I hope JC starts and earns another SOTG. We need him to be s regular part of the offensive flow and need him to play well to get the most out of Markus.

Not only did Cain get fouled but Enoch stood in the middle of the lane the entire possession!!!

Sacar hurts us
Hard to win with sacar out there just nit very good

Why did Morrow keep backing up on that defensive possession?  Gave a wide open layup

Jeez i really hope we aren’t just not very good.

Offense is terrible again. Missing bunnies.

Our offense is 3 or post up, that's about all we got in Wojos playbook

Post by: forgetful on November 23, 2018, 06:30:22 PM
We just can't beat anyone off the dribble.  Every team we play can just face guard their guy and we can't beat them off the dribble.

Stupid DVR rewind function.  I was totally fine believing MU was cheated by a missed travel call.  He only took two steps and shot a wrong footed shot from 9 feet away.

I actually think our D hasn't been terrible so far. Enoch is just bigger and better but overall I'm happy at this point.

Unbelivable defensive rebounding
Just soft n pathetic!!
Great defense for 30 seconds and then fumbling the rebound to the other team 6 times is terrible defense.

Markus forced one shot.   Meh.    Defensive rebounding is the issue right now.    Defense was solid until the shot went up.

I’m trying not to overreact, but for all the bad basketball I’ve watched this team play so far this year. That might have been the worst half. It bears repeating, this is not a well coached team right now.

I have to imagine wojos practices are primarily skill based.  Team shows zero toughness.  Louisville just taking the ball away from us like we are little bitches.

Big difference between crapting yourself in the second half against the #2 team in the country vs. coming out unprepared against a bottom level acc team. Most everyone on this board was expecting the second half collapse against Kansas.

Lesson for this season so far

We aren’t good until we beat someone good. We all jumped the gun thinking MU is good until they proved it on the court.

We can still win today and prove it. FINISH TEAM!

I'm not impressed by Louisville so far. If MU can't win this,  the off season optimism will be officially comically wrong

Defensive rebounding could be improved.

Also, be nice if someone else noticed that #0 travelled every time he has the ball
Title: Re: Loserville game thread
Post by: forgetful on November 23, 2018, 07:26:14 PM
Louisville getting away with a lot of cheap shots.  Pushed Howard in the back, just put a forearm to Hauser's chest when he set a pick.  Lots of grabs and holds too, with no calls.

But what is deciding this game is simple.  Louisville has 10 offensive rebounds.  We are holding them on their first shot, but not getting the rebounds.

Good grief Markus, make the layup.  That’s like the teams fourth/fifth missed bunny.  Amazing.

UL on offensive boards, yikes.

Well, guess the three point barrage will start soon.  They drop, MU has chance, if not  Loserville.

Disagree, that one was poor shot selection IMO

It aint a beauty contest and all wins are good wins.  We battled and made a ton of horrible plays and made some good ones too.  I will take it.  Only truly serious head scratcher was the pounding of the ball to Theo in the first half.  He has bad moves, zero touch, and cannot shoot FTs.  He is one of our worst offensive options so wtf is the thought process from the coaching staff??  I understand pick n rolls to theo n ed like in the second half but the post feeds are a bad option.  Theo has demonstrated that at every option n doesnt kick it out.
We won the game and boy what a relief but part of the reason we trailed was the early n often post feeds to Theo that didnt work.

No where near it this year and is a turnover machine this year.  Right now about a 4 dog fight fir minutes on the wing n he was by far the worst of them in NYC.
He will continue to get his chances needs to make better use if them or someone else will.

Giving up on sophomores 6 games into the season is dumb.   Last year, all he had to do was catch and shoot open 3's after the defense collapsed on Markus/Andrew/Sam.    This year, because the team is so thin at guard, he is handling the ball more and trying to do more.    It takes time.    Just like it is taking time with Morrow, Chartouny, Bailey to fit into their roles.   For one night, Morrow figured it out.    I have little doubt that Jamal will have his big games this year.

Who said Wojo is giving up on him?? Or are you referring to me?? I am not either.  As far as Wojo he us starting him and subbed him in 4-5 times during the game.  But if each time u come in u dont look ready to play and dont help ur team any coach is gonna make a change.  His play the first 25 minutes clearly didnt give WoJo the feling tgat he was the guy to go with down the stretch of a tight game.  Bailey played decent.  Sacar played decent on the defensive side n went with them.  Im sure wijo hasnt given up on him after 6 games.  Him not getting in at the end sure shouldnt indicate this of a starter.  I know i havent either, i have been impressed with his defense but needs to get better n develop more of a repetoire offensively. He needs to be able to handle the ball at the 3.  He stunk tonite n didnt get minutes at the end.  Nithing more nothing less. Tomorow is a new day

The problem with Theo in the post is that if he gets the ball down there he is going to get off a shot come hell or high water.  He needs to pass back out when he doesn't have something rather than force it.  He makes some good moves and is getting better.

