Title: Favorite party houses at MU
Post by: ZiggysFryBoy on February 14, 2013, 03:48:07 PM
spinning off of the closed bar topic and seeing Lighthouse's post about their house being listed as a drinking establishment, what were some of the great party houses?

1996-2000

Warrior House 19th and Kilbourn
Phi Kaps muddy basement, complete with Colt 45 in cans
2020 Clybourn
Delta Chi the old house
Pirate House 22nd & Michigan

I know I'm missing a few more on the eastern end of campus.

Funny how I went to MU the same years 1996-2001 and I only have recollection of two of those locations (2020 Clybourn, Warrior House/19th and Kilbourn).
How about:
-The Tool Box (14th St north of Kilbourn)
-Blue/Red/Grey/Black Door Row Houses (13th St between Kilbourn and State)
-Bath House (1435 Kilbourn... shared back yard w/ some Engineering frat)- we used to a 4th floor roof patio before Cedar Square properties rehabbed it.
-The Shady House (between 19th and 20th and Kilbourn)

What I realize is that every generation/class has different names for what some of the houses are called.  For example... The Rugby house existed at 4 different places in 4 years (which is good because it keeps Public Safety off our ass temporarily).
What houses names have stood the test of time?

Ones I remember from the early 80's-Lighthouse, Budhouse, Pleasure Palace, Yellow House, Blue House and the Row Houses.  It doesn't sound like any of them held up.  I know the Lighthouse went the way of a parking lot....

I attended from 95-00. The best party houses at the time were the Monkey Cage on 18th and Kilbourn and the basement parties at Maryland Courts.

I might have lived in the Pirate House in 87-88.    Next door to a frat, the name of which escapes me.

How about best/worst landlord:

Worst:

Chris Ganos (all his houses had red doors).  When we moved into our place at 18th and the alley before State junior year, the heat was not turned on because the gas company wouldn't to it.  Chris:   "no worry guys- I just turn it on."

guy who owned Dahmer's place (just on principle)

Best:

Guy who owned the Red House (I think his name was Mike- we called him Soupy - don't ask) where we lived senior year (5 units for six or seven people, only one for boys on the ground floor; our place was a dive, but the girls all had nice places)

Richie and Pauly

Hegarty

And then there was that woman - Starr?  she owned Strack and/or the Rowhouses?

Lived in the original Strack - Apartment Z.  Apartments were good, rents were reasonable, but I got charged for a bunch of nail holes I didn't even put in the walls because the guys before us had used toothpaste to spackle them, and it fell out.

I don't recall an exact name or address at 19th & Kilbourn (Warrior house?) but I found it ironic that upon driving past with my daughter while announcing that I'd been to TONS of parties at that particular property 30 years ago her response was 'Me too!'.  Well played honey.

Legs, too funny.

Rented from Ms. Starr one year and Ganos one year.  Couple of funny stories about both places.....

In the Ms Starr house (her name was Brenda), one night some one was working the window in the unit next to ours, which was rented by girls. The window was next to my bedroom window.  Turns out it was Crazy Mary's window.  Yes that Crazy Mary. Yes, the one who got kicked out of Dental school for dancing at Ricky's on amateur  night.  Cops called.  Big too do.  Turns out, it was someone looking for some "oral hygiene" from Mary.

At our 20th, 3 of us, plus our non MU wives, drove by the Swamp, and decided to go in...door was open.  Told a student that we lived there back in the day.  He gave us a full tour of the living accommodations on the first floor and the basement. Pretty sure, we never went to the basement when we were there for hygienic reasons. Gotta hand it to Ganos for his creativity.  After that, we were escorted to the second floor, where a party was going on.  We were treated like royalty.  One of the second floor residents and pulled out his.....keg of Lakeisde (you thought I was going to say bong) that he was saving for later in the night.  We swilled beer, did beer bongs with the youngsters, and were treated like rock stars by our now fellow MU alum.

Back to the Ms. Starr house.  A gal I knew back in the day, sent me an e-mail this fall of the house her son was moving into.  It was "my" Ms. Starr house.  I'm guessin' that her son has no idea that his mom spent a few...... ;)

I find it amazing that many of the houses still exist and still have the same reputations.

