1. Can Theo breathe without getting called for a foul?
2. Jayce is stepping up.
3. McEwen was doing so well other than shooting until the last 3 minutes. Thanks for the late free throws.
4. I despise McClung. But I question Ewing's choice to sit him late.
5. Almost saw no bigs for anybody by the end.
6. Like Jan Brady kind of said, 'Markus, Markus, Markus.'. Except for free throws. If his 3 off the offensive board had gone with 3 minutes to go, it would have been the dagger.
7. Greg, heal faster. Need the depth.
8. Wojo went to the slowdown too soon.
9. Free throws matta late.
10. Wojo fouled late up 3. It worked.
11. Conference road wins are golden. Grab it and run with no apologies.
-
Ball don’t lie on McClung’s flop in the last minute.
-
Thought we played well. Thought Georgetown just hit some very tough shots. Yertseven hitting 15 foot fadeaways and two threes and Wayab hitting 3 well defended turnaround jumpers. I haven’t watched any of Georgetown this year until today, so maybe they actually make plays like that, but felt like those were shots that had some prayers answered.
Put some money on the moneyline today. Never a doubt, hey?
-
Also, touchy whistle all day, but it went both ways.
-
Bailey was a rather quiet but very steady force that game. Hit the glass and was defending well. Glad he's a soph. Jayce has been exactly what MU needed and it came it a great time. Markus, well, incredible as usual.
I don't have a problem with Mcclung. I don't see any attitude issues or anything. He's a fun player to watch when he's not against MU.
-
Huge win.
At least Koby is clutch at the line.
Markus is Markus.
Theo also screwed while the Turk coulda had 10 fouls the way the game was called.
McClung is a massive bi tch.
-
Markus misses 2 FTs on a trip and then Jayce hits 2 FTs on a trip. Who'd a thunk that.
Team showed some moxy after giving up the 7 point lead late to pull it out. Back to level in conference.
Referreeing sucked on both sides. Some really dumb fouls called out there on both teams.
-
Very nice road win. Bailey continues to improve and making a difference. He is becoming a very good rebounder.

I thought so too. They hit numerous shots with a Marquette player in their face. But Theo was awful again.
Out of 9 fouls by Jace and Theo, I don't think even 1 was defending the rim. That just can't happen game after game.
-
Nice win. Markus got his in rhythm. Rest of the boys stepped up. We are becoming a good team. Credit to GT, they truly have a top 25 offense.
-
Those 3 points the ref took away from Markus in the first half would have made this one much easier to win......
Great job fellas!
-
4. I think it was an offense - defense thing
8. I think He was trying to reduce possessions to preserve a big.
-
Wojo made an adjustment putting a bigger guy on McClunk at the end
-
Huge W. Markus man. Gonna miss him.
Onto SJU. Guys playing well. Feel much better about 10-8 than I did a week ago.
-

GY hit a lot of tough shots. Not looking forward to the game in MKE. But road wins sure feel nice
-
Markus is fantastic. I thought Georgetown played well. Marquette had to beat them.
-
Stupid to say every game BUT I will. St. John’s is a must win at home if we are goi g to be upper half this year. Good to have some momentum. Let’s burry the Johnnies!
-
Marquette showed a lot of grit. It seems like every game with Georgetown is a fun one to watch.

MU beat the Hoyas despite our bigs being in phantom foul trouble. Despite a Markus three being taken off the board. Despite McClung getting BS weak calls. Despite Gtown being on fire from 3pt range. Despite some crucial missed free throws. Despite being on the road.

Six total turnovers by MU. LOVE that stat.

1. No...his reputation precedes him. Similar to Heldt getting called for the pick before he even set it.
3. If I see Koby throw another cross court pass into the 3rd row I’m gonna scream.
6. Yes.
10. Just heard Wojo say on post game that under 10 seconds up by 3 points...they will foul. ? Seems contrary to the PC game.
-
I think the announcers said 25 minutes of game time between turnovers. One of Markus' to's was where Theo did not roll to the basket. Great game. Both teams played well. I didn't see any douchey actions by McClung.

