Grambling grumbling
« on: December 17, 2019, 08:58:11 PM »
1.  10 days of rust.
2.  15 minutes of wheel spinning.
3.   And then everything else was fairly predictable.
4.  I don't think anybody is getting anointed after this Grambling game.
5.  Silly technical on Akanno.
6.  Grambling will do very well in the SWAC.
7.  3 pt shooting top 10 in the country.   All is not lost, apparently.
8.  Not Jayce's night.  It will still be ok.
9.  I love seeing 10 deep and interchangeable.  Hope it lasts.  Gives Marquette an edge.  Exploit it.  There will be nights when it may only be 7-8.  But some nights all 10 will be needed.
10.  Never really in doubt.

Double big lineup with Jamal could eat up on the boards, especially if the bigs are Ed and Jayce.

I like the idea of throwing Ed at the line and try the jump shot real quick. Looked good if he could make one.

Also couldn’t cover. MU sucks ;)

11.  27 Assists on 29 made FG’s.  Great ball movement.
12.  Four guys with 4 or more assists
13.  Morrow with some signs of life in the 2nd half
14.  TO’s were improved tonight

Great scheduling this game after 10 days off.

The ball movement was great. Best was just after the great Morrow block, when Elliott brought it up, passed it around the horn, got it back and hit the three.

I also agree that Grambling will do well in the SWAC. Very quick.

1. I think I’ve read this after every single Xmas break lay-off. You could have put this on your Grumblings 9 days ago.
4. Not worth mentioning. Red shirt is into the non con game. Shouldn’t have been a T. I know, I know....he’s a cheerleader...shouldn’t be clapping his hands in the opponents face.  Wojo, like you, will be all over it and make sure that this nonsense doesn’t continue!

Thought Koby let the game come to him a little better tonight

Sacar’s improvement/development is a credit to,him and the staff......

Our bigs just can’t stop fouling.....grrr

SY just makes the simple and smart play over and over again......

The sequence where the ball swung around to Greg for the corner 3 after about 5 passes was just a thing of beauty.

Just a little.

He made two baskets tonight, both layups.  Koby cannot hit anything from the outside at all.
Last seven games:
10 for 50 field goals (20%)
5 for 30 three pointers (16%)

Koby did have 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 turnovers, and appeared to be emotionally better, but just hoping the outside shots start dropping by BE play.

Yes, Jayce Johnson played like six minutes and fouled out.

Best offensively efficient game of the season.

Defense played really well until garbage time.

Nice 30-7 run at end and start of the halves.

High-low looked good.

Love the 3pt game.

Koby can’t hit that 3 lately. He gets an open look and I feel like maybe he should dribble in a bit and try to hit the floater a-la MarKus last year.

I would be selling Mane on how MU has one of the best shooting coaches in the country, and he can play in an offense where he can show off his shooting development.

I love Sy on offense. I hate Sy on defense. He got caught flatfooted a lot tonight. But I'm willing to live with some poor D occasionally if he can get us out of those offensive slumps we've seen once or twice every game.

That Morrow block and that Morrow dunk were two great examples of physical dominance. If he could harness that into something organized and he could be a really good player.

Koby looked a lot better tonight despite clanking all of his threes. 10 points, 5 boards, 7 assists, you take that most nights even with 4 TOs. If he finds his shot again (shot 42% as a FR), we will be a very deadly team.

Liked the limited high low action with the two bigs. Don't know that there is enough fouls in the world to allowed that to happen on a regular basis.

Jamal continues to impress. If the last three games are his new normal I see good things in his future.

Sacar: 5/7 from 3, 1/4 from 2. If you had told me his freshman/sophomore years that he would be a sharpshooter who struggles to score at the rime I would have laughed in your face. I'm afraid that our three point shooting attack is not sustainable. Need him and Koby to attack the rim and finish to keep opponents from playing up on our shooters.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Would love to see 9-10 guys contributing most every night. Depth could be a real difference-maker this season, especially at the end of close games.

My takeaway: Symir needs to continue to get more run. The offense just operates more smoothly with him running the point. Always seems under control while moving the ball to the open man quickly.

Sacar made a 3 in the defenders face in front of the Marquette bench.  Akanno was standing and clapping and said something to the defender, who did not appreciate it.  Double tech.  Galvanized Grambling.