Given the cleaning habits of most of the landlord's, its probaly a good thing that he doesn't know that some of his mom and Chili's DNA probably is still imbedded in a nook and cranny or two of his room.

Crazy Mary- holy cr@p!!

Most creative Ganos thing was our basement - go down the stairs, walk over an old dirt floor to a "room" he placed on a thin slab of concrete with a toilet that didn't work.  Got one more tenant that way.

ZFB spent his time at the frat houses? I suppose that makes sense.

When I go back to Campus Town and walk into the old apartments I usually tell the current residents some of the things we did in there back in the day. Probably shouldn't.

I think I remember some pretty good times in the renee row courtyard

During my time at MU (98-02), I don't think I knew the name of any on-campus house. Did they even go by names then? As underclassmen, we'd just hear that there was a party at such-and-such address and we'd go.

The tool box is the only house with a name I remember.

19th and Kilbourn was usually a safe bet.

Could be. I had my older brother's ID so we spent a lot of time partying in Schroeder. No need to go out chasing girls when a 30-pack of Miller Lite will bring them literally to your bedroom  ;)

Red door with a dirt floor basement at 18th and the alley south of state (across from the basketball courts on the school playground).  Chris Ganos special (he probably had other dirt floor basements).

Lived in a Chris Ganos special right across the alley from the place you are talking about on 17th and the alley just south of State.  I am pretty sure all of the houses he owned had red doors.

Attended '04-'08.

Red Door was huge. Also the Pirate House on the cul de sac on 17th (since been demolished for a new apartment building called The Eageles Nest), it was set back from the street....with a huge lawn in front. Many parties were also held in the Renee Row courtyard every weekend.

It's crazy how it can change from year to year.  When I was an underclassman it was the lax house 533 n 17th, but then when I became an upper classman that house became like a foreign exchange student house.

Me and three buds lived in a major dive at 24th and Wells our junior year (80-81). It was dirt cheap but we would have gone broke if we had to pay a penny per cockroach. We once went to the landlord's office to confront him about the conditions; we left 5 minutes later having apologized to him for some reason. He was a fast-talking lawyer who knew how to deal with dopey students.

Yeah thats Tammy. She didn't do anything for us when we were there. Just make sure you pick a room away from the shower. God that place was awful. Great guys though. Be sure to get screen windows if you can.

My mom who was a Chicago paramedic said that it was one of the worst houses she's seen. And this is someone who has been in the robert taylor homes and the finest establishments that the west and south side of Chicago have to offer.

Prob didn't help my case that every time she did come in there was trash, beer cans, holes in the wall.

I won't make a joke (though there's one there to make), but I bet your mom never saw a house as bad as the Lighthouse before we forced the landlord to clean it up.  We had mice, roaches and rats.  But once it got cleaned up, it became one of the top 10 buildings on campus in 1984 ( so said the yearbook).  Some of the mice/rat stories are hilarious.   That could be another thread by itself that I'm sure we could all come up with hilarious stories about our MU houses and how bad the living conditions were (at least at times).

Lived at 939 N. 17th St.  Looked at it on google maps and got to see that there are bars on all the windows now.  Pretty funny because one night we are all sitting in the living room watching TV.  About an hour later my roommate goes to his far back bedroom and his window/screen is busted out and his ghetto blaster and TV from his room are gone.  We were obviously oblivious to any noise.

I think the (front door) address of the gray house with the red door was 930 N 18th. In 1968-69 I lived in back/side of that house - our address was 932 and the entrance was on the northeast side. Had several friends who lived across the alley in those string of apartments on 17th.

I was there 04-08.  Renee row was huge when I was there, had buddies that rented the house with the big deck on Michigan and that place was great, then apartment 305 in he building across from the Cedar Square apartments on 15th.  I actually lived in 1435 on the 3rd floor for a year and part of the rugby team lived on the first floor.  Awesome guys and good times had by all.  That house was a rat hole.  The summer we moved out they began renovating it to become a sorority house and we saw a lot of guys in hazmat suits going in and out during that process, we assume it was asbestos.