10. There was 18 seconds left on the clock in the PC game. The shot went up with 9 seconds left. There was an instant under 10 seconds to foul before the shot went up, but these were different scenarios.

Or his team didn’t execute it properly vs PC.
-
Or his team didn’t execute it properly vs PC.
Wojo was able to call a timeout today and give the instructions. That didn’t happen against Providence and it would have been on the players to know to foul. I was ok not fouling against providence but happy they did today.
-
Or his team didn’t execute it properly vs PC.
This seems very No-Jo. Wojo can't coach his team for late game situations? Cut him some slack. Maybe a 25% 3 point shooter got lucky?
-
By the time it got below 10 seconds against Providence. There may have been an opportunity to foul, but you run the risk of a guy pulling up quick. Plus, we’d need our players to be watching the clock. So I think it’s better to go all in on fouling once they get beyond half court, or playing it out.
-
Or his team didn’t execute it properly vs PC.
Coaches are never going to be perfect, players are never going to be perfect, they just have to be good enough to win. Today they were. Enjoy.
-
Strong first half from Sacar and Bailey. Carried the team when Markus sat.
-
PIP+FTM: MU 46, GT 45
Second chance points: MU 17, GT 8
-
This seems very No-Jo. Wojo can't coach his team for late game situations? Cut him some slack. Maybe a 25% 3 point shooter got lucky?
It’s neither. Look, we have all seen coaches draw up plays in hoops, football, etc that don’t always get executed. I don’t know if that was the case then, but mentioning it as a possibility. It would seem to me the idea of fouling up 3 would be a consistent philosophy without much waivering. You either believe in it or you don’t with potentially some exceptions based on size or the other team if they are horrendous 3 point shooters.

The word out here is great win. However, people are still saying Cheeks doesn’t know basketball. I’m trying to stick up for the guy, but it’s getting ugly out here.

Dr. B
I like the trend on second chance points. Johnson has an eye for it and Bailey’s rebounding is getting better by the game.
-
Stupid to say every game BUT I will. St. John’s is a must win at home if we are goi g to be upper half this year. Good to have some momentum. Let’s burry the Johnnies!
St. John's absolutely should have beaten SH today. Would have been huge for all the other teams looking to stay in the conf race, especially with DePaul taking down Butler. Hall has a Villanova-like ability to make winning plays down the stretch this year.
-
Strong first half from Sacar and Bailey. Carried the team when Markus sat.
Yes. That was a key stretch. I never feel very confident once Markus sits. The fact he sat for 5 minutes and we either held serve or increased lead was huge. The rest Markus got while sitting may very well helped him down the stretch.
Thought Wojo coached a good game today. His long leash with Koby paid off at the end.
-
This seems very No-Jo. Wojo can't coach his team for late game situations? Cut him some slack. Maybe a 25% 3 point shooter got lucky?
Both of these things can be true.
And in this case, they are.

Jayce getting stronger. He will benefit with Ed taking a leave.

You guys gotta ruin every thread hey?

That was a terrible call, worse all year, especially when it was done 3 times by GT with no calls.

He expert, how did Jayce do today...you are oddly silent since early December when you trashed him at every turn.
No. Real audience out here. About 30 MU fans who think you’re not smart. I’m trying to stick up for you.

? No. Duke was dribbling at the top of the key with 6.5 seconds left looking to make the pass. Shot went up with under 5 seconds left.

Stupidity....always the common denominator
-
Nice win. Important win. Nice going, Warriors!
Yup, got a little momentum going. A win against St Johns would be really big. It would be holding serve, but to get above .500 after starting 1-3. That would be a nice boost.
-
Stupidity....always the common denominator
Christ you are toxic.
-
Georgetown had the higher eFG% per KenPom. MU won this one by taking care of the ball (lowest TO% of the season), rebounding well on both ends and getting to the line. Nice road win.
-
Really nice play to get Markus the wide open corner three late. Musta been a busted coverage by Gtown, because we all known that Wojo can't adjust/only allows hero ball.

