Title: OT: Favorite Drinking Spot At Marquette/Milwaukee
Post by: muarmy81 on April 17, 2007, 10:28:05 AM
Since I really didn't have a "favorite" pizza spot while at Marquette I figured I'd talk about my favorite places to drink while at Marquette. (1998-2002)
I enjoyed going to Rascal's on Wednesday Nights for the "bottomless pints" from 9 pm to close: $10 got you the endless glass of great beer.
Thursday Nights were reserved for Rock-Bottom Brewery for their free pool/buffalo wings and endless rock bottom brewery beers all for $10.
Friday and Saturday were spent at Cafferys for $5 pitchers of Miller

I forgot to mention Wolski's and what was the name of that one place that had the "Brain Buster" drink?

Bryants.

we were big fans on La Fuente before if got so big.

Used to be able to go there when we were underage and have a lot of fun for not a lot of money.

It's still fun there... but the prices are higher and it's ALWAYS busy.

AMEN.

Others:
-Wolski's is one of a kind, and great after a Lakefront Brewery tour. Real (non-electronic) dart boards!
-Bryant's. Brainbusters. Enough said.
-La Perla/Fuente. (Relatively) cheap food and potent margaritas (though La Fuente's are a bit better). A good way to kick off your night.
-Any place with a decent patio (Caffrey's, Bar Louie, The Harp, McGillycuddy's) is great during the summer.
-How about this one: the parking lot at Miller Park.

The 'lanche will always be #1.  A $20 purchase of a personalized mug meant 16 oz  taps for $.50, meaning $5.00 went a long way.  Lived less than a block away for 3 years.  I regret I never got my mug, wish I had that on a shelf somewhere.
Other old favorites, probably #2 was Thoma's - lot of great memories followed by The Harp across the street especially with the 7am open.  Conways, the Glocc, Green Tree, Murph's, The Gym, OD's, Good Time Charlies and O'Pagets as a warm up and for a beer or more on walks to the games.  Good times good times

Marquette Bars: Avalanche, Theo's, Hegarty's and the Harp and Shamrock as the sun rises.

Milwaukee Bars: Wolski's, Bryant's (a lounge actually, not a bar), Yield on the East Side is a good new place.

countless nights spent at Murphy's.

1)  1 block from the house I lived at
2)  air conditioning (something missing from the house I lived at)
3)  a serious dart addiction
4)  $2 or $2.50 mugs of delicious Miller Lite
5)  $5 tall captain & cokes, with the special buy one get 2 free deal I had earned.   8)

Lunch at Heg's with the drunk mailmen was always fun.  Great grilled ham & cheese.

Off campus:

Bret's/Fitzgibbons
The Harp
Bryants
BBC
Vitucci's
The Lodge for pizza & pitcher night.
the list goes on.....

I've heard great things about the 'lanche, I wish it had been there when I was there.  My younger brothers are/have attended marquette and the last time I was there i went drinking with them to some of the "new" places.  One of those was cans...wasn't too impressed.  Those that find the hole in the wall bars where you can have a great time for a little money were key for college kids.  Again, that's why I scheduled my drinking week around the specials at different bars around town.

I loved the Avalanche superbar, but there is definately nostalgia at play for a lot of people. When I was at MU (93-97) there was a core group of people who went there regularly and that was about it. Now you hear people talk about all the times they had at the Lanche and I know they were never there because I was (probably unfortunately) in there a few times a week. I remember going in there one time in '96 with a bunch of guys a year ahead of me who were graduating and there were maybe 25 people in there. In '97 a lot of freshman and sophomores (read:underage) were going there, but at the end it was nowhere near as popular as people make it out to be. As for it closing, it was the same group of idiots starting fights every week that cause it to close. It wouldn't have closed for a couple of more years if it wasn't for the same group of jagoffs.

The Midget Tavern. On Wells btw 23rd and 24th. Burned down (with the apartment building around it on X-Mas eve 94, I think.) Owned by Mike Dugan.

Harp and Shamrock on Wells btw 22nd and 21st.

The unquestioned champion of all time - The Lanche.

