If we win both of our games and Norfolk State beats Virginia, we play them again in the championship.

How did O'Quinn do? Might be NFSU isn't a sub-250 team after all.

Drexel was a 90% favorite to win the game and the #2 listed team on odds to win the whole thing.*

11 points, 12 rebounds, 6 blocks. McEachin had 15 points.

Beastly, and not in a Roseboro way.

That makes what we did to him that much more impressive. Great D on him last Monday.

I hadn't paid all that much attention to how they structured this tournament.  Why in the world did they have that preliminary game?  Was it just a way to induce Marquette (and Virginia) to participate by giving them a home game?

Looking at the bracket, I'm guessing they figured there would be noway the crappy teams would advance to create a second matchup in the championship.

Bingo, with an emphasis on home game.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Gives both teams an opportunity for an additional game.  29 game max, or 27 + 1 exempt tourney.  Tourney can have a max of four games.  With 3 bracket games, the game in Milwaukee got MU to their max of 31 games possible.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

We got the same deal last year for the CBE. Technically, the games against Bucknell and UW-Green Bay were both part of the CBE. My guess is as we go forward, you'll see these types of home games pretty much every year.

Yup, every major team would want the max 4 games, I think.  Unless you knew you had a great team with a short bench???

It certainly appears this is the model now.  Even Maui does it.

I wonder if we'll get a home game out of Maui next year. There are a lot of high-majors in that tourney. UNC, Illinois, and Texas seem like locks for the additional home game. Not sure who the other one will be. Probably between us, Mississippi State, and USC. We may have an edge since we took Louisville's spot, and I'd have to think UL would be the biggest name of those three.

Thanks so much for the detailed analysis of how the system works.  I knew about exempt games but did not know the technical rules.  Learning is fun.

Sorry to bump an "old" thread, but those 2 games of data clearly weren't a good indication for Drexel.  Can they beat Winthrop today?  If nothing else, it's a good reminder for me that with a small set of data, things might not always be as they seem (i.e. - MU being #8).  I hope they are that good, but we'll have to wait and see!

Totally agree and should have made that clearer.  Two games is a TERRIBLE predictor, especially during non-conf.  An entire season may not be a good enough predictor.

Maui actually has 12 teams involved. In the lead-up to Maui, each of the 7 "Island" teams (not counting Chaminade) plays an opening game against one of 4 other schools ("Mainland" teams.) For instance, Duke and Memphis each played Belmont this year. This past weekend, those 4 extra schools played in a 2-round tournament in Murfreesboro. Belmont knocked off Middle Tennessee St. to win the "championship."

So MU will have a home game next year against a team TBA.
