Title: OT: Randolph Morris
Post by: DegenerateDish on March 21, 2007, 01:15:12 PM
This may have been talked about sometime ago in here, but I find it fascinating that Morris at any time this last season, could have played a game for Kentucky on a Saturday, and been playing in the NBA the same evening.

It's an odd loophole in the NBA/NCAA rules, but if he goes back to school for his senior year, he'll still be a free agent. An NBA team could sign him today for their playoff run if they wanted to. He has all kinds of leverage (not that he's in Durant/Oden's class by any stretch) but I can't think of anyone else that this rule has affected.

Here's an article about him (albeit a few months old):

if you know you'll be a really low draft pick you might tank the workouts on purpose to guarantee you won't be taken.. would nice to be able to have options available at any moment.. OTOH, if you do get signed via free agency there's not necessarily any guaranteed money involved....

it seems like Randolph Morris has been at Kentucky since the mid-90's... hes the Kentucky version of Tom Coverdale at Indiana

I think of Coverdale and Sammy Mejia of DePaul both were freshman the same year.  Amazing since Mejia is still playing and is only considered a junior.

Or eighth year junior Tommy Kleinschmidt at DePaul. . . .

Aren't we all missing the obvious one....Alando Tucker.  UW-Madison.

He actually WAS there forever.

It takes forever to actually get a degree from there.

That is an interesting loophole, that Morris can turn pro whenever he chooses.  If he wanted money now I guess he could try to encourage it, but having a draft pick number attached to his name is probably a better way to get money than hoping a team wants to bid for a player who hasn't played a game in the league yet.

Morris has signed with the Knicks.  What a strange loophole.

Which makes the UK job even more fun. You lose Morris and Perry and the possibility of losing younsters like Jasper and Meeks is there. I'm assuming the fans will only give the new coach one season to ease in and then they expect Final Fours.

Didn't you get the memo from the People's Republic Ziggy? College basketball didn't start until 1994.

I don't know where he was projected to go, but his salary will be the same of the 30th pick this year...I think that was about the same as the 26th last year.
