Maybe I shouldn't, but I get nervous when a 6"7 kid doesn't have a single dunk in his highlight reel. But, he is a 5 star prospect so I am naturally interested. Go sic 'em Wojo

Nevermind what I just said. The video in the link was nearly 2 years old. He was only a freshmen.
Here is a more recent link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi6luXpjdWw
Seems to have above average defensive instincts, passing, and ball handling for a player his size. Jay Bee, you live in Gopher territory, you seen him play?
-
I believe that video was from a year ago as I think that was Ellenson getting rebounds (I might be wrong). Hmmm, former AAU teammates?

He reminds a little bit of a modern day Chris Mullin. Has that Gym rat style of game.

His father is Richard Coffey, who was a talented rebounder for the Gophers when I lived in Minnesota in the late-80s. He was built like a truck and nobody messed with him. I think he had a cup of coffee (pun intended) in the NBA. Richard's a really good guy. If I remember correctly, he went on to be a paratrooper or something, and I think he's now a motivational speaker. I think he also has a basketball-playing daughter.
So I'm guessing Amir is intelligent, disciplined and hard working, because that's how I remember his pop.
-
He's one of the top recruits from Minnesota. Goes to Hopkins HS, which has put out good volume of D1 and NBA talent.

Noticed that also.

Have seen Amir millions of times. Search his name in latenighthoops.com for some comments
Huge fan. Dad was a stud for Minn when I was a younger guy. Two sisters playing D1
Kyle Anderson like in that he's a tall passer who can play numerous positions
Has grown up a lot over the past year. Confidence is now high and rightfully so
Great family, great kid... UNC, Minnesota tough competition likely
Passing skills are outrageous
His wingspan isn't big dude to small frame but his as are long. Standing reach good & knows how to get into passing lanes
Want to see him up his offensive aggressiveness & usage over the coming months
Amir and Henry both were with D1 Minnesota fka pump n run
Two years ago played together on 15's
A year ago Henry was w 16's, Amir 15's
This year both played 17U EYBL (pulley & WI PGE, respectively)
-
He reminds me a lot of a young Rodney Hood!

And his Grandfather was John Coffee. Built like a tank. Very talented big who could suck the life right out of you. Sadly he was executed for crimes he didn't committ in the 20's.

I doubt we land him but it's good to see he mentioned us right off the back as still being interested. He's a real nice player and a guy of his size and well rounded game is exactly what we are looking for.
Maybe something crazy will happen.

Why? Inferiority complex? Aim high.

Wingspan - includes your chest/frame.... reach - arms...
You can have a 'compact' chest, but long arms.. show wingspan doesn't measure out as being impressive, but for certain basketball functions the 'length' is actually excellent.
Amir is hoping to be back for the final evaluation period in the summer. He watched Henry's game here three weeks ago, just a couple of days after his injury. Seemed to be in pretty good spirits. (He and Henry were teammates in the past)
Now.. for him does he decide to commit now and not worry about showing and proving in July? Or focus on rehab and let the recruiting stuff play out as it may? With his skill level he's fine just working on getting healthy and not worrying about what schools will think in the late summer/early fall...
Much of his game - including instincts and passing - shouldn't be hindered a ton right off the bat. Would have liked to have seen him take a bigger role this HS season and in the summer (in terms of usage), but that's fine..
Great kid, lots of family support, excellent player... he'll be just fine. What does this mean from a UNC or others standpoint? Maybe "good" for other programs after him,...
Anyway, would be an A+ addition to MU if that's what ultimately happens.

In Wojo we trust.

All the teams he mentioned were "M" schools.
I blame the ghost of Amo: Burnsville High!