Weve been really good at play recently.

This was fun basketball to watch today. Not exactly heavy on defensive stops, but still a great game with two teams playing well and going toe to toe.
Georgetown controlled the pace a little more than I expected, but I thought we adjusted to that really well. And even with some questionable fouls, we never looked rattled. The composure and effort today were awesome. The mental game today was strong. Hopefully that provides something to build on for the rest of the season.
Also, Markus dropping 40 doesn't even surprise me anymore. This kid is something else.
-

The play that led to Theo’s dunk with around 12 minutes left in 2nd half was a thing of beauty.
-
Marquette basketball is the hobby. Say, not going to rip Jayce Johnson today? Why not....

It’s sad that you, as a MU fan, trashed players busting their arse for MU....saying horrible things about him and other players and don’t have the stones to man up. Really a shame, but everyone has seen how you are.
Good day child, enjoy your VC conference with all your pals.

JJJ, I don’t believe that is accurate with the timing. Official timer in the box score says he made the shot with 4 seconds left.
-
I think the key to our win today was that stretch in the first half where Markus was sitting and Sacar took over and couldn’t be stopped. Markus, however, got us a big basket whenever we needed one in the second half. Nice, gutsy win.
-
The man (Johnson) simply has no skill. Being tall is not a skill. Some people on this board don’t seem to understand this.
-
You may set the record for most posts by a senior in one day. I love it.
-
He is wrong, but I am more sympathetic to his POV because he doesn't derail and grind every thread into the ground.
-
I was impressed with Koby near the end of the game today. He struggled to hit shots in the first half (even had one or two real clunkers), but he stuck with it all game and hit some big FTs in the end of the game. He's had some issues with keeping his composure at times, but I liked his attitude today. This is the kind of maturity I'd love to keep seeing from him.
-
Koby did play well overall. He starts to score more consistently and this team goes to a whole new level. Hope it happens and Markus gets his tourney run. Let’s beat St. John’s first! Go MU!
-
9 assists, one turnover. Clutch free throws. It is one thing to miss 3s, it is another to get to the rack and miss lay ups. He and Sacar both need to do a better job of finishing through contact.
-
And Sacar with his left hand.

I would add, he played the best defense on McClung.
-
Yes...when Markus was on Mac, Mac saw this opportunity...drove hard...and drew fouls on MH. I can’t recall a foul on Koby that Mac drew on an aggressive drive.
-
Outstanding article in the Athletic about the game.
Some Scoopers won't like it, though, as the writer complimented both Markus and Wojo.

These are the kind of games we need to be winning to solidify an invitation to the NCAA tournament.
Great team effort.

He made it interesting late with the crowd pass and diving late at 3 point shooter costing 3 points in crucial moments late, but overall I will take the assists to turnovers all day today. Didn't force too many bad shots which is also important. Just needs to keep playing under control but still aggressive. Controlled aggression and he'll be fine.
-
I would add, he played the best defense on McClung.
I would also add that multiple times late Sacar tried to get Markus to switch on top of key pick and rolls on D when Markus wasn't doing it. A few wide open makes there.
-
Markus has improved defensively but he had no chance with McClung today. Sacar did ok on him but McEwen really did a nice job on D. In fact, very good all-around game from Koby.
Today was a good example of how we have several good role players -- even if those guys aren't always smooth offensively. Koby, Sacar, BB, Theo and Jayce all contributed a lot of good stuff.
-
Jayce knows his role and is getting healthier. His role is to use his 7 foot frame like Otule with two good eyes. Occupy space, bang with bigs, fight for every rebound, get the occasional post up and put back. He isn't a star and doesn't need to be. But he is definitely contributing.

