Voting is back open for the Marquette Alumni Team for The Basketball Tournament. Last year the Golden Eagles Alumni, led by Dwight Buycks and Joe Chapman, made it to the final eight before falling to Always A Brave. Let's vote the boys back in and hope they make it all the way this year!
https://www.thetournament.com/teams/golden-eagles-marquette-alumni
-
Why does the logo have a picture of a bald eagle instead of a golden eagle?
-
I think it's actually an African Fish Eagle.
-
This was great last year. Hopefully Vander comes out this year and we blow everyone out
-

How can you tell? It's an eagle with a white head.
-
Don't know if everyone is familiar with the That Basketball Tournament, the TBT. It was fun to watch last year, especially for fans like Scoopers. I have heard that this year the organizers were trying to make it even more "college team centric". I also think there is more money at stake this year. It makes the Summer doldrums more tolerable. So Vote.

Absolutely. It's fantastic. Chick and I are hoping that the first round is back in Chicago again this year. We would have gone but we were out of town on vacation. I think all the games could be streamed and I think I recall that beginning with the second weekend games were on TV somewhere. In some ways it reminded me of watching the guys in Italy a couple years back. Great summer fun.
-
I just voted and was poking around the website. Last year it was winning team take all to the tune of 1 million bucks. This year it is 2 million winner take all, I was hoping they would distribute the cash among the final 4, 8, or 16 teams. A friend of mine at work let me know about it last year and it was fun. MU hoops is a venue for me to hang out with my sons and the TBT allows for an extra MU hoops experience. The TBT was great from the standpoint that my guys said they always wanted to see so and so play with a guy from a different time period and that is some of what you get. I also think that this tournament was more successful than they thought so I think more TV coverage this year. Hopefully they will play in Chicago or Milwaukee I will definitely take the crew.

Will be at Bradley's campus per Matt's article

I'm not sure exactly when it started but I know that marquette had at least one game on one of the espns and maybe two.

Espn2

Curious to see if anyone else joins the squad this year. I think I saw that Carlino is now on DJOs team in Europe. Would love for him to come on board
-
Fitz needs to get players on board to make sure we're eligible. I know he will, but would love it if the MU team was the first eligible to compete.

The guys are getting old...

A strange goal to have since it means literally nothing beyond being eligible to play in the tournament.
-
Maybe Jimmy wants to play on a team with chemistry!
-
Hopefully we can get a big man this year or at least Lazar can come back. That 7fter from Bradley dominated us

Ah! Gotcha. ;)

Got my vote in. The more votes we get the better off we are.

I got my vote in. Time to recruit other voters.

That is correct, coconut capacity is key in identification.

That's stupid -- and overly complicated.
They should just treat all intentional fouls in crunch time like a technical -- let the fouled player shoot whatever shots he is entitled to and then let his team bring the ball back in.

I disagree, I think it's a great idea. I like the idea of teams actually playing basketball at the end instead of go-foul-me. The only downside is the lack of buzzer-beaters, but every game will end with a made basket, either from the field or from the line. I think that's a positive.

No buzzer beaters per se, but would be sudden death as in in the NFL. Would need an additional item on the scoreboard also to let everyone (including fans) see the target score. Sounds hokey to me.

It is like reverse baseball. Baseball has a target number of outs, this gives a target number of points.

Nah. The winning score would be like a buzzer beater for all intents and purposes and similar to sudden death. The number of outs is more in line with the clock.

This method rally makes a lot of sense when there is a blowout. So if XYZU is winning 99-56, the target score is still 106. Goofy. I suppose there could be parameters, but........
-
Interesting that as of right now, Overseas Elite (two time defending TBT champs) do not have a team registered for this year's edition.
-
This rule change is only for the play in games, if I'm understanding correctly. Interesting change but it won't affect the MU team.

I love it. Not complicated at all. Would immensely improve the final minutes of games.
I would make one adjustment. Games that are less than 7 points at first clock stoppage within 4 minutes (or 5 points, 3 points, whatever the point number is decided to be), you play out as normal. So you still have buzzer beaters in close games, but you don't have teams that are down by 10 hacking away hoping to close the gap for 2 minutes. If the lead is larger than that margin, you shut down the clock and go for the target score.

Who's on first, What's on..........
-
How about:
Under one minute (or 90 sec) to go every defensive foul in the backcourt is one shot plus the ball.
This encourages the defense to actually go for steals. More time runs off the clock as the ball is advanced across half court vs the fraction of a second after an inbounds play and immediate foul.
This would work well in college (though the NBA probably needs something else). Would speed things up a little without getting too gimmicky.
-
Are you guys on drugs? That would be the dumbest rule change I have ever heard in my life, even worse than the penalty box for soccer.
Basketball is a timed game, not a possession game. You are changing the fundamental rules of basketball by doing that and playing the 37 minutes of the game one way and changing the entire complexion of the game for the last 3 minutes. Its insanely stupid.
Heres a thought, make your free throws and put the game out of reach earlier.
-

Fouling has already changed the entire complexion of the game for the last 3 minutes. This seeks to alleviate that complexion change and keep it looking like basketball and not hacksketball.