Murphy's will always be my number 1.  As seniors we were there 5 nights a week.  Especially loved 2.50 long islands on Thursdays and 1 dollar pitchers after home basketball games.  We would go around the student section getting tickets from freshmen so we could get dollar pitchers.  6 of us once took over the foosball table to hold our pitchers....I think we got something like 30 for 6 of us on a Wednesday night.

Rock Bottom was outstanding on Thursday nights as was Bryants if we had underage friends with us.

Greentree on state

Ah it was nice when there were enough bars where every class and age had their own bar to enjoy.

Ihe Lanche may be something that gained mythical proportions for some, I do not know what the attendence was like during the mid-late 90's.  When I was in school the 'Lanche was packed every weekend and most nights.  Myself and my roomates drank every night.  My observation has been MU softened up quite a bit over the years, and maybe years later the the bums or the cheap REd, White and Blue was not appealing to the new core of students.  I do not know.  I will say that whether it was Murph's, the Gym, OD's, Toma's, Conways , Hegarty's and on and on they were all packed on the weekends and many nights.  Seeemed different crews hung at different bars.  Murph's was always an underclassmen bar. OD's seemed to be the small Greek contingent, Gym and Avalanche upperclassmen. Hegarty's alot of Shroeder people, The Green Tree underclassmen etc.

Graduated in '89.   Lived at the Avalanche my last two years.   Ardmore was a fun place my freshman year.  Also Goodtime Charlie's and another bar over there that had 32 Oz for like $2.   Green Tree-raffled off bongs and a hookah.  Great drink specials.   My favorite bar in Milwaukee was Zur Kronz in Walker's Point.  -boots of beer, board games, and weird German music.   I enjoy Thurman's 15 now.

all of this talk about bars makes me want to take a moment of silence in rememberance of Greenfield Liquors that sadly burned to the ground on Cinco de Mayo in 1999(?).  You allowed me to buy alcohol with a fake id of an large Hispanic male when I am white as can be.  You sold me and my friends large garbage bags of random beer that was stored in your basement.  You sold me and my buddy 9 kegs that he crammed into his Ford Probe.  I miss you Greenfield Liquors.   :-*   :-*   :-*

This is pretty accurate.  Some time in the mid 1990's....Bars closed their doors or moved changing the dynamic dramatically.  I feel sorry in a way for kids who graduated after about the mid-1990's......

The Gym moved to where the Ardmore was, and is now again called something else.  Ardmore bar import Wednesdays....and happy hours for youngsters....Murphy's moved across the street and is still there with not 1 /100th of the same feel or character.
The Lanche was hard core for Seniors and some Juniors....no underclassmen, but that changed as well.

Toma's, Grenn Tree, ....and many others shut down

Hegarty's was always that quiet little sparse law school grad school crowd.

Times were good when there were 12 plus bars to attend near campus.  Many different types of bars and crowds.  So many options.

But kids are resourceful and Iam sure find other options since those times.

I'm a member of the recent grad / not a lot of options crowd (grad '06).  I always had the best time at Caff's on Monday nights for progressives.  I'm not really a huge partier so we would get there right at 9:00, pay our $.50 / beer and have a few before it got too busy.

Now that I've moved over to Sennsenbrenner Hall Hegartys is definitely the way to go (at 4:00 in the afternoon after class).

I never warmed to the 'Lanche.   My freshman year, it was mostly O'Paget's for the dance floor (chicks dig guys who dance.  I figured that out early)and O'Donohue's for the pool.    Sophomore and Junior year were spent at Tower, and I closed Hegarty's every Sunday first semester Jr year, I dashed to Heg's for a quick pitcher when a journalism Prof was late for a final, and I met a PoliSci Prof there for a review when the final was on a Monday and we couldn't find a place on campus to have the review.   Man, I loved Heg's.   Senior year, I lived at 22nd and Michigan, so I spent most of my senior year at the Gym.    With the frequent Wednesday night Import night at the Ardmore just to break up the monotony.    And I was able to stagger home from all of them.

Bars Today:

Murphy's is turning more and more into a dance club. Frat boy heaven. Watered down drinks, bartenders are there for the eye candy, not much else.

Caffrey's (Ardmore) was popular for progressives, but ceased that promotion. Still popular for the very wide selection of beer.

Harp and Shamrock isn't a popular spot. Mostly townies, a sparse showing on the weekend from MU students.

