Don’t take them downtown.  They’ll end up dead

and that's why there aren't any custard joints downtown

Thought you'd be a Solly's and Gilles kinda dude, hey?

Solly's absolutely.  Gilles no.  Murf's is a lot better than Gille's.  Ted's is nice.

Leon's is better than all three

Yes, and it's not even close.

You got that right. We cannot leave Milwaukee without stopping at Leon's. And since my son and his family moved to the Chicago burbs, he takes the kids to Leon's (about an hour each way) once a month or so.

Leon's butter pecan frozen custard is one of the great things in the world. Period.

Oscar's is great.  Solly's is awesome because half of every bite is melting butter.  Sobleman's used to be great but got too big for it's own good.  Elsa's is solid.  Haven't had Nite Owl but have heard it's right up there with anything in Milwaukee.

Leon's has the best vanilla custard I've ever tasted. The best raspberry one too. Unfortunately, that's it. They have very good basic flavors but the lack of variety is a drawback for me. Unless it's a bad flavor day, I'd choose Kopp's 10/10 times over Leon's. Kopp's Cream City Champs? Or their Pancakes and Maple Syrup? Pure perfection.

Leon's has the higher floor. Kopp's has the higher ceiling.

I agree on Leon's vanilla and Kopps being the best spot out there.

Oscars is great for Milwaukee burger standards.

Idk what era of soblemans you're referring to but it was always just decent.

The Blackjack Burger is the best burger I've ever had and it's not particularly close. Milwaukee has many solid options, but that stands well above the rest, IMO.

Unless you actually don't like butter pecan, it's borderline heresy that you aren't acknowledging Leon's butter pecan! The custard itself is amazing, and they wait until the end to put the salty, buttery, crunchy pecans on so they don't get soggy.

Once upon a time, it was one of their rotating flavors of the day, along with raspberry and mint and maple and a couple others. But several years ago, the demand for butter pecan was too great, so they made that a regular one, along with vanilla and chocolate.

Their chocolate, BTW, is not good. Which is weird, because the rest are great.

Cafe Lulu and Cafe Hollander both have fantastic burgers.

Cafe Hollander in Madison used to have a Belgian bone marrow burger that was amazing.

I don't like strawberry flavored ice cream, shakes or milk normally (or strawberries themselves), but Leon's strawberry custard is my favorite custard/ice cream in the world.  Yes, the menu is short/limited.  But that's because you don't need anything more than their plain vanilla, butter pecan, or strawberry cones.  If you want to throw some kind of topping on them, go for that too.  But I'll take a plain old strawberry cone from Leon's over a peanut butter cup cone (my favorite non-Leon's custard flavor out there) or peanut butter cup sundae from Oscar's anyday.

I put Kopps' and Gilles' custards about 3rd tier, just above true fast food like Culvers.  Leon's and LeDuc's stand alone at the top, then there's a solid size drop to Murf's and Oscar's, then a huge drop to Kopps and Gilles.  Kopps's burgers are better than Murf's, so if you want to bump the restaurant as a whole up because of that I wouldn't argue with that.  But neither touches Leon's or Leduc's.

I think someone on Scoop mentioned a place in Burlington for best custards.  I can't remember the place, and haven't tried it yet.  Maybe that's for next week when I'm back up in WI.

I haven't had their butter pecan (usually not a fan of that flavor, don't dislike it but never reach for it) or their chocolate. Next time I go I'll try the one and avoid the other!

You won't be disappointed, my friend.

Every time my wife and I see a commercial building for sale in a walkable area of Charlotte, we joke that we should buy it and turn it into Leon's South!

Thanks.  I think it was Adrian's, because I remember it being about the custard specifically.
