take a few years off, let the stink of failure wear off.

If fans thought he was bad on the sideline, just wait for their takes of him on camera!

I highly, highly doubt he has any career in media. Ever. That's not exactly his forte.

Right—Wojo is not going back as an assistant at Duke. That’s absurd.

Why not? Capel did and he landed in the ACC after.

I don’t think it’s a smart move for professional growth but I do think it’s a possibility.

IONA after M.U. hires Pitino.
I warched Pitino "coach" Iona against Niagara and all he did was pace the sideline, talk to the refs, and let his players play.  He who coaches least coaches best,  BUT, you need the players.

Yeah and Capel had other experiences besides Duke. Wojo's kryptonite was he never had failure in his professional career other than MU. Wojo would be good to jump back in the saddle as a head coach or travel for a year visiting other coaches around the country. His Duke dogma turned into his Achilles heal.

As an aside, posters are pointing out early failures as non-starters for a coach candidate such as Moser. I would say that is a necessary experience including how they dug themselves out.

IMO his Achilles can heal.

Very good point, though.

Hindsight 20/20 but I'd say it's preferable to hire someone with clear examples of significant failure & to judge their response to it, as opposed to hiring someone that has had it pretty darned good for a long while. "But he's a winner" is great, but not sure how you could attribute that to 1 assistant coach or 1 player on a team. You figure the team is going to look to hire someone with that underdog mentality.

Wojo's career isn't over by a longshot & it will be defined by how well he eats his humble pie.

A few days ago you reiterated that there that Wojo would not be fired. So, if you have belief that Wojo lands back on the bench in Durham....you can spin that how you see fit.

I see two options...

Go to a lower level program where he can grow as a coach.  I think he should to go somewhere where he can develop a system and focus on teaching and strategy, it feels like he took shortcuts and never established an identity.

The other option would be NBA assistant.  I actually think his skill set right now works better with basketball concepts, and the type of player management NBA coaches deal with.

FWIW, Capel was never an assistant at Duke early on.  He assisted his Dad at ODU and then briefly was an assistant at VCU before he got the job.  He went “back” to Duke after flaming out at OU, but only cause he played there.  He wasn’t part of the Coach K diseased coaching tree up until that point.  Not like Wojo or Dawkins.

I never said he would be back at Duke.  I just don't see why that is out of the realm of possibilities. I actually think him sitting deep on an NBA bench before landing at a mid major makes some sense.