Conway's never ventured in there. I know a bartender I'd rather not talk to all night long.

Jim Hegarty's the best food on campus. A good mix of a crowd, no underclassmen. Very laid back, and my favorite bartenders on campus.

Murphy's and Caffrey's now are turning into Water Street lite.  Medicore bartending, water-downed drinks, DJs (hell, Caffrey's is moving their bathrooms to create a dance floor).  I might be somewhat jaded towards the Murphy's now; I was friends with all the bartenders my senior year (04-05) and was pretty tight with the former manager.  I was lucky enough to open up a tab, order pretty much anything I wanted, and cash out for about $10-15 (plus a generous tip).

However, the patio at Caffrey's still remains one of my favorite places to be when I come up there during the Summer, especially on Summerfest weekends.  You can take their shuttle back from Summerfest and it is a veritable young alumni reunion.  And since it's heated, it's not rare for you to have a beer outside as late as Halloween.

Off campus, I'd have to cast a vote for Bryant's, but that's a place you can only go once in a while since the hangover the next morning if you have one too many (multiple Brainbusters is NOT a good idea from experience).  The patio at McGillycuddy's is also great during the summer, and Brothers is spacious and usually has decent deals (although I was more partial to O'Danny's and the Oak Barrell before they closed).  If you want an adventure, get a DD and take a trip to Leff's Luckytown off 76th and State in 'Tosa.  Just try not to get shot coming home down State at bartime  ;)

Still, my favorite bar of all time was the one we built in my best friend's apartment, Biff McGuire's.  We converted an extra bedroom and the living room of his place into a full-fledged bar (complete with custom napkins and match books).  We would have people there before the bar, while we are out at the bar, and after bartime, so we pretty much had to take a weekly trip to Discount Liquor on Oklahoma Ave. to keep the place stocked since we drank so much.  Toss in a couple of couches, two mini fridges full of beer and mixers, digital cable, and an XBox, and sometimes I wonder how I ddin't fail out my senior year with the amount of time spent and alcohol consumed over there  ???

Hegarty's pre-2001 was the best.  Steve Wolf ran that place into the ground.     Since then my favorite campus bar is Caff's.  It may sound goofy, but I really enjoy drinking at the Annex.    It's unbelievably cheap

My favorite bar in Milwaukee was Zur Kronz in Walker's Point.  -boots of beer, board games, and weird German music.

The boot at Zur Krone's .... awesome call. Many a drunken adventure getting to and from that place.

Surprised at no mention yet of the Unicorn. Cool setting and the best place in town for live music.

On campus: Gym, Thoma's and the Lanche (or, as Babs Bush says, the Launch).

Caffrey's is rennovating their bathrooms to add a dance floor?  I hope that's not true because if you want to "club" you can go down to water street and hit have a nice day cafe or any one of those other "clubs" and pay $8 for a beer or $10 for a water down drink.

I may be in the minority here, but I was actually happy when the Gloc closed. That place SUCKED. I used to get upset when friends said they were going there. Gosh, I hated that bar. There was some Lounge place like on 76th or something, damn I can never remembe the name.  Low lights, velour, very "Sinatraesque" that was fun from time to time.

By the way, this might help jog some memories

I agree on the Gloc sucking too.  I went there once underage b/c we were told they didn't card.  They carded.  We left.  But there were about 15 really wierd people there at the bar and that was it.  The second time I went there, on a Thursday night after summerfest, they were closed.  F-em.

I think it got sort of popular a couple of years ago but probably just due to the lack of bars on campus.

They're ripping out the bathrooms in the front of the bar and moving them to the back corner where the dartboards were located near the stairwell to the patio and extending them into their storage area.

Once that's done I'm assuming they'll close the bar up for a few weeks while they rip out the current bathrooms, which will open up a pretty massive amount of space.  The DJ booth is adjacent to the current bathrooms, and with the amount of floor space to be opened up, I wouldn't be shocked if it were some sort of raised floor surrounded by railings.

Murphy's has added live music on certain Saturday nights, which is an absolute disaster (since this basically cuts the bar capacity by 1/3).  Plus they've started advertising more broadly through the city in The Onion and so forth.  With prices and service the way they are at the main campus bars, you might as well go to Water Street or North Ave. for the scenery.