Coffey Suffers Season-Ending Injury
Dec 4, 7:12 PM
Hopkins (MN) 2016 shooting guard Amir Coffey, ranked the 34th best player in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite, suffered a season-ending injury on Tuesday night as Hopkins took on Burnsville in their third game of the season. Ben Segelbaum of The Royal Page, the high school newspaper for Hopkins, first reported the details of the injury:
"Coffey came down hard after a rebound attempt and held his lower leg, but got up to limp off the court. Midway through the half, fans saw Coffey leaving Lindbergh Center on crutches. Per team source, Coffey has a deep bone bruise, sprained MCL, self healing fractures and a torn ACL. He will need to get surgery and is most likely out for the remainder of his junior season."
While some players come back from such injuries faster than others, the injury will likely cost Coffey both his junior season in high school and his final year of AAU eligibility this spring/summer. While that may put some damper on Coffey's recruiting interest, he has already managed to pick up offers from schools such as Minnesota, Arizona, Indiana, Iowa State, Michigan State, and several more.

Early-committing and not rushing things this summer is a relevant consideration for him as mentioned awhile back.. hope he winds up in the Big Ten or Big East for my viewing purposes, but wherever he lands will get a good one.

Marquette will definitely beat Providence yesterday!

Oh man do I like this. I really really like this. I wanna go run all over the place and scream it from the mountains.
On an unrelated note, I was chatting with Corey Evans about Hauser... and for some reason his mom liked my tweet to Evans about how I was happy Wojo got in on him early (in no way did I tweet at Hauser or include his handle). Who knows what it means, but I like our 2016 prospect chances. Really wanna see Winston get on board too.

Apparently friends with Anim and lots of time playing with Henry as well.

Coffey and Anim played AAU together with Alex Illikainen on Howard Pulley
-
Where Ron Paul?!
-
Good news but Miller isn't infallible had Stone to Udub
-
Coffey and Hauser would be a great. Would love Winston too but think he'll choose Mich St. Hoping for one big in 2016. I really like Kevin Huerter too but can't get them all.
-
Would be a big get for us. I like his basketball IQ.
-

True, but he's right on when it comes to MU. And that's what really matters.

Coffey is exactly what we need. This would be huge.

We were in on this recruit before he got injured. We haven't wavered and that means a lot in recruiting.

Looks like a small forward, so does Hauser, could use a power forward?? Not sure you need both, thoughts on both games? Are they the same or different?

Coffey can probably play all over. He's got lots of basketball skills.
I'd way rather him than Hauser if it was either or.

What are the details on his injury. When did he get hurt, what did he do, and when is he going to be healthy?
Thanks

ACL, I think like 6 months ago, ACL, in the next couple of months. Aiming to play this summer.
As far as Hauser vs. Coffey? Give me both and I'll run away as fast as I can. Both are good shooters (great in Hauser's case) with high bball IQ and very good passers. Coffey will likely be consensus top 40 and Hauser top 75 when it's all said and done.
-
Both are wings. Don't know as much about Coffey but I think he and Hauser could play together. If Wojo has 3 to offer for 2016, which is the case as of right now, I could see two wings and a big or two wings and a PG or one PG, one wing and one big. Depends on what players Wojo thinks he can get and how he feels about the current roster PG and bigs. In no particualr order, 2016 needs as I see them:
Big: ???
Shooter: Hauser/Huerter/Coffey??
BPA: Winston, Coffey, Hauser/Huerter
So any two of Winston, Hauser, Huerter, Coffey, and one big would have me ecstatic.

Looks like Cheatham is the same player, so is Cohen and JJJ ?

JJJ will be a senior by the time Hauser or Coffey would arrive. Cheatham is similar. Could easily do a 2-3-4 with Cheatham/Hauser/Coffey and be versatile. We need to stop worrying about possible lineups.
In 2016 we will likely add a PG as we would have:
2 PG
2 Centers
8/9 players that could make up the 2/3/4. It won't be an issue.
-
Cheatham can play point and Coffey on the profile is listed as a guard.

I do not worry about that, more concerned with lack of size if Ellenson moves on in a year. Then MU is small.

2 center types, no power forward, bunch of small forwards and two guards. Even if you did play big, you would have no one on the bench to replace them.

