No doubt the athletic ability is there.

However...there are questions about the rest of his game.

ESPN has him graded at a 90 right now... Streaky shooter, can get to the rim at will, more of an athlete than bball player right now.. Didn't say much about passing, but seems like he is more of a 1 than a 2 and would be great high-level insurance for the JC injury.

Yeah I would have no problem getting this guy. Signing Chicago guys will always help us there.  He looks like he can play, with a little room for improvement.  Plus, its not like all of our recruits have to be top 100 guys.

USC just got a commitment from a 5'7" high school senior. They also have 3 other 5'11" underclassmen on their roster (although none, to date, have gotten a lot of time). W/4 small guards already in the fold, it's interesting that he says USC has a slight lead for his services.

Looks like a very fun player to have on the team, serious serious serious hops

He has hops.  What is the rest of his game like?

He also had over 30 home runs one year for the Dodgers...he's multi-dimensional!!

some one  please tell me why we want this kid.  Please keep in mind that any point we bring in for the 2110 class may be your starting point depending on JC's recovery.  We can do better.

With exception of Vander Blue to date, all the better ones are going elsewhere.

I do not belive MU has offered Smith as of yet so being in his top 3 may not mean all that much.

Take a look at what is out there right now in terms of uncommitted point guards that are generally ranked above him and you'll  find that Smith is pretty much the top option left.  Everyone else either eliminated MU or MU wasn't and won't be involved.

Brandon Knight - MU not involved
Kyrie Irving - eliminated MU
Josh Selby - eliminated MU
Cory Josephy - eliminated MU
Gary Franklin - eliminate MU
Ray McCallum - MU not involved

That's it.  Beyond that you're getting into guys where the general opinion is that Smith is a better player, i.e. KC Ross-Miller, LaBradford Franklin, Pe'Shon Howard, Jordair Jett etc.  MU is involved with those guys as well.

Right now is not a good time to be looking for a Point Guard in 2010.

I'm confused, is there something you know about this kid that I don't. Granted I know next to nothing about this guy, but I'm guessing your in the same boat that I am. From those highlight reels you can tell he has the athleticism to play just at the D1 level. If UCLA is offering this kid, I'm feeling pretty confident that we should be in on him too.

We can do better.

That's a pretty tough comment to make.  The sky's the limit with his athletic ability.  Wade was pretty raw when we recruited him too.  Could we have done better than Wade?  ?-(

Not all offers are created equal.  The player may say he has an "offer," but there could be (and probably is) conditions involved.

If Reggie Smith wanted to commit to UCLA today, Howland very likely wouldnt take him.

bma...are you suggesting that MU should not be going after a point guard right now?  Because honestly, if Buycks plays the point, we are set for two years at the position with Acker and JC as back ups.  Maybe 2011 would be a better option.

There is a need for a guard in the 2010 class, as DB, DJO, and JC are the only guards on the roster for 2010.

However, as it stands now, the only top flight guard left is Vander Blue.

After that, the pool clearly drops off...but the need still remains.

I've got the answer----how 'bout we just sign Blue?

I wasn't suggesting anything, just pointing out that most of the top PG talent in 2010 is either committed or not going to look at MU so there aren't a whole lot of options left.

In theory I don't disagree with you, with JC being pushed back a year not a whole lot of 2010 kids are going to want to come in and possibly sit behind him for four years(assuming he recovers fully).  Even 2011 is going to be tough to get a top kid at the position.

W/apparently not that much quality left (point guard wise), it makes sense to wait out Blue's (even though he's a combo guard) decision, rather than accept an offer from Smith, Jett, etc. We still have 2 other scholarships to fill, though, and we don't seem to be on other position players'  short list (not holding out hope on Asprilla or Mo Walker).

Great athleticism...

On the first video, out of all his "highlights," there was only one of him shooting, one fancy dribbling, and two lay-ups.

The rest were dunks.

I'd like to see more of the shooting and ASSISTS please.

Also, will he cramp easily?
