Grade the players & coach
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:18:45 AM »
Now that we're a few days removed from the frustration of losing in the BET and missing out on the NIT, I thought this might be interesting. I expect a wide variance in grades for a few players. I listed all the players who appeared in a game (except Dylan Flood) and Buzz Williams, and you can assign each of them a grade. I'll link the results or post them as text periodically.

So apparently you can leave a response blank - it's already been done for JJJ. So if don't think you can assign a grade to a player, you can just leave it empty.

That was me. Not enough info to grade. I give him an inc.

With 49 responses, here's what it looks like, from best to worst (Buzz separate):

Player    A  B  C  D  F  Inc  "GPA"
Burton   19 26  4  0  0  0    3.31
Gardner  13 34  2  0  0  0    3.22
Mayo      8 37  3  1  0  0    3.06
Otule     0 23 20  6  0  0    2.35
Dawson    0 17 28  2  0  2    2.32
Thomas    4 13 26  6  0  0    2.31
J Wilson  0  2 27 18  2  0    1.59
Johnson   0  1 17 13  1  17   1.56
Taylor    0  0 25 18  2  4    1.51
D Wilson  0  2 14 21 12  0    1.12
Anderson  0  0 10 28 11  0    0.98

Buzz      2  6 20 16  5  0    1.67

I can't really say I'm surprised by any of this. Lots of mediocre scores from a team that had a mediocre year. I just thought this would be an interesting way to get a summary of fellow scoopers opinions on how individuals performed without turning it into a shouting match. (Boring for a message board, I know, but we already have plenty of those threads...)

Big drop off from Jake to Jamil. Seems about right. I personally didnt give anybody an A or an F. An A to me is a Jimmy, DJO, Jae and Vander type year. F to means you produced much, much lower then expected. Jamil was the closes to that category.

I see four distinct groups:

The Good
Burton
Gardner
Mayo

The Average
Otule
Dawson
Thomas

The Bad
J Wilson
Johnson
Taylor

The Ugly
D Wilson
Anderson
TAMU

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

I only gave two A's and did not dole out a single F.  I think with college kids who are trying the only thing that would warrant an F is being dismissed from the team.

Gardner and Burton received A's.
Mayo and Otule received B's
Thomas (ceiling), Jamil (underachieved but team is worse without him), Johnson (limited), Dawson (admirable in light of what his minutes were expected to be prior to Du Wilson red shirt), Taylor (lagging injury?) received C's
Derrick (D+) and Anderson (D-) and Buzz got my D's

Are we supposed to grade only based on stats, performance this season? Or based on performance relative to expectations coming in?

A is pretty high for any score on this team, neither Gardner or Burton have an A average on the Defensive end (C probably), maybe on the Offensive end.

The second most efficient scorer in the conference behind McDermott who was limited in minutes and in touches because of poor play around him deserves an A in my book all day.  Burton, while he had a few growing pains, was a huge bright spot on this years team and for the future and warranted the other A in my book.  Plus, they both snagged all conference honors while each played less minutes than they should have seen.

I never really specified how to grade. It looks like most people did it relative to their expectations, but it's really an entirely subjective system.

There's a link to the results below. Some interesting stuff in there... most notably someone gave every player an A, while giving Buzz a D.

I did it based on how they performed compared to my expectations.  Grading it that way, I don't see how anybody would deserve a lower grade than Jamil, with Juan a distant second.

I assume this is a Team building exercise? Think most know where they stand so no point codifying it.

I have separated team building from coaching. I would give Buzz for this team a C or maybe even lower in team building. However, given the team he built, I would give him a A in winning 17 games with it.