Jerry Meyer usually follows suit on what Mark Miller does so if he switches from Iowa St to MU then I think we're rock solid (not saying Miller alone isn't good enough). My guess is in the next couple of days Jerry calls up Mark to ask why he picked MU, Mark tells him what he knows, and Jerry switches. If this goes down we're golden.
-

If Ellenson moves on after one year, I think that MU will look awfully attractive to any grad transfer PF that would be available next spring. Kyle Washington, a regular transfer from NC State who hails from Minnesota could be on the radar, and there could be a 2016 big man we haven't heard about yet. Wojo knows how to build a roster, I think that we'll be playing in 2016-17 with a very versatile roster that gives Wojo lots of options.
-

Heldt will eventually be a power forward. A more skilled Chris Grimm.
-
Heldt will eventually be a power forward. A more skilled Chris Grimm.
Still no back-ups if Ellenson leaves, and not sold that it is so easy to get a grad transfer as Wojo found out this spring.
-
No way Amir Coffey commits before playing again. Also Coffey seems to be on Minn campus all the time. With his Dad being a Gopher legend. They scare me.
-
Heldt will eventually be a power forward. A more skilled Chris Grimm.
I thought I heard that the plan was to groom him to replace Luke.

Uhh, Heldt is far more athletic than Grimm along with more skills.

Chris was the Human Moving Screen. Banger/grinder type

Large. Aggressive. Physical. Not offensively gifted while at MU.

There is no comparison between Heldt and Grimm.......unless Heldt is great at moving screens.

A 6'10" 245 lb center from Brighton, Michigan. Same class as Steve Novak, 2006. Played in 99 games at MU, started in 11, but never played starter's minutes, high was 13.4 minutes as a junior.

I watched Chris last play in the summer tourney that culminates at the Al. I think it was July '12. Anyway, he had a great time banging and bumping with guys that were 8-10 years younger. And he could still set a helluva pick.
-
Chris Grimm played great D on Alondo Tucker his junior year and we beat Bucky. He had a very good game at Bucky his senior year, too when we won. Chris Grimm, Badger killer.
-

Had anice game against G-Town at the BC as well. Those 3 games, however, we're pretty much what he accomplished.
-
I try to forget the painful NCAA tourney loss to Stanford - watching Wesley Matthews (6'5'') and dwight burke (6'8'' with shoes on) try to defend the lopez twins. And I thought to myself - why don't we have someone like Chris Grimm on the roster right now? A big guy that bangs and works hard? I wish so bad the amigos had a guy like that their senior year. Oh well.
Back on topic...I like everything I read about Coffey and I'd love to see him in uniform.
-

He also had a dunk against Duke where he was cherry-picking on D. Cannot forget that.

REAPER
-
Quick, someone text him or something.
'Hey honey! They're talking about me on scoop. No, really! I have no idea why it's in the Coffey thread. They do that sometimes.'
-
Uhh, Heldt is far more athletic than Grimm along with more skills.
My comparison to Grimm centered around the belief, that while not a true power forward Heldt could be a big body at the four like Grimm and Heldt would be a better a better offensive player than Grimm.
-
Chris Grimm played great D on Alondo Tucker his junior year and we beat Bucky. He had a very good game at Bucky his senior year, too when we won. Chris Grimm, Badger killer.
true that!

Speaking of things that would be Grimm... I sure hope we get this Coffey kid!

Jerry Meyer predicted Coffey to MU
The coaching staff sure does play its cards close to the vest. There seemed to be some momentum with Coffey a few months ago and then we haven't heard anything since. Now Meyer predicts him to MU, which means that he at least heard there was some recent update somewhere along the way. This would be a great get, obviously.

Possibly, but either way Mark is rarely wrong when it comes to MU

I guess he could have, but Miller made that prediction nearly 3 months ago. If Meyer was just following Miller's prediction, I feel like it probably would've come closer to when Miller made his prediction.

Yup, you're right that's typically how it goes. And I hope they're both right and that we're rock solid for this. I just find it interesting that Jerry didn't change his prediction immediately following Mark's prediction, but rather it's coming 2 1/2 months later. It's usually much quicker.

Nice. How long does the Summer Jam run? And what is the price of admission? Anybody have any idea of what time and what court Coffey may play on? Or any other MU targets, for that matter?
Thanks in advance.

Looks like they play in the quarterfinals at 8 AM. Don't know if Coffey is playing though.

