I guess I'll be the only one on here cheering for them in the national championship game. I have friends and children of friends that went there and have gone on to be successful, outstanding folks.  I could give a rat's a** about Georgia or Alabama.  Good luck Irish!

And I'll expect LW to have his Irish football jersey on that day. I can picture him absolutely driving his wife nuts during the game.  Those are his teammates for God's sake.  And if they happen to win, man up and congratulate him next time you see him.

You're not alone. My dad gave me an ND pennant when I was 5 and started going to games soon after (I know, child abuse!). Really like this year's team.

Really torn.   I enjoyed watching them get humbled for all of those years, but I found myself rooting for them last night.    Probably, the more their fans start babbling, the more I will be rooting for whoever plays them.

I rooted for them also, but the only reason was to see how they do against probably Bama.  Two great defenses will result in a great game.

You're not alone, my wife went to ND so I'll be pulling for the Irish in the national championship. Plus I'm sick of the SEC recent dominance.

Grew up Irish Catholic in Chicago. There was only one College football team to root for as far as my family was concerned.  Went to Marquette and learned to hate Digger and ND basketball. Am now the proud father of two ND grads.  Biggest mistake was not getting them up to see Marquette basketball games when they were in grade school and early high school. The scholarship offers from Marquette would have saved me a lot of money! LOL

The key is to get your kids interested in majors that ND doesn't offer.  That was our strategy.  ;)

Torn as well.   Chicago Irish Catholic blah blah...went to MU, learned to hate 'em (0-6 will do that to you).  Kept hating, until kids went to ND sports camp (would have been nice if MU had overnight camps...).  Son in particular fell under the influence, and is likely to go there (though he threw me and MrsLegs a bone and applied to MU as well).

We had a serious discussion about this when he was around 10 or 11 as I could see this developing, he told me that he would go to ND if he was a football player,  but promised that if he was a basketball player, he would go to Marquette.  Turns out he's a mathlete, do I don't know what that means.

Eff the Irish.   ;D

There were some questionable calls in other games (namely Stanford) but the horrid pass interference call on 4th down against Pitt gave ND that win (the refs ignoring two #2 on the field didn't help either).

Also grew up a good Catholic boy in Chicagoland which made me an ND fan by default. It was actually my top choice for college...and then I took two visits there and absolutely HATED it. Just about everyone I met, from students to admins to faculty, fit the pretentious ND stereotype to a T. I didn't even open my acceptance letter.

Hate the Irish, but hate the SEC even more.  This will be one of the rare times I cheer for Notre Dame.  Not sure how they ended up undefeated, the Luck of the Irish certainly came to play this year.  Besides, I'd rather have a university that at least attempts to do it the right way (yes, they fail at times) than some of the nonsense in the SEC.

As others have said, you won't be alone.  My dad went there and I grew up rooting for ND.  During four years at MU, I learned to hate them in basketball, and still do.  But I've always rooted for the football team.  It's been a fun year.  I certainly don't think they've got the best team in the country, but the defense is very good.  I'm not exactly expecting a win, but if the defense can keep the score down, anything can happen.

Glad this was moved to the Superbar.  Why would we congratulate the Irish?  Should we also congratulate the Badgers on winning their division of the Big Ten?

ND is a good team that had some lucky games.  They would be the seventh best team in the SEC in my opinion.  I hope they get smoked by Georgia or Alabama.

Nobody goes undefeated without a little luck.   Hell, Alabama/Georgia winner is lucky that K-State and Oregon both choked games they had no business losing.     Yup, ND got some breaks, some gifts, some bad calls go their way.   But they took advantage of all of them and they earned it.     Regardless of my feelings for some of their alums, subway alums, and most importantly Digger, this year's team is playing for the National Championship, and not by accident.   So, Kudos, and go to hell.

Because our school doesn't have a football team, might as well pick another Catholic school to root for.

As far as winning the national championship goes, that might have been unlucky for Notre Dame.  I can't help but think ND would have had a better chance of winning the Championship if just one of those two teams would have lost.  Alabama is a tougher match-up than either Oregon or KState would have been (although they're both pretty tough too).

I root for ND because MU doesn't have a team, my older brother went there, and I was introduced to college football with ND.

I have met my fair share of ND tools and elitists.  But I have met some really solid people too.  If you want to talk to some elitist football fans, just venture to the south for a weekend.  If you don't leave hoping to never heard "SEC BABY!" or anything of the like in a southern twang, I would be shocked.

Bottomline, their fans may be tough to deal with (I think every Packer fan should look yourself in the mirror before talking about annoying fanbases) but the university does stand for good morals and an education.

I find myself in the Guns N Ammo camp on ND football.

There fanbase as a whole is insufferable, but some of my best friends went there.

They're better than most about at least trying to do it the right way, but they'll remind you of it ad nauseum.

I don't like the "Touchdown Jesus" stuff, but I don't like the anti Catholic bigotry of some of their detractors either.

Bottom line:by any measuable metric I should root for an ND win (especially over an Alabama or a Georgia) - but my heart won't be in it.