Make your free throws. Or keep Dwight Howard and Deandre Jordan off the floor, real simple. If god forbid they decide to enact this mind numbingly stupid idea, keep it to the crap product that is the NBA. Dont touch the college game.

So it will look more like basketball if you need a calculator to figure out when the game is over?

Don't laugh. I am told that Prince was actually a pretty decent baller - especially given his height.

Not laughing at all! I'm saying I want EVERY game to end like that!
And then they'll all eat pancakes.

If someone needs a calculator to add 7 to a basketball score, I'd recommend retaking their first grade math class.

While I agree with you this shouldn't be (and won't be) implemented in college, it also won't be implemented in the NBA. And the NBA is a far better "product" than college. Even if you like college more than the NBA, and I consider myself in that group, it's pretty much impossible to argue that it's a better product than the NBA
The NBA is far cleaner, far better players, far better ratings.

Yes. Officials are much more lenient on travel calls in the NBA. But I know NBA refs are exponentially better than college refs. And NBA refs tend to let things go in the regular season.
Oh well. Not the time and place to get into an NBA vs. College debate. Support our alumni team!
-
Is that how it works?
I think a) we need enough votes to get in tournament and b) if I remember correctly the GM of some of the leading vote getters can put an additional player on roster

You need enough votes to be in the top-9 of your region to automatically qualify. 6 at-large teams will be added provided they have 100+ votes and 7 or more players. Then there will be 4 teams that get in (1 per region) through a play-in.
Last year, teams that went over 2,000 votes were able to add a "ringer", which is any player in the world. They would be added the second weekend, or the Super 16 round.
Each team is allowed 9 players provided they are on the roster by June 1, but can add more if they spend money after. $1,000 per player before the start of the tournament, and it escalates if they are added later.

Hmm any chance Wade is retiring this year and wants one last time in a Marquette uniform?

This rule has nothing to do with hitting free throws. it's so that we dont sit and watch 3 minutes of free throw practice in 20 minutes.
The rule has some interesting design to it, but I'm not sure if I want to see it either.

You mistake ref freedom in the regular season for unclean play. The nba is about entertainment, they bend the rules quite a bit to allow for that.
I hate the NBA game, but I don't lie to myself by saying the college game looks prettier.

I really hope they lean on Vander this year but my guess is he won't want to risk injury. How about Zar?

Does anyone else think it's a little sad that the guy in the article is a genius and he's devoted "most of his free time since 2004" to speeding up the last 2 minutes of basketball games?

Confirmed players so far:
Trent Lockett

Acker is on the team but you can add Marcus Jackson to that list. I see him every few weeks at the gym i go to and i walked up to him and said like yeah im a huge fan all then i was like are you playing with the alumni this upcoming summer? and he said there is a chance he is going to play

So apparently we go both go to the Beautiful People's Club and had a conversation with Marcus to convince him to play. What are the odds he changes gym's soon?
-
I just looked at the roster. We're gonna need some size (that big dude from Bradley killed us last year). Other than Gardner, the only other forwards are Blackledge and Anderson, who don't inspire much confidence. A three-guard lineup of Buycks, McNeal, and DJO is deadly, but without some forward/center presence, especially defensively, they won't be able to win it.
Sounds familiar...

He's probably simply happy that people still know who he is.

Avg 12 and 6 in the dleague is what the team needs? He's my all time favorite MU player but he's a far cry from the guy who single handily carried a team of midgets to the tournament.

No doubt Lazar was huge. Defending the 5 and rebounding at a high rate, go to scorer, senior leader. But don't minimize Jimmy and DJO. They had very good years as well. At the time, it was Lazar and a bunch of unknowns so it felt like he carried the team.
Now that we can look back on the careers of Jimmy and DJO, we should recognize they were huge components that season as well. They were underappreciated at the time but both had great seasons.

They were both huge, but that was absolutely Lazar's team. DJO could get hot but was really streaky. The kind of guy who could score 20 in the first and completely disappear in the second.
Jimmy was coming into his own, but at that point Lazar was better in every way. Offensively and defensively. I do think Jimmy learned a ton from Zar that year, and it served him well not just as a senior (when his defense became elite) but as a pro.
Long run, Jimmy became the better player, but in 2009-10, Lazar was our best player and I don't even think it was particularly close.

Burke is playing again this year

I agree with most of this. Lazar lead that team. But I wouldn't say he carried the team. Hopefully this doesn't evolve into a semantics debate.
I would say Lazar was the best player but Jimmy was not far behind.
-
What I remember from that year is that Lazar had huge plays and was always the focal point. Meanwhile butler was more of a silent solid player. There was one game that was relatively close that year and at the end of the game I looked up and butler put up 20 points. Completely silently.

Warriors play in Peoria on July 15th. Anybody in? I am contemplating taking my crew down to watch, I imagine this could be very fun. I think Burke is playing/lacing them up, no 7 footers but between Big Smoove, Trend and Burke I think our bigs at least hold their own. Warrior guards will be deadly.

I'm going to try to get the schoolyard to put it on again it was a small but decent crowd last year
