That sucks.   I am sure MU and the Big East will adapt.

Per Rothstein, Gavitt Games are done and won’t continue past this year

It actually says they are not playing next season and the future beyond that is doubtful. Probably done but given Rothstein as the source, I wouldn't take it as gospel

Worth highlighting that the Big 12 Battle games are also scheduled to conclude after next season.

Not a great time for this announcement since we are actively negotiating with Fox for TV deal.

Not sure that really matters.

Maybe they can get a TV deal with the CW.  I’ve been told it’s a big sports network

Top billing unless a rerun of Friends is scheduled.

Swapping in the ACC would be better anyway.

A game hosting Duke or even a trip to Cameron Indoor would be so awesome

I think a Fox-aligned conference matchup is more in order.

Not sure that really matters.

Our FS1/Fox matchups against the B1G has consistently driven strong ratings.  Hate to provide some pessimism around here, given the outlook projections for this season, but the BE ratings on FS1/Fox, compared to the B1G, are not great.  Now, we have consistently provided improving ratings for essentially a new network since 2013.  But we aren't the B1G (in ratings).  If Fox wanted to instruct the B1G to keep the Gavitt Games, they could (especially if it owns the rights to both the B1G and the Big East).  The harsh reality as to why these games are ending could not come at a worse time.  Couple that with the quotes from Val that, while negotiations are continuing to be held, they haven't really gone anywhere.  If we got an offer we liked, we would have already accepted it.

Having one less strong OOC game (especially under the banner of a conference challenge) is tough.  With all of these power conferences moving to 16-plus teams, and we continue to be stuck at 11, is also an alarming trend.

Will be interesting to see what happens for sure.

You hit on a lot of good points. But the essential problem is that the BE ratings are small compared to the B10 ratings. And with all of that content spread out over the course of an entire season, the loss of the Gavitt Games is a very minor part of that.

The conference should dictate that these games be replaced with high-level match ups. But even if they do that, it won't fix the underlying point.

The Big East just needs to keep putting a really competitive product on the floor as they have done in the past.  Cooley at Georgetown and Pitino at St John’s could not have come at a better time to possibly increase ratings.  GT seems to still draw eyeballs and will draw even more when good.  New York ispeals for itself.  With a host of other teams doing their part, the league is in as strong of a position as they can be with these negotiations.  Hopefully, good news will come this year announcing a new deal with Fox who has done an excellent job promoting the league.

Would be a big slap in the face/reality check if a good deal can not be negotiated.

It would not surprise me if The CW Sports Network made a strong bid for Big East TV contract if Fox and Big East don't come to terms . The CW needs product .

Will be interesting to see CWs ACC Basketball ratings this season