Theo is a solid offensive player and if the opponent chooses to not double team him, I am fine with him putting up the baby hook.  He will get better with that and when he does, he will draw a double team and he has proven to be a good passer in the past.  But he has to learn to finish.

Because Sam and Markus bring so much to the table (and have such a higher usage rate) that you live with their mistakes. Jamal, not so.much.

Because he wanted shooters in the game for the offensive possession and didn't want to burn the final timeout to make the substitution. I imagine he wanted to save the timeout in case the offensive possession went awry.

MU trailed by 1 when he made that sub. It was a ridiculous decision.

UL had just missed the front end. Absolutely no need to make that sub when, if UL makes the second the FT, they're down 2.

If he makes both, and you're gonna go for three and the tie, then I can see it.

It wasn't a ridiculous decision. We're down two (or one if the FT is missed). The play call is for markus to get to the hoop. If Theo is in the game, his defender clogs up the paint. But putting Bailey in the corner it ensured that there would be far more spacing and less traffic in the lane.

Now, I do think he should have called timeout directly after the made basket to get Theo back into the game defensively.

Somebody didn't watch the second half or OT. Thought it was one of Marcus' best games. made the adjustments, started hitting the open man, didn't force much, only one to, and perfect at the line. He was being belted by some real tough cookies tonight and he didn't back down one bit.

This is spot on. He needs to get better at reading the defender and kicking it back out if necessary. But he does have some good moves that I think will make him a real offensive threat in the next year or two.

The gameplan tonight was decidedly different than others this year, looking inside a lot more. Theo handled it OK. If he would have looked to pass just a couple more times, I would say that it would have been a great plan. We went from having no presence in the post in recent games to throwing it down low too much to start this game. The balance will come, but I'm hoping it comes sooner than later.

No doubt that such coaching inspires confidence in a player and to run through a wall for his coach.  Meanwhile, as a player I watch Markus Howard throw the ball all over the court and force shot after shot with no consequence.

Sure would be nice if Wojo would learn to let his talented youngsters play through some mistakes, just as his most loyal here have given him 4+ years of grace for mediocre (at best) coaching.

Cain plays hard and busts his ass out there - this is not a case of JJJ where you could at least make a case for not seeing the hustle.

We don't want our players to play soft, but those not named Markus/Sam get coached into that by virtue of getting benched when making an aggressive play but turning it over.

Yep.  There it is.  Just as its been Wojo's coaching style since Year 1 - to overreact and squash a kid's confidence.  Guy still hasn't learned.  And some of you wonder why we've yet to win an NCAA game under Wojo - or be a Top 25 team?

You do realize our standard for celebrating is now a 3rd place finish in the Pre-season NIT, because we eeked out an OT win against the projected 11th place team in the ACC that entered the season ranked 63rd?

Hang the banner.

Against Louisville, Cain had 2 TOs in 9 minutes, both moronic plays.  He had zero assists.  Zero offense, and was getting manhandled on the boards.

Howard was the focus of their entire defensive strategy.  In 44 minutes, handling the ball substantially more, he had 1 TO.  He had 5 assists.  He had an eFG% of 50%. He also added 2 steals on defense.

Cain was bad yesterday.  By any objective viewer he should have been pulled.

I'm really really really glad that you are not the coach.

It's not a moronic play to attack the basket and force help.  He made an aggressive basketball play.  You need guys attacking the paint.  Jamal's problem is he's not yet great at doing so going to his left/off hand.

That's a simple fix:  Pull him to the side - I want you to stay aggressive.  Make that same move, but bring it to a jump stop in middle of lane.  Assess -  Shoot?  Shot Fake/then shoot?  Kick out to open shooter on wing?

Do you know how many times Cain has been instructed in just that exact way?  Particularly on shot fakes, and jab steps.  The problem is Cain can't execute it right now, and he was a liability in this game.  If he stays out there, we would have lost.

Cain actually understands he's a bit spastic on offense and even jokes about it.

How many times has Cain been instructed this way?  You at practice?

And for a guy who said he played:  Are you f'in kidding me?  You couldn't execute a jump stop and shot fake?

EVERY player at the high major level has the ability to execute a jump stop.  So, the fact that we don't see Cain doing it, suggests to me, it is not being drilled into his game.

I can't give you numbers.  But based on his social media feed, and other sources, it is quite clear.