The times, they are a changin'.

That's a shame... both of those bars were always good neighborhood places where we could always meet up with all of our friends (not everybody had a cell phone in 2000).

Anyways, if both of those bars do develop more of a water st. flavor, it might open up the market space for another venue to open and fill the "neighborhood niche"

Obviously MU probaby isn't a big fan of adding more bars, but if you found the right location near campus, you could probably open up a nice little place. (Location is probably the biggest hurdle).

Also, the Annex is still crazy cheap, and honestly has the best facility. It's a little "stale" in there when it's empty, but it offers a ton of acivities (bowling, NFL, College football, College hoops, live music, pool, fooseball, darts, golden tee, etc.)

Koz's mini bowling on the south side was always fun.  A bunch of drunk college kids slamming small bowling balls into the shins of the stoned 13 year old kids manually resetting the pins.  Pure Milwaukee.

The Lanche, of course...but here were some others:  Kernan's Tap on Wells between OD's and the Lanche.  Talk of the Town.  Lenny's on State.  Bingo's.  Liquor stores:  Marquette Diquors, Doc's, State Street Liquors for cheap kegs.  There was a great neighborhood bar at 23rd and State with a nice pool table that I forgot the name.  With Lenny's this was a rough neighborhood at night.  Favorite sign was on the Ardmore door:  "Live Dancing".

My favorite was Bryant's.  Name a natural disaster and they had a drink for it.

Whoever mentioned Zur Kronz, thank you.  I had the beer in a boot once and wanted to go back but could never recall the name of the place.  Now I know.

I have an older brother who used to tell me about Lenny's. The one i remember most is about a guy stumbling in and the bartender screaming "get him out of here". It turns out the guy had been stabbed and they didn't want the cops in there. My brother and his buddys sat around and drank their beers while they chalked out the poor guy.

FV Grunts, Greentree (with owner Arty), State House (dollar pitchers on e day a week and a chance to hit the bell with a coin and win a drink), Conways (pool tables), Zur Krones( the boots) and O'Pagets. Hated the Gym and Ardmore. The Lanche was a good starting out joint and was where my brother and Chris Farley hung out. If not for my intense study habits I might have enjoyed these places even more.

This place came and went quickly in the early 90's, but I can't believe that no one mentioned the Brown Bottle for two-for-one Thursdays.  Actually the bar may still be there (I have no idea), but the special went away after MU students discovered it and absolutely flooded the place.  Lasted about a year if I recall.  Nice place.

Also I'm amazed people still go to Bryant's.  It was during my era that it was "discovered", (not by me).  That place is awesome.  Although I've been killing myself trying to remember the name of the owner's wife who was the main cocktail waitress there.  I remember dropping in a few years after graduating and she was retired from serving drinks, but she was still drinking at the bar.  Anyone remember her name?  Betty? Judy? Something like that.

The Brown Bottle was great.  They had a free taco buffet once a week (Tuesday maybe?) that was a must.  Also had an around the world beer club.  Once you drank all of their 100 or so different beers you won a prize.

One more for consideration - the Brown Bottle Pub.  Nice off-campus bar...great music...great bartenders...great atmosphere...and unfortunately closed.  It doesn't trup the 'Lanche, Heg's, etc.  But it deserves a mention.

I think I have killed off too many brain cells. There are a couple that I can't remember and I don't think have been mentioned here.

One was a dance club downtown in the early 80s across from the Stone Toad, called Park Avenue.  Monday night was college night, $1 32 oz beers and wine cooler-like drinks. Great place to meet women.

The bar across from State House had progressive night. Beers started out at a nickel and went up 5 cents an hour until it hit the pricey sum of  a quarter.

I was a bouncer at State House on Monday nights when they had the $1 pitchers. Pay was basically $10 and all the beer I could drink.

I am suprised that no one mentioned one of the best places to drink - Mugrack on the Road, when they would have the outdoor grill concerts on Friday afternoons and set up beers and burgers in the mall. Great way to spend a Friday afternoon.

Loved O.P.s, may the owner, Bernie Jr. RIP.

Drank at Lenny's with Chris Farley and others early AM.