Agree with this.  I thought the huddle that they showed when Wojo said something to the effect of "the help defense is great, but we have to take pride in our on ball defense, get right up in their chest" was aimed ay Symir, as he had just been blown past by a driver.

His passes and handle have been excellent.  His shot is a little wonkier than I thought after seeing him the first few times.  It kind of looks like a semi-set shot?  Like he doesn't jump much at all?

It was well deserved.  Especially when you are up 30.

Pluses: Shooting, ball movement, passing, stretches of really good defense, contributions from all 10.

Minuses:. Rebounding, fouls on bigs, Grambling able to beat defenders off the dribble, Morrow's backboard rattling jumper, sluggish start.

Just a little note on minutes.  Symir played more than either Greg or Brendan.  Jamal was 4th overall trailing only starters Sacar, Markus, and Koby.  Gotta like what those two kids are contributing.

Jayce was low minute man with 10, followed by Morrow with 12.  I am sure it will fluctuate game by game, but I love playing 10 and being able to mix and match.    This can really pay off as the season goes on.

Symir has been impressive in the last three games, where his minutes have averaged about 16 minutes a game.  Considering he should be a senior in high school, his shooting should improve and maybe will be the point guard next year. His passing skills are very effective and is his strongest attribute.

In the last three games, he has 12 assists and zero turnovers.

Double tech.  Galvanized Grambling.

And gave the referees license to call EVERYTHING after that.

I just don't understand why refs can't deal with a little bit of jawing, separate the guys, and play on. Instead there's replay review, discussion, and a double T that serves no real purpose.

9% usage for Symir over these past 3 games.

It's fine, this year affords him to do that.

Wonder what it is in a year.. 16-17%?

The whole team seems to be emphasizing crisp perimeter passing to find the best shot, most likely in one of the corners. There were several possessions where three or four quick passes led to an open three.

Symir will be counted on heavily next year.  That is why the redshirt never made sense.  This year he gets his feet wet and realizes the physicailty and speed of the game and adjusts over the next 12 months.  This year will prepare him by leaps and bounds for next year.

If you were listening to Wojo during the time outs, he did not want crisp perimeter passing.    He wanted them to get the ball to the foul line, get the ball to the post, cut, force the help, and either attack the basket or pass opposite.       The net result last night was 16-33 3 pt shooting.    Yay.    From a teaching and coaching stand point, getting the ball to Cain or Bailey at the foul line is the first step to beating the zone against a good team.

Agree—when BB gets the ball at the high post...he needs to get to the low post quickly or shoot that 15’. Both times he put the ball on the floor from there he lost it.

The way this roster is shaping up, I wonder if the best answer against the 2-3 zone is to have McEwen be the player flashing to the foul line.     Right now, he is struggling from 3.    Sacar, Markus, Elliott, Cain, Bailey are not.     So, set up the three shooters around the 3 point line and work the ball to McEwen at the foul line.    There, he either pops the short J, attacks the rim, bounce passes to the low post, or pitches opposite when the collapse help comes.     He has size, he has strength, and he is used to making decisions in traffic.

Better than Sacar because he is a better passer and Sacar is not finishing at the rim.

Better than Cain/Bailey, as neither is experienced having the offense run through them.

Sub in GE for Koby and have him flash to the foul line.    Same rationale.

If we aren't going to play Cain and Bailey together, at this stage, Cain seems to be the better option.

The zone offense strategy is interesting as we are having Jamal or Brendan start the possession at FT Line, and then come out and ball screen the ball side guard at top of zone above 3 point arc, only to then retreat back to the FT line.

Think both Jamal and Brendan would best be served to immediately launch from there, or dump ball down low, or kick out immediately.  Decisive action is critical once receiving the ball there.

I like it, would also say Symir flashing might be nice too. Have him find the open shooter upon collapse

Makes sense in theory. Only concern is his loose handle. That is a prime spot for turnovers and Koby is the worst offender in that regard

Symir hasn't shown the ability to attack the rack yet.  So the defense wouldn't need to react to him as decisively as they would against Koby.

And no player on this roster is perfect there, a la Lazar, JFB, Jae, Wes.   In a perfect world you want somebody who can shoot from the foul line area, can put the ball on the floor and get to the rack, and who can pass.   Agree that Koby is loose with the ball.  Just brainstorming.

Sam was great in the free throw line spot against the zone. Great shooter.....good passer and decision maker....and didn’t turn it over.

Oh well
