Orlando Invitational Tournament Thread
« on: November 23, 2019, 08:53:08 PM »
Looking forward to the Orlando Invitational. There are some solid teams in the tournament. Would be great if we could make it to the final and face Buzz and TAMU.

Made this thread to discuss the various teams and games.

Here is the bracket:

We needed a near-miracle to beat Davidson last time. Don't know if this squad has demonstrated that it has the stuff. They are not a weak opponent. Hoping for the best.

Given how A&M is playing, I wouldn't count on them being in a final.  Decent chance they don't win any games.

Fairfield is part of the field, I'd hope they'd at least win that one.

Hope our guys can get to to the final. It'd be a good accomplishment to beat Davidson and USC. Wouldn't expect to beat #6 Maryland. Expecting 2 wins in any case. Beat KSU and the rest of the cupcakes and I'd say that's an acceptable Non-con.

Feel confident saying you can only have one of those two things.

It will be interesting to see the interaction between Buzz and MU fans.  There was good KO vibes when he was with USC in Maui. Let’s see how this one goes.

The last time we were in this tournament we won two games when I was expecting no wins. One game Carlino scored over 30 points and the next Duane Wilson scored over 30 points.

I suspect we will not win any games in this tournament, if Howard does not put up 30+.

I get that we're all dejected about the lackluster win, but Fairfield is in this tournament. The odds we don't win that game (if it happens) are incredibly slim.

If we lose to Davidson, this tourney could be a real stinker. Huge game.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

North Dakota State is not a cupcake in my book. Top 200 per KenPom. We should win at home but that could be a good game.

It had been over 20yrs since KO left and we'd surpassed his heights plus the program got major. Buzz would be different as he trashed the program and conference, and failed his last year.

O’Neill left trashing the program.   And there wasn’t really that stark of a deference between major and mid major back then. In fact I’m not even sure the term “mid-major” existed.

The difference was O’Neill was a fun dude who had time for everyone. Buzz was a weirdo.

Outside of Fairfield, this whole field is in the Top 100 for T-rank.  Lose to Davidson, beat Fairfield and then play Harvard or A&M won’t be a total killer for our resume.  Of course, beating Davidson, beating USC and playing Maryland will do wonders for the SOS.

Yes. And they would meet in the 7th/8th place game if both teams lost their first two games. Unless Fairfield gets a major upset in their first two games, the only way for TAMU to lose all their games would be to lose to Fairfield.

If this is a close game, I'll be worried. We should be able to beat NDSU very comfortably.

Really? I've never heard anyone say O'Neil was trashing MU on the way out. Stories?

I remember him saying something along the lines of, he wouldn't use his contract to blow his nose.  He was unhappy with how much he was getting paid and wasn't shy about saying so, but that was pretty much it from what I can remember.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I believe he also was concerned about facilities and that Marquette didn’t have what it took to be big time.

Agreed. I feel the exact same about this game vs Davidson as I felt going into last year's Louisville game.

Davidson has had a couple good games this season and a couple real stinkers. The latter surprised me, as they have a veteran team with several good players and an outstanding coach. If we get their best, it will be a VERY tough game. We are more athletic and should control the boards. I just hope we close out on their good shooters and take care of the basketball.
