Title: MU weak vs. zone defense
Post by: TexMex on December 19, 2012, 09:29:46 PM
We crumble every single time we play against a zone defense. Not just this year, every year. If I were playing against MU I would go with a Zone every single time and I would probably win!

Now that I think of it. That's probably why we see so many zones and lose so many games to inferior teams.

We've lost one game to an inferior team all year.  And prior to this year, Buzz's teams ate up zones.

We don't have the Crowder, Jimmy, or Lazar to get at the free throw line and hit a jumper or distribute. I was hoping Jamil would be that guy, but he hasn't been great. Lockett could be good there. We just don't have someone to give the ball too and get a bucket on the perimeter.

We really tore apart that GB zone for 16 second half points tonight.

This is just flat out wrong.

This is going to get good.

We didn't "eat up" zones. We had strong transition that most of the time easily compensated by scoring points in bunches off of opposition turnovers and missed shots.

Sorry, but no.  We lost to Syracuse last year, and that is the only team that I can recall we struggled with against the zone.  There were teams that went zone against MU that had to switch back to man almost immediately.

The only exception to this was Norfolk when Buzz admitted he was surprised because they hadn't played zone before and MU hadn't practiced against it.  The very next game they faced a zone and shredded it.

No we attacked zones last year because defenses had to respect the outside shooting of Jae and DJO.  We can't penetrate into the lane because defenses don't have to respect the outside shooting.

I didn't agree with you last year and I don't agree now. UWGB plays a 3-2 most of the game and MU cannot get it behind the zone tonight.  Jamil on fire in the first half and the guards cannot get it to him in the 2nd or flashing in the wide post or free throw line.  Derek needs to start as PG against the zone.  I agree with Equlaizer...nothing has changed.

Maybe I am just letting my recollection of bad Crean zone offenses cloud my judgement too much...

Just adding that tonight's A:TO ratio against the zone, as we saw last year, was below 1.00 again..at 0.78. It was brutal against Florida's zone at 0.86. That tells me 1) bad scheme and 2) Junior is only effective against a man.

I actually like Junior against a zone. He tries to penetrate the gaps. He had a bunch of turnovers tonight, but everyone else is standing on the perimeter and being tentative. At least he is attacking.

3) We're going to see a lot more zones

Just got back from the game.  Jamil had a good first half.  No one looked good in the second half.  It's time to give up on Jake Thomas. He's a shooter who can't make the open shot.  We definitely need Mayo's outside shot.

And that is not good. GTown has been playing a ton of zone this year. Obviously. Syracuse is going to play it. I saw Ollie attempt it in a game this year. ND has played it a few times this year as well.