The other place no one mentioned was the Brewery tours at Pabst. Half hour all you could drink. What more can you ask for? I remember doing the Friday afternoon tour, catching a buzz, then heading down to the English Pub downtown (can't remember its name either) for their free buffett.

Lastly, the semesterly block parties thrown by the school were a great place for a beer. How many other Universities sponsored a 10,000 person 200 keg party?

Caffery's was my favorite spot.  sounds cheesy, but it was like my "Cheers" to me.  drinks were cheap, staff tried to get to know your name, wasn't a hole-in-the-wall while at the same time didn't try to be too classy.

then the change came in Dec.  Caff's was owned by 2 guys, one of the guys sold his share to the other, so ownership was down to one.  that one now owns both Murph's and Caff's.  that's why if you've been in Caff's in the past 4 months you'd realize it is becoming Murph's-Lite.  the dj booth sucks- along with DJ Push PLAY (who a couple of us decided to name), the staff had an 90% turnover, and they changed some of the promotions and raised some prices.  i.e.- Monday's Progressive Night was $1 @9pm going up $0.50 each hr.  now it's $1 domestic, $2 everything else @ 9pm.  getting a Strongbow for a buck or two made Monday's awesome.

Lucielle's Paino Bar was great 2yrs ago.  Ladies Night/College Night on Thurs (so guys could get deals on drinks too, great idea) had lines around the corner.

I'll agree with pretty much everything you said. Caffrey's was great. Was. Cheap pitchers on Sunday, progressives on Monday, Ladies' night on Wednesday (I'm not the right gender to get the special, but Ladies' night is still special for guys for obvious reasons)... There was a time when I knew the nightly specials at Murphy's, Caffrey's and Hegarty's. Sadly, that time has passed...

Lucille's is a lot of fun. I heard they brought back the Ladies/College night on Thursdays, though now that I'm no longer in college I haven't had a chance to get down there lately. Damn full-time jobs...

With this delightful thread revived, a quick story ...

I lived on 20th and Clybourne for about 18 months (summer, last year, summer). I kept thinking that I should go to Miss Katie's to get a beer. Just to say that I did it. Finally one night, I think the spring of my last year, I went there around 11pm on my way home from other bars with people.

One of my weirdest experiences in a bar. Maybe 6-8 townies there. After 4-5 minutes there, one guy literally asks me, "Who the hell are you?" 10 ounce glasses for beer. It's too bad they don't try to cater to Marquette students a little ... it's not like there isn't a market for an alternative to Murphs/Caffs.

Has anyone here ever gotten a beer there? I think I might be the only person I know who has ... not the worst place in the world ... but humorous that no one mentions it.

Miss Katie's is the place that has a sign on the door about Bill CLinton stopping there right?

After reading through this entire thread on my phone yesterday, thinking it was new, I am still saddened by the "downfall" of Caffreys.  Was by far my favorite.  In fact I met my wife there in 02 over a bucket of $1 Old Milwaukee Red label cans. The $3.75 tall mixed drink price was delightful at the time, and IIRC from a couple years ago that price is now about $6.50.

OGBH changed ownership recently. It sucks now, they lost all their good managers/bartenders and servers. Most of the people that worked at OGBH went next door to the Brat House for awhile when that place first opened up. OGBH has had the same band on weekend for years, which gets annoying since they know 0 "german" songs, du hast doesn't count and they play off an ipod anyways.

folks should have to state their attendance years before responding to this:
86-91
Frosh - Hegartys  (I was 17 - remember celebrating my 18th birthday in there when the drinking age was already 21
Soph - Junior - ardmore
Senior - studied
Super-senior - had a beer 365 consecutive nights at the gym.  except the nights they were closed, then it was Ardmore.

That's an interesting progression.  Getting a little more sophisticated each year, before settling on a neighborhood tavern and pre-game spot.

If everyone who claims they were always at the 'Lanche was telling the truth, the line to get in would've stretched to Lake Michigan.

I graduated in '99, went to the 'Lanche my freshman and sophomore year, and it was dead.  The bouncer was dick who would take fake IDs and sell them back to you for $15.  I completely understand the charm of dive bars, (I tended bat at Conway's), but the nostalgia about the Superbar is getting ridiculous.

