Yeah when I was living in Ireland I tried the VPN thing and it was like watching on a flip book. VIP box usually works alright but figured if there was a bar or casino that'd show it I'd just head there.

I am the old guy in the room, but I have followed a lot of MU basketball and Packer games via game cast on ESPN. I guess better than when I would call an 800 number non stop to get updates.

Are sports bars a thing in Malaysia? Should I plan on getting a VPN? Trying to plan a way to watch the Maui invitational games next week.

Where will you be?  Kuala Lampur? - I can't really help with KL.

I was in George Town (Penang) & Johor (over the border from Singapore) the week before left.
Just enjoy the kopi (coffee) in Malaysia.  They were bog on 4 varieties; Kopi-B & Kopi-C, etc.

FWIW, I watched the Marquette Game against Northern Illinois on the FOX Sports App on my phone in India.  It was perfectly timed to be televised in the morning at wakeup.

I’m younger but I remember in the mid 2000s texting an ESPN number and getting score updates before my first smartphone

If you have flown that many miles, why the hell are you in a middle seat?  You certainly have some level of permanent status on a carrier.  I can understand coach, but there is never an excuse for a middle seat short of buying a flight the day of or switching in an emergency.

I have my own opinions on the truly affluent flying coach on business trips, mostly around their value of their own time and comfort, but I don’t need to insult anyone so I’ll keep it to myself.  Though I will say, if you truly have lots of disposable income that you can splurge and you’re regularly flying long haul in economy, you’re doing yourself a disservice health wise over the long run, IMO

Middle seats are often only the option when you buy a few days in advance regardless of status. Thankfully we have a rule for work that we are supposed to buy a week out at least.

Wags

800 number was during my excessive gambling days, many moons ago. I found an old Northwest boarding pass (first class) from ‘93 and had my bets on it. Great memory, but a bad memory.

Flyer
Part of my problem pre pandemic was I often change my return flight home. Buy cheapest dates and adjust longer or shorter when needed, hence some center seats.

As a former degenerate who spent years in retail (‘93-‘00) before any cell phones, getting those sports updates either made me a better employee or a very nervous employee

Good for you. Some very good local retailers, a couple of difficult ones, but better than the big boys we support.

We are friends with a wealthy entrepreneur whose last name most of you would recognize.

He travels on business as if it is his own money - because it is.  He is extremely generous with his friends and his charitable interests, but otherwise, doesn't spend a lot of money on things he considers frivolous.

Recently, he told us that he was on a plane when the pilot came on over the intercom to congratulate him by name for reaching his 3 millionth mile on their loyalty program.  The flight attendants were looking around for him in first class.  He was back in coach - in a middle seat.

Eh, one flight, he got upgraded from the very back of the plane to economy plus....middle seat.  ;D

Once, I was in the back when the FA thanked me for being a million miler. She actually gave me points for being stuck in the back.  Other than a few minutes longer deplaning, seats are the same in economy. Paraphrasing Arthur "I took the points, I'm not crazy."

We’re leaving for Australia on Saturday, United had a crazy offer over the summer (40k one way), so we booked with miles.

The flight from SFO to Brisbane is maybe 30% full. Since I booked with miles, I don’t think I have any chance of us being upgraded to Polaris. However, with economy plus and economy having tons of empty rows, we’re hoping to spread out and each one of us (five total), takes a row to ourselves. I don’t think I’ve ever slept on a row of three seats, should be interesting.

1) Not sure if you’re 1K, but unfortunately you can’t use Plus Points to upgrade a mileage flight, regardless

2) also unfortunately, there are no complimentary upgrades on international flights.  The ONLY exception is if Business is open and economy is full plus a standby list.  In my 50ish international flights over the last decade, this happened to me precisely once, going to Brussels

That being said, a full row is not bad at all. Honestly, for sleeping purposes, I’d rather have a full row in economy plus than premium economy with limited recline.  If you can grab multiple pillows you can to between you and the seat in hard parts, and then you’ll get some solid sleep.  Also use the belts to hold you in like you’re sleeping on a mountain side  :)

We are doing a trip next year where we fly to Sydney, take a cruise up the Great Barrier Reef, fly to Melbourne, stay a few days, fly to Singapore, and then take transpacific cruise to LA, hitting Vietnam, Malaysia, Guam, and Hawaii on the way back, and then flying to Las Vegas.  All in, I think we are spending about $1000 each for airfare.

Last night, we watched a YouTube video of a guy who flew around the world in 80 hours, all on budget airlines.  He used all of the airlines we did for our trip.
Have some patience, FFS.
