So Man in the High Castle gets better? I watched the first two episodes and felt pretty let down (though the expectations I had for it probably was a big culprit of my disappointment).  I always have a bit of a struggle when it comes to how much of a new show I need to watch to give it a real chance.  Most shows don't hit their stride until a couple episodes in, and some take more than a whole season. But that's a big investment to make, too.

On that note, it might not qualify as 2016, but I'm super excited for the third season of The Leftovers. Thought the second season was one of the more ambitious things I've watched, and I absolutely loved it.

Man in the High Castle is billed as Science Fiction... is that simply because its alternate reality or does the Sci-Fi become apparent as you watch it?  Because I can't - for the life of me - figure out why something set in the 60's would qualify as Sci-Fi.

Please don't tell me that the main premise is technology developed faster with the Nazis and Japanese Empire in charge.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Part of it stems from the fact that the author (Phillip K Dick) plays heavily in that genre.  He also wrote Blade Runner, Total Recall & Minority Report - among other pieces.

If you watch the whole season I think also will see why it does have some connection to sci-fi

I'm surprised so many people liked Man in the High Castle so much. I was not a big fan at all. My wife loved it though, so I'm sure I'll end up watching season 2.

Lot's of what other folks said but I will Luke Cage, Daredevil Season 2 was pretty solid.  Movies, Manchester by the Sea was pretty friggin' phenomenal.

While it's only one episode, for those with little kiddo's, the animated Snowy Day on Amazon is nice watch.

I only got half-way Season 2 Daredevil.  Hope to get through the rest over Christmas break.

I guess the standards for science fiction in the 60s are much different than they are today.  Back then, jerking it to internet porn would have been considered science fiction.  Today, a story about the tri-mammary hooker in Total Recall would likely air on Lifetime rather than Sy-Fy.

That said, I just watched the first 20 mins. of S1Ep1 over lunch, and it's pretty obvious how this will easily qualify as sci-fi - even by 2016-standards - at some point.

I thought Sci-Fi was invented in like 1964 or '65

I liked DareDevil and Jessica Jones, but dumped Luke Cage after a couple episodes.

Luther has been on for as couple years. Good show, though.

Night Manager may have been the best I saw all year.

binge-watched "sons of anarchy"  had to put it down with 7 episodes remaining.  opie's * "bad incident"* was pretty heavy, but when *gemma and tara got into it*...need a breather

*note-didn't want to give away anything for those who haven't yet seen it

On Netflix...
.
  • House of Cards & Orange is the New Black: Watched both, but not as good as they once were. Think OITNB is probably on an irreversible downhill slide (like Jenji Kohan's Weeds was), but HoC could still rebound. An election story could be interesting, but after this last cycle, might be overkill.
  • Daredevil & Luke Cage: Both were excellent, but a bit too long. Entertaining shows, but could have been done in 8 episodes.
  • Stranger Things: The highlight of the year on Netflix. Just an absolute wonderland for people who loved sci-fi in the 1980s.
.
In Theaters...
.
  • Deadpool: Hell of a lot of fun, though far more of a stock comic movie (albeit with swearing and adult themes) than anyone was willing to recognize.
  • Doctor Strange: Fantastic. Just a brilliant new twist on the Marvel movie genre. Inventive, special effects were like Fantasia brought to life.
  • Sully: Really good movie. Hanks always picks the best roles.
  • Captain America - Civil War: It certainly wasn't the comic story, and didn't really resemble it, but it introduced an intriguing villain in Zemo, expanded the brand to fantastic new characters in Black Panther and Spider-Man, and carried on the Marvel tradition of great movies.
  • Batman v Superman & Suicide Squad: Terrible. Both of them. Bad plots, poor and unexplained character development, I just don't get what DC is trying to do.
.
On TV...
.
  • What We Do In The Shadows: Okay, it's a movie, but I saw it on HBO. It's BRILLIANT!!! Absolutely hilarious. Designed as a documentary on vampires in New Zealand. Laugh out loud funny, one of the best movies I've seen in ages. Could watch it again and again.
  • Westworld: HBO, interesting, thought-provoking, creepy, very entertaining and worth the watch.
  • iZombie: Didn't premiere this year, but good show, though the first season was the highlight thus far. Someone else mentioned it and I second the nomination.
  • Leah Remini Scientology: Documentary on A&E, gives a better look of just how psychotic that "religion" is. If you haven't started on it, check it out on demand.
  • The Americans: Been going for a few years, but if you haven't checked it out, I recommend it. Spy thriller that focuses on two KGB agents that are American infiltrators in the 1980s. Does a great job of mixing their spy life with their work life with their family and friend lives.
  • Full Frontal with Samantha Bee: The Daily Show really erred when they went to Trevor Noah instead of Samantha Bee. She's a far better host, more entertaining, and more willing to be critical of the party she supports. Wish this was nightly instead of weekly, though it'd probably put TDS out of business.

interesting show, leah is good.  scientology is one messed up "cult".  if they think they are so legit, come on out from the dark and tell us all your wonderful stories about "helping people".  hopefully leah has some help watching her backside.  i don't think the elroy hubbards play very nice.  greta van susteren has been a member as well as quite a few other doozies.

I like Sam Bee, but they really missed out with John Oliver.  After he subbed for Stewart, Stewart wasn't as funny in comparison, and was no better than the pundits he criticized.

John Oliver is hilarious, and in my opinion, much more intelligent than Stewart (Who was very funny in his own right)

I just saw that FX has ordered a Mayans spinoff from SOA creator Kurt Sutter.  I'm pretty excited about that.

Binged Shameless this summer and did my yearly rewatch of West Wing this fall to counteract the election coverage.

I've caught about 10 minutes of every episode.  What I did watch was very compelling.
rocketsurgeon - If I can find it, I'll copy it.  Rolling Stone published a statement from Scientology on the show and it's venomous and does make you think she should watch her backside.

Found:
http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/5-things-we-learned-from-scientology-the-aftermath-ep-3-w455929

A spokesperson from the Church of Scientology was contacted about this article and responded with the statement below:
"Leah Remini is doing this for the money and now tries to pretend otherwise. Ms. Remini is being compensated for this show, just as she profited from her book. In addition, she attempted to extort the Church by first demanding $500,000, followed by an additional $1 million, because the Church invoked its First Amendment right to respond to her false claims with the truth. This shows the extent Leah Remini is willing to go to in order to distort the truth about Scientology."

Oliver's problem is that he doesn't talk to people, he talks at them. He's too preachy, and his weekly rants are all basically the same thing. Once you've seen one Oliver rant, you've seen them all. He did okay filling in for Stewart, but couldn't hold a candle to him long term.
