Podcast recommendations needed
« on: August 03, 2015, 09:54:30 PM »
Packing up the old family truckster next week and driving the 12ish hours to CO.  Anyone have good podcast recommendations (other than the obvious totally awesome but not frequent enough Cracked Sidewalks)?

I only do 3 podcasts on a regular basis and want a bit of a change to fend off the desire to yell "i will turn this car around".  For reference the 3 i listen to are:
1) Doug loves movies - i'm a music guy not a movie guy but this is a VERY entertaining listen
2) Penn's Sunday School - if you can get past the self indulgence it's a good listen.  He's both an atheist and a libertarian.....something for every Scooper to hate.
3) Kevin Pollack's chat show - just a really good interviewer

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Marc Maron WTF
Tim Ferriss Podcast
The Lowe Post
This American List
Dan Carlin - Hardcore History
Serial - If kids are old enough

Didn't see any other threads for non-MU podcasts, but one to check out would be How I Built This, which goes interviews entrepreneurs and talks about how they built their companies.  Really good listen.

The reason I'm posting this now is the episode released this morning was with Marquette alum Bobby Trussell who started Tempur-Pedic.

Not a family listen, but something to start listening on your own is Pardon My Take.

Eye on College Basketball is solid.  The Lowe Post is good.

I second Hardcore History. Would also throw in "Revolutions Podcast" (particularly the American Revolution season) especially if the kids are in American History class.

Tim Ferriss has interesting interviews but content can get pretty blue and the subjects are wildly varied so you kind of have to pick and choose the episodes that interest you.

I enjoyed "American Innovations" (season 1 is about the research/discovery of DNA, season 2 is about nuclear energy).

If you feel like getting your military history and testosterone on, "Jocko Podcast" is good.

Other solid history podcasts are "The Fall of Rome" and "Tides of History."

And for misc interesting things, "Damn Interesting."

Political:

Deconstructed with Mehdi Hasan. He does takedowns on both sides.

Stay Tuned with Preet. Former SDNY attorney is a great interviewer.

Comedy:

My Dad Wrote a Porno. Only for adult children, but hilarious. It's just what the title says, the main narrator's dad wrote erotic fiction (very poorly) and he reads a chapter a week, joined by a couple friends to add commentary.

Drama:

Wolverine, The Long Night. If you're a Marvel fan, this is an exciting, fun fictional Wolverine story told through the eyes of two special agents investigating murders that may have been done by Logan.

The first season of Crimetown was fantastic (and features a Marquette connection).
Revisionist History (Malcolm Gladwell's podcast)

To piggy back, The RFK Tapes (from the producers of Crimetown) and Doctor Death (producers of Dirty John) are also really good.

I loved and hated the RFK Tapes.
It was really well reported and did a great job of capturing the the nation's mood at the time and the interesting characters surrounding the assassination. But it was ultimately kind of disappointing because not for a second did I believe the conspiracy theorists might be on to something, so there was never really any tension or feeling that it was going to end any differently than it did.

Doctor Death was terrifying and makes me glad I don't live in Texas.

Other podcasts I'm a big fan of:
- 30 for 30 - they have original podcast episodes, as well as some convos about the tv episodes
- Planet Money - take an economics look at any and all things - favorite example is why is milk in the back of the store
- Criminal - podcast on anything involving crime, really well done - probably my favorite - could be anything from a gruesome murder mystery, to interviewing a K-9 police handler, to a story about stolen bourbon
- Science Vs - Takes a look at interesting topics and dives into scientific studies on them - the host interjects a lot of punny humor into it
- American Fiasco - interesting deep dive into the 1998 Men's World Cup team done by one of the Men In Blazers guys
- Hidden Brain - dives into sociologic topics and how the brain works - sometimes the host gets a bit too liberal for my liking, but a great way to challenge the way I think
- So to Speak - a free speech podcast that has very interesting conversations on the impacts of free speech

My podcast priority looks like this:

The Fried Egg - Periodic golf architecture and general discussion
No Laying Up - Periodic general golf discussion, lots of good interviews, especially web.com and lower guys
The Shotgun Start - Monday, Wednesday, Friday general hot topic golf discussion. Big fan.
Pardon My Take - See others recommendation.
I'm Fat Podcast - Random distributed podcast from two 670 The Score producers about food, fat issues and the like. Better than any actual 670 programming.
Club Pro Guy Podcast - Satire based interview of low level old timers by a 'Club Pro' out of Kansas City. Hilarious.
Golf WRX Two Guys Talking Golf - Very equipment heavy conversations.
The Clubhouse with Shane Bacon - Bacon talking golf with high end people. Buck, Bruce Cupcake, etc.

If you're following the golf theme, you're correct. Don't ever, ever bother listening to Barstool's Foreplay podcast. It's the worst.

Have to say, for worst podcasts, Big East Coast Podcast is up there. I still listen because of the topic, but they could really use some post-recording editing. The one guy is basically just a yes man (except when talking about the Death Penalty for Louisville) and they spend more time saying "uhh" and "umm" between dead air while looking up Pomeroy stats than anyone should be allowed.

I really enjoyed Slow Burn.  The first season (on Watergate) was excellent, though the second season (on the Clinton-Lewinsky) scandal was a little lackluster in comparison.

Alpha Order:

American History Tellers (six episodes on each topic; so far it's been Cold War, Prohibition, Age Of Jackson, et al)

Global News (BBC) (twice a day 30 minute news recap)

Constitutional (Wash Post) (each show tackles a different Amendment)

Inside Europe (Deutsche Welle) (weekly 50 minute show on European news)

Revisionist History (echo Pakuni with this)

The World In Words (PRI) (once or twice a month on language and how it came to be)

Unexplained (self explanatory title, it's about the spooky and eery events that have no explanation)

It was a tough follow up. What I really appreciated was that Nayfakh was pretty clearly a Clinton supporter as a kid that had to reassess his feelings through the reporting he did.