Not sure the "class" argument has a leg to stand on when the program's negligence led to a kid's death.

HA!  You really think this person's dislike of ND stems from safety policies?  Please.

Some people must live perfect lives.  If everyone judged based on a singular action or failure of action, then you wouldn't like anyone.  PTM, Northwestern had a kid die on the practice field in 2001, you don't seem to care.  A bit two-faced, but that doesn't surprise me.

IMO, since the University has admitted its mistake, and the family has accepted their apology and whatever came with that, who are we to continuously pick at the scab?  In many ways the family's reaction has been the model of Christian forgiveness.  But we get to keep bringing it up?

Not saying it didn't happen, I may have missed it, but did Notre Dame admit wrong doing?  Last I remember, their AD was saying they had no idea it was going to be windy that day, despite everyone in the Midwest knowing damn well it was going to be historically windy.

Julius Jones flunked out of ND in the early 2000s but was later allowed back in.

That's true. He flunked out and then worked his way back in. How many star athletes flunk out of the SEC schools?

“The University, then, is collectively responsible.”

Reading that report made me feel sick.

Not sure how they can honestly claim that a key factor was "Staff members’ lack of knowledge regarding on-the-field wind speeds" when it was apparent to everyone in the Midwest (including Declan Sullivan!) that the high winds made it incredibly unsafe to be up in that lift.

The line that got me was "we have reached the conclusion that no one acted in disregard for safety" because it was blatant disregard for safety.

While the university did take responsibility, they ultimately did so in a cowardly fashion.

I think the point was that there wasn't a willful disregard for safety, but an ignorance of what was considered safe use of equipment.  IOW, Kelly and/or his staff didn't say "I don't care how windy it is, put the kid up in the lift."  They were simply ignorant.  Which is still a big, big problem and shouldn't absolve the University from blame.

And again, if the family is sincerely comfortable with how it has been resolved, then I am as well.

I won't be saying anything, but I don't hold my nose and pretend Marquette is better than everyone... like Notre Dame does.

I suppose that's the best way to look at it (even though I still think the ND administration is full of it).

Try and read ND's mission statement and not think it is satire. What a bunch of lies.

If you wanted to be a ND fan, you should have gone to ND.

And you asked a question to me, personally, so I gave the answer.

Nice response, who even said I was an ND fan? I root for them passively in football and that's about it.

You said something I thought was pretty stupid and hypocritical because you dislike ND, I called you out on it.

Regardless, ND says they are the best while the Sullivan and Seeberg situations say otherwise.

I've got to believe that the Sullivans accepted more than an apology from ND.

What was hypocritical about it?  You can't just lump me in with people who turn up their noses because they are MU grads (hilarious that people would do that)

I never meant you specifically were an ND fan (yet you just admitted it?) "you" was a generalization of all people who root for ND who went to one of their rival schools.

Man, did a leprechaun pee in your Lucky Charms?  Why shouldn't ND the fanbase have an ego?  The team is number one in the country.  They are number one in graduation rate.  They have the most National Championships.  They have a ton of cash.  They spend a ton of cash on their program and school.  Even in the years they suck, they get top recruits.  Their academics are first tier.  They have an amazing alumni base (for networking).  Even when they suck, they are at the table of decision making.  Last week, the game against USC was the most viewed college football game this year.  Get with it dude, ND football is a cash cow and everyone wants a piece.  And don't hate because people like them for one reason or another.

And dude, you are embarassing the MU community and yourself by continually bringing up a death of a kid and talking about the kid and his family.  Please stop.

If I lost my child at the hands of Notre Dame, I can only hope there's an amount of money large enough to ease that kind of unimaginable pain.

It's about money. Always has been, always will be. Winning just fixes a lot of other problems.

Poor sample size, but it always strikes me when they do interviews with players from both teams.  During the USC - ND game they ran several interviews from ND players and USC players.  The comparison was striking.  Again, small sample size which isn't fair, but the ND players acquitted themselves very well.  USC is an excellent school, but they cut many corners (which they admit) to let athletes in.  I have no doubt ND does to some degree as well, but not in the same volume.

I think maybe part of what he is saying, is that the ego is always present. No matter how good the program is in a given year, the fanbase is always in your face about how important they are to CFB.  Touting many of the same facts you just did.  And my guess is that if they get stomped by Alabama or Georgia, the ND fanbase will talk about nothing but those same points as a way to diminish the accomplishments of the other school: grad rate, questionable academics etc.

Is Notre Dame a big player in CFB? Yes.  Does the CFB world still revolve around them? No, I don't think so, but maybe I am brainwashed from living the past 9 years in SEC country.

Remember the TCU team after they beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl 2 years ago?  Wow.  Andy Dalton quoted a long, not well known Bible verse right away.  Those interviews were very impressive.

First, why shouldn't a university be proud of the facts? If we had them, we would be touting them too. And I have been on this board long enough to see posters talk about graduation rate differentials between Wisconsin and MU. Kinda the pot calling the kettle black in that regard.
