Title: 2016 NBA Mock Draft: Marquette's Henry Ellenson rises into Top 10
Post by: radome on April 18, 2016, 02:36:54 PM
From: http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25558775/nba-mock-draft-raptors-steal-marquettes-henry-ellenson

9. Toronto Raptors
Henry Ellenson, PF-C, Marquette: The Raptors could use a power forward prospect to develop, and Ellenson fits well within their offensive scheme. He stretches the floor, has great basketball sense, and would eventually fit with either Jonas Valanciunas post play inside, Bebe Nogueira's length and shot-blocking ability outside, or any of the wings. He's simply a versatile player offensively who struggles a bit defensively, and I'd think the Raptors have enough around him to make it work.

Must be, if he's being drafted by a Canadian team.

Big East with two top 10 draft picks. Would be a nice brag for the conference.

So Diamond Stone might fall into the second round?  It's a guard/shooter's league!

18. DIAMOND STONE: C, MARYLAND, 6-11, 255, 19 YEARS OLD

Scouting Profile: Just a few years ago, it would seem likely that Diamond Stone would be a top-10 pick in this draft. He's a big-bodied center with a long wingspan and terrific touch around the rim who can create his own offense from the block. That's not the way the NBA is going though, and his game has some major holes in the way it fits in the current iteration of the league. The two biggest problems are that he can't defend on the perimeter and he can't rebound inside. Plus, his conditioning needs to improve moving forward. In the modern NBA, I wouldn't pick Stone in the first round because of these weaknesses. But some team likely will and try to develop him inside as a weapon.

Hiring Agent? Yes
Draft range: No. 12 to No. 40

Did Diamond officially hire an agent/declare for this draft?

Ha--thinking the same thing.....rises? I admit I don't follow this that closely, but HE has been 5-14 all year in the projections that I have seen......glad he's moved into the top ten!!! Finally!

Projected top 10 since day 1.

Being a bit of a punk doesn't help his case either. Big stretch to take him in round 1 imo. Too much baggage and not enough upside.

A punk?  Outside of the UW push what is there to indicate that?

Beat me to it.

And, if Stone measure 6'11" - which I don't think will happen - I predict he goes higher than #18.

I take the approach of looking at the most conservative poll on Henry and he is 19th in this one, pretty much where he has been all year. Interesting to note that Stone is now 27th in this one, so they have him almost out of the first round.

I am hoping that Henry goes number 5 to the TimberWolves. I think that would be an excellent situation. Close to home in familiar surroundings makes the transition to NBA life a little bit easier.

So using your logic (look at the worst draft position in mocks for each player) there will be no #1 overall pick this year.

It is a just a conservative approach that I like to take. I think Henry will likely go higher and I want him to go higher, but I like to look at the worst case scenario.

I think for Stone the trend is going the wrong way. Players like Deyonta Davis are much more attractive prospects.

Another example Simmons is now rated 2 in Draft Express. Still likely he goes one, but not a slam dunk as ESPN has been touting.

Henry was the consensus 9th pick in the draft before he verbaled to MU.

CBS asserting he is rising is just false headlines.

And Marq / NY, you're not taking the conservative approach you're just citing the least respected site.

He's been against Henry all year. Remember in November he stated that in no way would henry be a one and done.

What happens to the conservative approach when Kostas is up for discussion?

Well the conservative approach there would be to say he is raw and a project, which I pretty much accept as the downside. However, his Size and Length and athleticism can't be taught.  I still think he has a high ceiling that is worth pursuing.  Therefore I put him as a Low risk , High Return prospect.  If You look at the Johnnies message boards they are pretty excited about him, but then again they have 3 open spots.

If I were a St. John's fan, I'd be excited about the sun rising.

I think the Johnnies are going to surprise a few people this year. They are a fun team to watch.

Here are some of the prospects they are watching.

Interesting use of the word "fun". The Fighting St. Jean's run zero sets, toss the ball every which way out of the gym, and were nearly the worst shooting team in the entire nation.

They are interested in Kostas, therefore they are declared to be "fun."

Hope this helps.

It is fun in the sense when a team that lousy can get its act together and beat a final four team like they did this year with Syracuse. Kind of like the old New York Mets.

The old Mets of 1969 were fun.

The old Mets of 1962 were fun in a very different kind of way.

Bang! I nailed that analysis about a week ago in a Who Should Draft Henry thread when I said:

"As for Henry he'll need a place to develop. Toronto or Orlando wouldn't be bad landing spots for him where he wouldn't have to be a bruiser down low with Jonas Valančiūnas and Nikola Vučević patrolling the paint, respectively. HE needs to put muscle on his frame so he won't get pushed around in the league, don't get me wrong he had a phenomenal year at Marquette but there were times where he got pushed around by smaller guys and didn't hesitate to whine to the refs. All in all I hope he has a 13+ year NBA career but there most certainly will be a learning curve and I hope he lands in a place with people that can help him grow into a legit NBA player."

lol. Get its act together = beating a team that lost 14 games this year. In order to do so, St. John's had to 59% eFG thanks to 50% 3-point shooting (12 made!!) and the 14 loss team had to shoot only 39.5% eFG - their second worst of the year - thanks to 5/26 for 19.2% 3FG.

Syracuse was a +9 on turnovers, but it wasn't enough because of 3-point shooting. The equalizer of bball when it comes to bad teams vs. much better teams.

Like Herm Edwards says "that is why they play the games"