If you were a wrestling fan in the 90's the Steve Austin Podcast is gold.  Especially when he has an old attitude era wrestler on.  The two will shoot the crap telling old stories from backstage and on the road.

Ball and Chain - Former MU Warrior Steve Rushin and his wife Rebecca Lobo's weekly podcast.  I'm probably right in their core demographic (40's, suburban, kids who played sports, love basketball...). Steve throws in a Marquette mention occasionally.  Even their producer, "Deny with one N" is a recent MU grad.  Rebecca talks a lot about things relating to her ESPN announcing job.  The funniest parts are when they talk about normal life things that come up.

In no particular order:

  • Serial - I really liked the first season; season 2 was so-so; season 3 so far is interesting, but a little disturbing (especially for a Clevelander who has dealt with some of the people on it).
  • The Joe Rogan Experience - Totally depends on who he's talking to, but some of them are really good.
  • ID10T with Chris Hardwick - Ditto.
  • The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe - Very short weekly in the tradition of Paul Harvey; I revisit it every month or two and spend 30-45 minutes catching up; Mike Rowe is really high on my "famous people I'd love to grab a beer with."
  • The Good Place - If you like the TV show, it's great; it also gives a surprising amount of insight into how a half-hour television show gets made from concept through editing with interviews from people in all departments (writing, casting, set design, props, costume, editing, etc.)
  • The Gladiator - Just started listening to this Boston Globe podcast about Aaron Hernandez; so far, it's pretty interesting.
  • Homecoming - A pretty well done fiction podcast.
  • Limetown - Ditto.
  • Penn's Sunday School - I enjoyed this podcast with Penn Gillette for quite a while; eventually his shtick wears thin and I have to take a break from it.
  • WTF with Marc Maron - Ditto.
  • You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes - Ditto.
  • Hey, Do You Remember - Three friends re-watch and discuss movies from the 80s to see how they hold up.  Honestly, they're pretty cheesy, but depending on what film they're discussing, I'll tune in.
Like a lot of similar podcasts, once you get to "know" the hosts, you get pulled in.
  • Up and Vanished - an interesting true crime podcast about a disappearance in small-town Georgia.  Haven't listened to season 2...will have to add that.
  • Crimetown - An interesting look into organized crime/politics in Providence.

Related Question:  Which app do you use for listening?

I have used Stitcher and the Apple embedded app, and for the last couple of years I have been using Overcast.

Many of my favorite listed above, including PMT, Slow Burn and Revisionist History.

For basketball, of those not mentioned above and not MU related, I recently started listening to and enjoy Three Man Weave.

Slate Money reliably drops on Saturday very early morning in time for walking the dog.

Many Ringer podcasts, with favorites being The Watch and Rewatchables.

Longform has interviews with interesting journalists/writers.

The Examen with Fr. Jim Martin, S.J., is a reflective way to end the day.

I'll spare you my political podcasts, and appreciate that others have mostly done the same!

Two additional podcasts I've recently been listening to that I haven't seen mentioned:
American Scandal - Season 1 was just released and focuses on Balco/Steroids. Presents a good recount of what went down.

Business Wars - Several seasons are already out.  Entertaining perspective of one company battling with another (EGL Southwest vs American).

Almost all of these are not for kids and cover a really wide variety of topics. Obviously, the guests play a large role but the formats for most of these have lead me to additional content and podcasts.

Comedy
Kill Tony - Open Mic format hosted live from The Comedy Store by Tony Hinchcliffe
Legion of Skanks - Louis J Gomez, Big Jay Okerson and Dave Smith
The Adam and Dr. Drew Show - great if you listened to Loveline back in the day
The Church of What's Happening - Joey Coco Diaz and Lee Syatt
Fitzdog Radio
Norm Macdonald Live - similar to his new show on Netflix
Bertcast - I am the machine
The Chip Chipperson Podacast - Maybe Jim Norton's best character
Jeremiah Wonders - Jeremiah Watkins hosts w/ great guests
The Jeselnik & Rosenthal Vanity Project - not quite as good as the Rosenthal & Jeselnik Vanity Project (RJVP) from 2 years ago, but still pretty funny take on the NFL

Pop Culture
The Adam Carolla Show - Interesting guests and fun for fans that used to listen to Loveline
The Rubin Report
The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast - Now on Patreon
The Joe Rogan Experience

Politics
Part of the Problem - Dave Smith covers Anarcho Capitalist & Libertarian ideas w/ Robbie the fire Bernstein
The Tom Woods Show - Libertarian topics
Reasonable Doubt - Adam Carolla, Mark Garagos take on legal topics, pop culture and America today
Unregistered with Thaddeus Russel - Anarcho topics with different guests and perspectives
Reason Podcast - Libertarian topics
Lions of Liberty - Libertarian topics - 3 different episodes per week with 3 different hosts. They take turns and offer different perspectives on new topics

Related Question:  Which app do you use for listening?

I had always used the Apple app until with one of their "updates" they inexplicably eliminated the ability to automatically play multiple episodes of a podcast back to back without user input.  I enjoyed listening to multiple short episodes of a couple podcasts while mowing my lawn.  After the update it was a pain in the a$$ to have to stop the mower, pull my phone out of my pocket, press the next episode and put the phone back in my pocket.  I came across discussion boards of people venting on the issue and many had switched to Overkast.  That is what I've been using from that point on.  I'm not sure if Apple ever got their head out of their...well you know, and "un-updated' that feature.