First off, that was a fun, fun game. Games like that are why I love college basketball. It was tense, there weren't a lot of turnovers and we played with a lot of grit, hustle and determination.
Two, Markus was great, but one of things that made me feel good is that we scored with high efficiency when he sat for a stretch for fouls in the first half.
Third, a lot of fouls are called on Theo because he fouls a lot. He gets caught fouling people away from the basket on the hedge a lot. He uses his hands to push off for position a lot. At some we need to stop saying the refs have it in for him.
Finally, as weird as this may sound, I think not having Ed Morrow today was a good thing. He would not have been able to handle those two Georgetown centers with their size and don't think he would have been as effective as Jayce and Theo even playing carefully. I think Theo played better position defense today when he got in foul trouble.
-

I thought two of Theo's fouls today were total BS. I thought the same about two of Jayce's.
I'm tired of guys reputations being used as justification for getting calls. If it's a foul call it. If it isn't don't. That goes for players on offense as well. McClung got several weak calls, while Markus had a three wiped off the scoreboard on another BS call.
I'm glad Marquette won, but with Ed gone the team cannot afford to have Theo and Jayce getting unearned fouls. Especially against the better teams in the conference. Those calls could have very easily cost Marquette the Georgetown game.

Amen!!!
Ban them both.
Sadly, scoop brags about its lack of moderation. They want scintillating dialog like those guys post. Perpetually stuck in middle school.

Do you just "despise" any player on an opposing team that is good? I've watched many G town games this year. I've not seen anything that I consider inappropriate or punkish. The kid busts his ass and seems like a good representative of their program. Perhaps reconsider your views.
-
Very enjoyable game.
Markus was once again awesome.
It felt to me like the first time MU was able to impose their game plan and force the opponents to try to react.
Running a few plays for the bigs really helps the overall offense. Nice to see this and great to see them execute.
What really bothers me is the random officiating. I really felt like 2/3 of the fouls called (both ways, by the way) were totally random. The same exact thing was not a foul on previous and subsequent possessions. That gave the game kind of a video game feel where random stuff just happens out of the blue and now you have to deal with it. Maybe that's the future of college basketball. Other games have felt that way this year, but this one had to be the worst.
Koby played great D.
Not doubling their bigs was a tough call but it worked.
2 bigs really doesn't bother me. It seemed to me that the whole team forced things when Ed was in the game.
Great win.

He feels like a cut rate Devendorf to me. Some players just rub you the wrong way.
-
One of the Jayce fouls (3rd?) was a total make up call for a Yurtseven foul immediately before that. What do you expect from a James Breeding crew?

I'll try to defend Tower a bit here. Some of your scolding phrases which are key: "despise" (your quotes); "I consider"; "seems like". All opinions--just like Tower.
As fans, it is fun to root against an opposing player, and designate a particular one a punk. Whether it is McClung, Gillespie, any No Dick player, and almost any Wisconsin player, and of course that all time punk, Diefendorker from Syracuse. Point is, there is nothing wrong with having a designated punk on any opponents, especially our big time rivals. Adds to our enthusiasm to win. After all, this is just college basketball.
-
Christ you are toxic.
Dont believe you should slander the Lord like that.

Depising someone because they play on a different team is probably not consistent with the values of Marquette University.

Well, he’s white, a guard, an opponent and a pretty good scorer. So there’s that. High effort guy, so there’s that, too. But I don’t see the dirty player aspect that Devendorf brought. I’d take him on my team.

Perfectly summarized. I’d take him in a heartbeat on MU too.

That drop step and basket McClung had late off a scramble was a great move. He’s very skilled
-
Very solid analysis.
Yep.
In my opinion some people have Theo foul fatigue (rightly so) and don't want to keep blaming Theo and go after the refs. Now every game and every foul is different and needs to be treated as such for accuracy. But fouls are fouls. Jayce had a text book example when entry pass into lane, he was not able to keep Georgetown big out of lane. So two hands on back on catch. That is a foul, easy call.
Moving your feet more, playing with your lower half more, trying to keep opposingbigs out of lane without fouling.
Also, perimeter screens. Set the screen without fouling. If it is not successful, that is better than foul trouble. And, there is little need to foul a mid range big jumper.
Jayce had 9 and 8 in 22 minutes or so. He had somw D challenges at times. Theo needs to avoid early foul trouble and get into some rythm. He had a nice catch and seal basket. A little more O is nice. But if he can be what he was on Nova game would be great. Rim protector without fouling and rebounder double digit.

