Should MU Retire Otule's Number?
« on: February 26, 2014, 10:15:42 PM »
I don't mean now but years down the road do you think his 6 years, overcoming obstacles, injuries, one eye, inspirational story, does this would warrant a jersey retirement?

No. I love Chris. Root for him more than any player on the team. But no.

Very nice kid and story, but if you look at the people who have their number retired, he does not belong.

What marquette did before the season by honoring him did a good enough job in my opinion. Jersey retirings should be held for the best players.

His number, no. But he's been here long enough to retire.

Retire his jersey, No. But is he eligible for a pension?

Father Kelly deserves to have his clerical collar retired before Otule's jersey.

Not the right honor for Chris. Retiring numbers is for on the court performance.

I admire Chris for everything he has fought through.   He is the kind of person that every parent would be proud of.   But he hasn't accomplished enough on the court to warrant retiring his number or jersey.

It's unanimous, no.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I would think an appropriate honor would be to have an award named after him that they give annually at the awards banquet for the player that best exemplifies the characteristics that Buzz appreciates so much about Chris.

That's what I was thinking.  Like the "Chris Otule Perseverance Award" or something similar.

I like the idea of having an award named for him.  Rewarding hard work, commitment, positive attitude.

His career warrants a proper send off on senior day and a touching speech by Buzz about hard work and perseverance.  He does not deserve to get his number retired.

Yes.... on the sole condition that he hits a game winning 3 as the clock expires on Apr 7.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

After his second term as President of the United States I would be okay with hanging his jersey in the rafters. A duplicate should be hung in his presidential library. But short of that, no.

Was this topic written by Huffington Post to get click thrus or something? Seriously?

(and yes, I clicked and am commenting so...good work?)

No. No. And no. Numbers aren't retired due to effort and will and working hard and doing your best. That's for daycare and first grade.

Should an end-of-the-year "award" be named after him? That I'd see no problem with. Those are based on what the coach/team sees day-to-day through the player's season/career.

The Chris Otule Longevity Award or the Chris Otule Spirit Award.

One for tenure; the other for keeping the team spirit high through entertainment.
