"We're using campus costs, and plugging that into the NCAA formula,"  UW Associate Athletic Director Vince Sweeney told 27 News.

The NCAA formula is available to member schools for calculating housing and food costs, but not required.

Sweeney told 27 News he was unaware some football players used housing or food stipends to purchase mopeds and cars.

But Sweeney said the decision on using the funds was up to student-athletes.

"Our obligation to them is to issue them a check,"   Sweeney said.   "How they manage that is their business."

I too wonder how the governance should work in this case, but this kinda shakes a finger in the face of those people who believe student-athletes should get paid: they have their ways to get their monies.

I'm trying to figure out the problem here.  Since they used the NCAA formula, they followed all the guidelines they should have.

This wouldn't be a problem if they were shopping at Whole Foods and living in a $1000 a month apartment, so why is it a big deal if they don't do these things and buy a moped? Splitting an apartment with a roommate to save money is smart. I actually see no problem with this. The drunken driving problem is another issue...