Now the ironic part.  Your other statements reek of coming from a person with no knowledge of actually playing the game of basketball, or no experience working at a high level in any field.

Every player has the ability to execute a jump stop, and knows the fundamentals, but having the ability and know how is different than actually executing it.  Especially when one goes from low levels of competition, or low levels of difficulty and suddenly has a major jump in both difficulty and expectations.

Cain knows how and what to do, but is in over his head right now in terms of pace of play and quality of play.  That means he presses too much, gets nervous, and forgets to execute.  It is a common malady of all people when they make major changes to higher levels.

Think going from being a college QB to the NFL.  All QB's know how to execute the throws and how to go through progressions, but doing that at the pace and difficulty of the NFL is infinitely different than college.  If you force them into it too much, they can get gun-shy and never recover.  Sometimes it is better to sit a person down, to coach them back up, instead of leaving them with their feet against the fire...too often you end up burned for life.

Really not that complicated, and anyone that has done anything at progressively higher levels of competition would know this.

Then why doesn't Wojo take Markus out for poor defense?

Because 1) his defense has improved and 2) he is too important to the offense

It's not a moronic play to attack the basket and force help.  He made an aggressive basketball play.  You need guys attacking the paint.  Jamal's problem is he's not yet great at doing so going to his left/off hand.

That's a simple fix:  Pull him to the side - I want you to stay aggressive.  Make that same move, but bring it to a jump stop in middle of lane.  Assess -  Shoot?  Shot Fake/then shoot?  Kick out to open shooter on wing?

Lol. Re-watch the game. He didn't "make an aggressive basketball play". Hauser flashed to the wide post and Cain had him open for a full second and didn't throw the pass. Then, after he was covered, Cain threw a terrible pass right to the defender for a turnover. Cain barely moved 3 inches on the play.

If you take Markus out for poor defense, you put Chartouny in at the point.

Let's take it easy on Cain. His defense and rebounding have greatly improved from last season. He did a number on Vick in the Kansas game.  There's a reason he's starting. His offense seems to still be limited to catch and shoot thees. Last night Louisvilles entire strategy was to crowd the three point line. Our defense was clicking and Louisville was taking away Cain's only weapon on the offensive side. Sitting him was the right move IMHO.

I have no doubt that Cain will get plenty of run in the next game because the staff has faith in him.

If we had Greg, I would have taken Markus out ( not bench him) during the first half of the UL game as he was clearly not contributing offensively and he is just too small to be an effective defender.

Agreed.   Cain will have big minutes and big games coming up.

Just to be clear.  I think Cain is an asset to this team, and like his progress and upside.  I also think the staff has faith in him, and part of that is putting him into positions where he can build confidence and succeed.

Thanks.  I appreciate that you can acknowledge your original point was ridiculous.  Of course Cain can execute a jump stop and shot fake.

While I appreciate your effort to suggest he's unable to do so because of the pace of play, and trying to make an analogy between a college QB going to the NFL - making a jump stop and putting up a shot fake have absolutely zero to do with pace of play.

Since I don't follow our players on social media, could you kindly link a few of Cain's posts where he laughs about being spastic on offense?

This all said, I don't doubt Cain feels spastic playing under a coach like Wojo.
To the bolded point - you press as a player far more when you know you are on a short leash, and one or two "mistakes" lands you on the bench.  Getting nailed to the bench for 19:30 does NOTHING to benefit your confidence as a player.

So if you recognize that taking Markus out wouldn't make sense, why are  asking that question?

Scar and Jamal look very different this year than last year. They took steps back. Morrow is not who he was at Nebraska. Joe C looks far more hesitant on offense now than last season.

Could be 4 coincidences. Could be 4 guys affected by their coach.

Jamal is better than he was last season. Sacars defense is better but his offense has seemed to take a step back. But it also took him awhile last season to find his offense. Joe C has always been hesitant on offense. An article got posted here about his Fordham days begging for him to be more aggressive on offense.

Ed is legit though. Looks nothing like he was at Nebraska. Not convinced we've seen everything there is to see from him yet.

I am of the opinion that he is still getting back to 100% after his sports hernia surgery.

I was going to post the same thing.

The team had a lot of players dealing with rehab this off-season.   Morrow, both Hausers, Elliott and Eke, who are both hurt again.   A bit of a slow start does not surprise me.

The team should be rounding in to form about mid-January.

1. We are six games into a season.  Writing off any player's season at this point, especially transfers, is silly.

2. Even if a player regresses, how is that due to their confidence being "destroyed?"

There are PLENTY of things to say negatively about Wojo.  It's peddling stupid stuff and conspiracy theories that cause people like you and Ners to get called out.