Player stats yesterday don’t tell story of a great team win yesterday. Key contributions from a lot of guys in clutch spots, or they don’t win.
Guys like Johnson and McEwen looking much more comfortable and relaxed in their roles. McEwen’s scoring has been very disappointing, but 9 assists, 1 turnover yesterday was very impressive. Hopefully he’ll find some semblance of consistency with his shot eventually. Until then, he certainly can impact games other ways.
Keep building on these last two wins.

What really bothers me is the random officiating. I really felt like 2/3 of the fouls called (both ways, by the way) were totally random. The same exact thing was not a foul on previous and subsequent possessions.
The only one I really felt that way about was the moving screen on Jayce -- who did the exact same thing every big, including Jayce, had done all game long. Why the ref felt like calling it there, I don't know.
Bottom line: A good team overcomes less-than-stellar officiating. No ref forced Markus to miss 4 FTs, Koby to air-mail a pass, Sacar to miss a wide-open 3, etc, etc, etc. The great news is our guys overcame their own mistakes (didn't make that many of them, really), a game Georgetown team, and, yes, not the best officiating to score an important, well-deserved road victory.

That's two games in a row in which our Warriors played darn well for darn near an entire game. We are getting better.
I'm excited about the rest of the season. That doesn't mean all the games will be perfect or easy. Folks need to look around the Big East, and look around all of college basketball. Any win is a good win, and few (if any) losses are "tragic."
We Are Marquette!

My wife and I were at the game and our guys really earned this win. The Hoya crowd went totally bonkers when they tied late in the game. No way that does not work on a team, no matter how many times they have experienced it. Kudos to Gtown for a good game and making our guys prove themselves. It's good for us in the long run.
We were fortunate to have 6 MU fans right in front of us and 3 more behind us a few rows and the comraderie was great! We ranged from '03 and '04 grads up to '60s grads behind us. Lots of high fiving with other MU fans in the corridors afterwards. MU82 was supposed to be stopping by to say hello at halftime but he was a no show. ;D

Depising someone because they play on a different team is probably not consistent with the values of Marquette University.
So, I am not perfect. Loathe Powell, loathed the collection of guards on last year's SJU team. Martin from Butler. Almost anybody who played for Huggins. Having said that, I will never wish an injury on an opponent. I just want Marquette to whup them.
-
The refshow started when Breeding decided he needed to prove his alpha status and gave the MU bench a warning just minutes into the game. He quickly followed this up with calling Markus for an (awful) offensive foul on a 3 attempt. I believe he was still demonstrating that he's the top dog at that point as well.

In all fairness, there are some guys that you just want to punch in the face. Wojo was like that for me when he played for Duke. Other teams’ fans certainly had Rowsey on their list. McClung falls into this category for me. With that said, I would love that guy if he was playing for Marquette.

When teams play 5 out like Nova, and drive and dish or drive and try to score....this is when Theo excels. Coming over from the weak side or from space to block a shot is his game. One on one in the post against a capable big..Theo is foul prone. So, to say he needs to be like he was in the Nova game aint gonna happen against most teams.

When it comes to buying a round, 82 will be MIA. All talk, no Viagra.

Re: No. 10 - there is hope. Loved not making the same mistake again.

He feels like a cut rate Devendorf to me. Some players just rub you the wrong way.
He has a very punchable face

I'm a big optimist, but I admit that when Jayce got #4 with 11-something left, I turned to the guy next to me and said, "Crap, we are so screwed."
Nice work by the bigs to make it through till the end.