I think Coffey really wants UNC and is holding off until he can get an offer from them. Tar Heels having a hard time getting recruits because of potential sanctions, and I think Coffey is hoping an offer will come his way as a result. Kind of reminds me of the Matt Ryan situation last year who ultimately settled on ND after it became clear he wouldn't get UNC because of his injury.

Note that I said "come to MU" and not "commit to MU" ;)
Coffey has already said Marquette will be one of his visits (along with Minnesota and Baylor). So I'm confident he's coming. Will he commit? From what I've heard, we're the leader, but still a little ways to go in this one. He does sound like a guy who wants to commit early, so hopefully we'll know in the next 2-3 months.

Gotcha. Yeah, my kid went to Butler and got the red carpet treatment on his college visit. Still decided on good old Marquette. The good news is that solved my transportation problem with both rug rats at the same place.

Amir is back in action this weekend, playing with his HS team in a tourney. Sounded all good in two games yesterday; has another two games today.

That's good to hear. I'm really hoping the staff gets to evaluate him at least a bit before taking a commitment. He's been out a long time and with only one scholarship available (currently) it's an important decision to make as far as who they end up giving that to.
Personally, I still think a PF is really needed in that class. Now if Anim can play PF or if someone like Cohen or Wally can give some minutes there it would lessen that need, but I'll admit I don't love giving our only two 2016 scholarships to 2/3 wing players when that's our position of greatest depth.

From what Hayward'sHeroes says, if MU recruits Amir as a wing, we won't get him. And I suspect that Wojo is honest upfront about how he's going to use a player.

I've said numerous times what position a player wants to play doesn't always line up with the position they will play. That's especially true for players 6'7" and taller. If the kid gets here and shows he can play some PG, so be it, but he's generally played wing in his career and will be recruited as such. I remember a lot of talk that Looney was a 2 and anyone recruiting him as a 3 or 4 wouldn't have a shot. Everyone recruited him as a 4, he went to UCLA as a 4, and was drafted to play in the NBA as a 4. That's just reality.
As far as Coffey, I guess my main question is how many players 6'7" and taller were recruited as PGs in the last decade? The only one that springs to mind immediately is Kyle Anderson. Those kids are pretty few and far between. We'll see, but I'd be surprised if anyone recruiting Coffey didn't see him as a wing first and give him other opportunities second.
-
Yo, #36 is doin' just fine, ai na?

Woah. I never said once that we won't get him if it's as a wing.
I said that him and his dad were looking for a PG opportunity. I said many times that they may realize that chance just isn't there.
And alas there is talk that Coffey now sees himself as a 2/3 in college.
Never once said he ain't coming if he can't play point

Shaka Smart and Texas offered Coffey tonight.

Yeah it's looking like as many have said PG isn't going to be realistic for him.
I just hope regardless he ends up here. Huge get.

Good article.
Should note that the author only mentioned a few teams outside of the gophers(a couple not even in Amir's top right now)
And Amir himself said nothing about any teams.
All about him, his dad and the families work ethic.

I cannot help thinking he is a smaller version of Henry in that he can play all over. How Wojo utilizes Henry may help recruit him, if he sees Henry as a one and done.

Versatile, sure, but quite different players. (And they were teammates in 15U for D1 Minnesota fka Minnesota Pump N Run.)
I project Amir as a much lower usage guy than Henry. Want to see Amir's usage rise more than he's been at, but don't see it ever being to a Henry level (28%+ is possible as a frosh)... Amir.. 18-24% year 1

SMU offers 2016 Hopkins (MN) wing Amir Coffey, he announces.

SMU will certainly pay Amir more than anywhere else.

SMU will certainly pay Amir more than anywhere else.
And if the young man chooses SMU with everything that's being implied with Coach Brown you would have to call it 'dodging a bullet' and not 'a miss'.
**btw - i don't follow HS kids but judging from this thread he seems to be a good kid and could resist the urges of the dark side.

It sure seems on CBS Sports that Amir is likely going to Minny. Wojo is striking out a tad right now, is it the school or program, or Wojo having trouble closing?

Really?

There is a lot of young talent on our team, which will make it hard to recruit a player that expects to start right away.

