Title: Post game interviews
Post by: rocky_warrior on November 05, 2006, 09:43:59 PM
This was from Wesley Matthews, Crean coming next...

- Priorities for game were to get better. They knew not to take CS lightly because they would bring their best game and MU had to too

- TOs were going to be a focus tomorrow, and the number of FTS that Strich got was not good.

- David Cubillan had a good game, didn't force, stepped up showed he could play.  He will get a bigger test when the opposition talent level improves.  He practices like he plays, and brings it every day

- Trend is a very good athletic player., Gets to the bucket well, is "Freakishly Athletic" (direct quote).  He can get to the basket, and can elevate over defenders.  Has a great mid-range and can hit the three too.

- Hayward is behind, but is working very hard to get back.  Great rebounder, great kid.  Always asking questions and wants to learn.  Wants to get better and help team.  Talked about his (WMs) frosh year and how there's so much to learn and it's hard to take it to the game situation.

I'm still a bit confused about the whole prep school thing.  Was Hayward originally in the same class as DJ, JM and DM?  Did he do four years of high school, and then a year of prep?

Thanks.

Oh yes I did forget to mention in the other thread but we fouled way too much.  CS was in the double bonus early in both halves.  It defeats the purpose of playing aggressive defense if we let them get free throws at will.

I was disappointed we missed on Stemler and thought that we settled on Trend.  I am glad to see that I was wrong with that assessment.

Tom Crean Comments:

- A lot of things to critique.  Need to break down tape and see where momentum changed. (he talked fast here, I didn't get much)

- On David:  Would like to get 25 minutes out of him every night.  He brought energy.  Bottom line tonight was to play with energy.  Teams that can play with energy consistently win close games.  MU needs to learn how to do that.

- Kansas State - worked out great.  Asked a few guys to do it, Huggins was the one that jumped on it.  Liked the road aspect, but may do it at MU next year.  Did it by possessions, and kept score that way (10 possessions each - make or miss).  Lots of fast moving situations to work through.  Intensity was great.  Ability to coach in-between.  Don't know about doing it twice each year - may come down to financials.  Tonight was good too, good to get in building in front of fans.

- Stritch was good. Denny is a great coach.  Guards dealt with pressure well.  Will be a good team, fortunate that they were an excellent team.

- Hayward behind by missing the preseason.  MU helped him through all of the "not cleared" situation, but the practice time, teaching time, conditioning were missed.  There are high expectations, and he will eventually be a real contributor to this program (this season).

- MU needs tp lead the way with energy.  Need to talk on defense - talking was very average tonight.  CS took away alleys well tonight.  Game got very fast in second half.  JM made some nice shots tonight, Ooze could have done more, but he'll be there.

- Trend will be difficult to redshirt this year.  Maybe next year.  Came in at 165, low 170s now.  He's athletic, but new and doesn't know what's expected of him yet.  Recruited him without recruiting him - always had great games when they were looking at other players.  He's got "something" - will be a star of the games some nights.  Excited to get him some playing time.

- Most fans at an exhibition game so far.  Sold over 4000 student tickets, ran out and had to get some from another sections.