First off, I think it may help that the bigs now have to be conscious of committing fouls as your last sentence points out. But, if I recall, I don't think a single foul by Theo or Jayce was protecting the rim yesterday. That can't happen.
Second, I'd like to see Wojo put on the spot and see what he can do if both guys foul out. Does he consider that possibility during practices? Does he ever have Cain and Bailey on the floor at the same time without a big during practice?
Wojo has not shown in 5 years that he can coach "outside the box". Does he have to even consider that now?

Theo came back in with 4 at the 8:03 mark or so and I asked my wife "how long until he fouls out?" Without missing a beat she said "One minute." I can't believe he lasted until the end, though it did mean some soft defending on Yurtseven at times.

Do you really believe that with TJ and JJ rep for fouling that coaches with a few more years in the business than us have not this under consideration. I thinks that very remote.
I think the more intriguing question is how we (the fans) would handle the line up when this happens as compared to what the coaches do..

There was also a couple of shaky screens set by them that were not called. I don't think they get an unfair whistle. The second foul on Johnson, where Yurtseven caught a ball in the middle of the lane with Johnson behind him, was iffy. But other than that, I really thought the fouls were fouls.

This kinda seems to be an unfair whistle and definitely not a foul.

That whole thread just makes me mad. I could even let the Bailey one slide considering situation and he was reaching forward toward Mac. But the paint fouls (and Markus 3) yesterday were atrocious
-
That was the one that blew my mind. Yurtseven is going shoulder to shoulder with Theo as he starts his movement. The gets his right arm up with his elbow by his side to protect against the bump. Does not extend his arm at all. Foul.

that was nasty, but markus handled it like a leader. he knew what was going on. takes a lot of character to let that one go

Yeah, the camera focused on Markus clapping at the call. The look on his face was pure focus and determination.

Sorry about that, Snoop. I was downstairs and it would have been too much hassle to work through the crowd and get up to you and then back down for the second half. We shoulda traded phoners via PM so I could have texted you.
Enjoyed the game as much as you did. Mostly fellow Warriors around me, but we also had some fun interactions with a few Hoyas.

I've been known to buy a round or 2 (or even 3) ... but not at a sporting event when they cost $855 apiece! I won't even buy them for myself there.
And leave my blue pills outta this, please.

Maybe we need to start recruiting babyface big men. I definitely think Theo suffers from looking bigger, stronger, and tougher than anyone else on the court. Can we find a 7-foot BJ Armstrong look-alike?

We had one who graduated just last year.

Hey, no problem. That's why I added the smiley face. I figured you were opposite us as where most of the Marquette contingent was and yeah, it's really difficult to get around during half time and back to your seat before the 2nd half begins. We had a really pleasant Hoya fan near us who smiled and congratulated us on the win (as if we had anything to do with it!). Unfortunately I had another Hoya fan next to me who was an obnoxious, foul-mouthed drunk. I absolutely loved seeing his ugly expression when they went down. I have found the Hoya fans as a group (but not this a hole) as really good fans.

Had a lot of fun with the Hoya fans near us. We Marquetters got awfully quiet when the 7-point lead was quickly blown, but the opposite happened over the last couple of minutes. That great play Wojo ran to get Markus that great 3-pointer really shut 'em up!!

I hate that I have to agree with this, but I think its right. I, along with most here, really like Ed and wish he was still with the team, but its hard to envision how he could see the court more. He's not big enough to really bang with true 5's, and even though he's certainly athletic in his own way, when you watch him play, he doesn't play "long" if that makes any sense? Most "athletic" 6'7" guys look like they can jump out of the gym, but Ed's physical style trades a lot of that foot speed and length for strength. Which is cool as hell, but what is the type of matchup for Ed where you think "this is a great matchup for us"? True bigs can go over him, whereas other 6'7" wings can go around him. And he doesn't give you enough consistent offense to make any of that tradeoff worth giving him minutes.