He just had his official visit with Minny, hence all the coverage. He may end up there but I wouldn't say this is a #donedeal

We have to be able to fill a good squad of 13 players. We can't go into every year with 10 guys.

Andrew Rowsey and Sam Hauser make #11 and #12 next year, so Wojo can be pretty selective for the one scholarship.
Really seems like he's focused on Lamar Stevens and possibly Coffey and if neither sign with MU, the staff can find someone in the spring like they did with Traci Carter, Sacar Anim and Rowsey. Love how this staff has really zeroed in on just a few recruits and hasn't reached to this point.

It is a challenge to recruit when there isn't obvious playing time available. Assuming Henry comes back for a second season, with Rowsey and Hauser in the fold, the only visible 'need' is a 4th big. So, IMO, sit back, chillax, and look for MU to sign a big of some sort in the spring.

Are you seriously asking if the guy who just pulled in one of the best recruiting classes in the history of the program is having "a problem closing" because a kid from Minneapolis took an official visit to his hometown school?
-
Trolls only worry about being ignored.
Same guy who said Wojo is doing a disservice to Luke and his NBA dreams by utilizing him in the post with his back to the basket.

While I agree with you, Sultan, that it is a great recruiting class (at least appears to be), the hyperbole I s a little stout by saying one of the best in our history. These guys have not yet played a real game. It does look promising, though.

From Rivals after his Official to Minnesota.....
"Amir has one other visit scheduled right now, and that visit is with Texas," his father said. "Not this weekend but the following weekend. I think after that visit, I think there is a strong chance that Amir will make a decision. Very soon."

Shame, I really wanted Coffey.
But Stevens isn't chopped liver or a pity pick up.
I'd love to get him

My instinct is that Coffee wants to be part of a Power 5 type program. I thought for a long time he was waiting for a UNC to materialize. I think this Texas offer will be as close as he will get.
Just as an aside, I saw this article relating to Michigan State recruiting. This is what we are up against. In some respects it makes me respect the job Wojo is doing even more.

For some, that will be a home run pitch. For others, that want to be at a school where basketball is king, it won't. Different strokes for different folks.

Agree. Henry went to MSU event and then promptly signed with us. I think Caleb Swanigan went To this event and then committed to MSU later, although he ultimately de committed .

Looking like a near done deal to minny

Ahh, the battle of the Norwood Teague proteges. If it's not Marquette, I gotta pull for Pitino...
Agreed. This would be a much bigger loss for Pitino than for Wojo. Richard Coffey was a key player in the glory years for Minnesota basketball and you would have to think that would be a strong pull for Amir. Of course there are always kids like Wes Matthews that want to go a different way.
-

I'm not aware of many recruiting wins for little Rick. Is Coffey going to have much talent around him?

Got a lot of freshman on this years team. A few of them are potentially really good players as well as Mason who was a freshman last year.
The whole size part of the roster is project material but they could be solid next year for Coffey with much more PT and hometown to offer.

Between comments/tweets from Richard and Amir canceling his only other official as well as what the experts are predicting/reporting...it appears to be NEAR done he picks the gophers.
Was simply updating on how things are looking.

Nothing confusing about it. When someone says, "respect the process," it's not an opinion. But hey, if you think it's an opinion then more power to you. You are way too cool for that though. Lol

Now, I'm actually done.
I don't really care whether people think I'm intelligent or not. I do know for certain that I'm more intelligent than you, though, as I've never asked for it both ways. The 2 times I can remember "correcting" someone's grammar I was doing so tongue in cheek, and one of those times I was proven wrong and laughed about it, so not sure how that's attempting to lead people to believe I'm intelligent, but if that's how you took it...well, that's not surprising in the least bit. And neither time was someone using a figure of speech, like in this case.
The difference between us is I have no problem admitting when I am wrong. Like when I said that it should be "My friends and I" and was told it was correct at "my friends and me," I simply laughed and essentially said, "The joke is on me." When you said, "That's an opinion!" and it was pointed out that, no, it isn't an opinion (because, well, it's not) you went on a childish rant about sh!tting.
It's okay, you'll learn to laugh about mistakes someday.
Lol.
