Why did you bring Wojo into the conversation?  This wasn't a discussion about Wojo.  LMAO.

Because I was contrasting to a different era.  Sorry you got triggered.  I will send out a warning next time.

More importantly, this week will be the 378 week in Marquette history that the team will be ranked by the AP Poll, drawing exactly even with ND, who yes indeed sucks.

Yes indeed, No Dick sucks.

Dukie V has us at 22, and lists us as team of the week....

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Marquette. Shaka Smart's team beat Villanova and Xavier.

Jeff Borzello of ESPN has Marquette as his team of the week too.

We consume similar products, so you know as well as I do that “what’s wrong with North Carolina?” would get far more of a discussion than “#20 Marquette/Seton Hall”. You’re right that the casual sports fan will float in late Feb, and obviously March, I just don’t think if I went up to a casual college hoops fan this afternoon and said “is Providence ranked?” that they would have any clue.

Being on SVP for 18 seconds at 11:45 pm at night is cool (I’m not being a dick here). Does it matter really though to anyone outside of Marquette? Probably not. If you’re a college hoops fan, you knew that happened half a day ago. The scroll is a dinosaur.

Being mentioned > Not being mentioned.

It’s not a huge measurable, but being ranked leads to being discussed in the national media which is good.

Because I was contrasting to a different era.  Sorry you got triggered.  I will send out a warning next time.

You realize that the only people here who get triggered about any "contrasting to a different era"/reference to Wojo are those of you who were Projos.  Comparing our current team/coach to the previous one(s) isn't some devious plan to tweak Projos.

I was just surprised to see you interject his name into this thread after you got triggered yesterday about me contrasting a potential first round NCAA loss by Shaka this year to the dynamics of a first round loss under Wojo.

FWIW - I feel being ranked in the Top 25 has value for the reasons Brew and 82 have articulated here.

I run a bracket pool with 400 guys. 380 of them would know more about national rankings. 19 others and I would know more about NET, Pomeroy, etc.

Did Vitale even write that? Sure seems pretty subdued.

From Jeff Borzello ESPN
Team of the Week: Marquette Golden Eagles
Shaka Smart wasn't supposed to make a huge impact in his first year at Marquette. The Golden Eagles finished one game below .500 last season, lost several key pieces and nobody was overly surprised when they were picked ninth in the Big East's preseason coaches' poll. Instead, they've played themselves into the top 25 with six straight wins and a Team of the Week performance.

Marquette started with as impressive of a win as we'll see all season in the Big East, going to Villanova and knocking off the Wildcats by three. It ended the game on a 21-9 run, capped by a Justin Lewis 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds left to pull out the win. Marquette held Villanova to 6-for-24 shooting from behind the arc and made 13 3s of its own. It was the Wildcats' worst offensive performance since their loss to Baylor in December.

On Sunday, Marquette continued to roll with an 11-point win over Xavier. Lewis once again led the way, finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds after going for 21 and seven against Villanova. It was another high-level performance down the stretch for the Golden Eagles, who held the Musketeers without a field goal from the 6:06 mark of the second half until a layup with 34 seconds left.

To say being ranked doesn’t matter is just foolish. Rankings are published/posted on every local/regional sports site in the country.  The Top 25 scores are what gets scrolled, reported and noticed.  Maybe they’ve taken a back seat in terms of seeding but for alumni, national recognition, school pride and to an extent (even if minimal), recruiting; being ranked can only be viewed as a positive.

I get all this and I enjoy having Marquette ranked as much as anyone in this room. However, as Warriorchick pointed out earlier, Coach Shaka acknowledged the only real ranking is the NCAA tournament.

The good news is I felt from the beginning that we were BUILT TO WIN NOW! I lost some faith, I admit, when we lost to UCLA and the red roadkill in December and then started with three losses in Big East play. But, tell you what, this team has shown a competitive fight I haven't seen in our teams often in at least eight years. The way we fought, even against UCLA where we were way down and fought to close the gap was exciting.

I suspect the way we play defense and scrap for everything would make the Late Coach McGuire very proud. Our offense is different because it has to be, but he'd be as excited as anyone if he were alive to see this! This is the kind of team that can surprise folks and go a lot deeper than you think in NCAAs in March.

My question is, once we are ranked, do we lose our underdog mentality?  Does the anger over the Cretin loss burn as bright after the sixth win as it did after the first or second?  Or are these guys just so much better than they were early in the season that it doesn't matter?  I'm crossing my fingers and picking the latter, with them going from "I'm mad" to "I believe!"

This doesn't seem to be a team that will sit on its laurels. The coach and the personnel won't let them. Plus, there is a strong chance that we are vegas underdogs in both games this week while being ranked. That alone is enough fuel for bulletin board material.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Ners, look, I would hope you could understand the difference between the context in which you brought up Wojo and the one I did and how they are different.  But I guess not.

Again, I will send you a DM with a trigger warning in the future.  I apologize for my lack of foresight in this matter.  I hope you are OK.

This really sums it up. Because of the tournament this sport still has a lot of casual fans.

Marquette is ranked #25 in CBS Sports Gary Parrish’s  Top 25 and 1

Parish just posted today's update. We are up to #20 in the Top 25 and 1 and he had a lengthy excerpt about us at the top of the article.

Maybe someone has already figured this out, but I wonder if there has ever been another team that went from not even receiving votes straight into the top 20?  If there was, I'd imagine it would have been a blue blood on a down year coming off of a week of big wins.  Which only means one thing:  we're a blue blood!

We’re not ranked in the top 20.