Ha.  I always thought of the 'Lanche as 'interesting'.  Admittedly, it was never my #1 hangout.

I guess for me ('79-'83)

Frosh: Grunt's
Soph: OD's
Junior: Gym, Ardmore and Glock
Senior: Gym, Ardmore.

As a native we used to hit spots all around town, especially in the summer when my HS classmates were home.  Used to play a little game where one guy would name a street and another would then choose a cross street and we'd go to the closest bar we saw at that location.  When our entire HS offensive line was back (several played in college, one in the NFL), we'd get a little extra adventurous.  Never once had a problem but we were always courteous and respectful.  Told our story to the locals more than once.  They usually 'approved' and sometimes wished out loud that they could do the same.

For a lot of us older folks, when the drinking age was 18, everyone went to the bars, the Lanche included.  I graduated in '84 and I don't remember it being "dead" at any time I was in there except if we went early afternoon.  Otherwise, we spent most of our time at the Gym, OD's, State House and Good Time's.  Oh, and as the list below from our yearbook shows, the Lighthouse made the list of favorite drinking establishments.

The nostalgia is going a bit overboard, and I'm guilty as charged.  And I'm sure the Lanche was dead in your era at MU.   Many of the places talked about by Scoopers who are older than me were dead or gone when I was at MU.  But I fully believe everyone and their story.  As Glow said above, everyone has great memories during their time at college, because college can be a great time, and people make their own good memories.

But how and where they make those memories are cyclical.

I was in high school is the mid 70's when dance clubs and disco were big.   We dressed up in dress pants and large pattern polyester shirts (and some guys, not me, in 1-1/2 inch heels) and went to dance clubs, and places like RC's on the upper East Side.  It was great and I have great memories.

Then thankfully the disco era crashed and burned, with tombstone being Disco Demolition at Wrigley, and the pendulum swung back to jeans, T-shirts and dive bars.  During the 78-83 time frame when I was there, the campus bars were generally THE place to be.  I remember seeing dozens if not hundreds of students at 2am Friday nights walking through the 16th and Wells intersection heading from campus bars to parties or home.  While we went to many other non-dive bars, many good memories were made at the campus bars.

But in the 83 time frame when I was leaving, times were changing again.  Places like Park Avenue, Water Street and the East Side were back in vogue.  I had a great time at those places before I headed out of town.  But my best memories were at the campus bars.  And it is good that others had great memories at other places doing other things.  I'm just glad people remember their time at MU fondly.

I saw an I closed Wolskis sticker once in a bar in Illinois and another in Florida of all places. Was really odd.

Found one in a bar in Kiln, MS once, clearly plastered by a fellow pilgrim.

That's the place. I remember a Confederate flag above the entrance and bras hanging from the ceiling. Run by his wife's cousin or something like that.

Favre's brother ran the Broke Spoke in Muskego for the few years it lasted

I saw one at a pub in Cusco, Peru a few years back and thought that one wouldn't be topped. Then last year I saw one on the door of a small lodge in the backcountry in Patagonia, way down there in southern Chile. Didn't see that one coming AT ALL.

I have one I've been saving for awhile. Been debating whether or not to place it in Bogota Colombia or London.

So Les Stroud has closed Wolski's.  Whoda thunk it?

I'll be going back this weekend and getting a sticker from Wolski's. Spent a lot of time there my senior year but haven't been back since. (2012)

Other planned stops: The Harp, Brat House, Safe House (my grandma's favorite when she visited my cousin back in the day-> don't break tradition), Hi Hat maybe? Sticking to an itinerary with a large group on a Saturday night in Milwaukee have a way of... being difficult sometimes.

Anyone else going to the Creighton game?

Douie Lee's was my favorite post bar/party place to hang. I had the top 3 records on Pole Position there. Best greasy bar food. Hated it when they tore it down for the Campus Town expansion.

Better check Safehouse-- I think it's currently closed for renovations.

There are none, the best left is the top of the Pfister, although the old bar on the first floor was better.  Cold windy night, cograce in a snifter, old black touch singer from St. LOUIS, memories of when Milwaukee was really great.

Seriously!  The random DJ booth and dance floor, Pole Position, darts...
