Title: 2021 Masters Thread
Post by: Herman Cain on April 05, 2021, 08:26:58 AM
The First Major of the Year is upon is. No Tiger due to car injury. Tournament should be wide open. Brooks Koepka who has been injured says he is playing.

9-9-9, will you go out on a limb and say that Tiger won't intimidate all the participants this time?

Yes. It is safe to say he is not going to intimidate the participants this time .  When he recovers from the accident we can evaluate further  8-).

Fair enough. Just having some fun.

Who you got this year? I'm rooting for Rory but thinking maybe Dustin Johnson or Justin Thomas.

It would be cool if Westwood could make one more run and actually win one of these, or maybe somebody else who has been close but not quite.

I am with You and Goose , rooting for Rory. He is sucking wind now, but if he just goes out and plays the magic could come back quickly

Dustin owned the course in November, so a lot of good muscle memory there. Justin is in good form and hits it long enough to have shorter irons in. Morikowa learned how to win a major and he has the iron game necessary for this course.

Dark horse would be Sergio. He is striking the ball very well, if he gets a lucky week on the greens (which is a very iffy thing) he could be there at the end.

Corey Conners and Zally are my top 10 bets. I think Corey can contend, Zally needs some time at Augusta before he threatens.

I’ve already got futures out on Rahm, Cam, Sungjae, Rory (dead), Jordo and Xander. I can currently cash out for even at worst on all of them except Rory.

Tiger Woods Was Speeding About 40 M.P.H. Above the Limit When He Crashed

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/07/sports/golf/tiger-woods-crash-update.html?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20210407&instance_id=0&nl=breaking-news&ref=headline&regi_id=108420427&segment_id=55133&user_id=d36dcf821462fdd16ec3636710a855fa

Tiger Woods was driving about 40 miles per hour over the speed limit when he crashed a sport-utility vehicle in February, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Woods was traveling between 84 and 87 miles per hour in a 45 m.p.h. zone, Villanueva said at a news conference Wednesday. His car was traveling at an estimated 75 m.p.h. when it struck a tree.

“The primary causal factor for the collision was driving at an unsafe speed for the road conditions and being unable to negotiate the curve,” said Villanueva.

Woods was not cited for driving too fast and no criminal charges will be filed, Villanueva said. He added that there were no signs of impairment, and that Woods was wearing his seatbelt.

That’s unfortunate. Fortunate neither he nor someone else wasn’t injured or worse. It was good that he was wearing his seatbelt. It’s saved a lot of lives.

Everything about the Tiger crash continues to be completely fishy.  Chalking it up to simple speeding and then say "he accidentally hit the gas" but reiterate he was completely sober and uninhibited, even though they didnt take any samples following the crash.

At the end of the day, he survived, nobody else was hurt, nothing was damaged other than a car, thankfully, but it REEKS off sweeping things under the rug to protect a legendary athlete's misdoings.

Yeah, especially after the DUI he had after his last back surgery. Glad he’s ok and hopefully on the road to recovery. He definitely hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt though.

Cause he has a history of substance abuse and issues with that and driving. And then the added oddities of how the direct aftermath was handled compared to other similar scenarios.

Also, I’ve been in multiple accidents and nearly avoided accidents.  In those situations, and otherwise, never have I accidentally hit the gas instead of brake, and have never heard of anyone else doing so outside of the very young, very elderly, or impaired drivers

I'm not here to suggest he was intoxicated. But surely you could think of a reason for it to be covered up if he was.

As for police/first responders saying no obvious signs of intoxication, there could be plenty of reasons for that. People tend to be a little woozy after slamming into a tree at 70 mph. He did say he couldn't remember the accident after all.

The other explanation of course is simply that he was completely sober.

Yeah this seems like one of those situations where the cover up is actually the simplest explanation.  Either the guy with a record of driving under the influence of prescription meds did that again or the unimpaired 45 year old driver with a history of driving under the influence was not impaired in any way this time but panicked and hit the gas instead of the brakes, never hit the brake before crashing, the police rushed out to say he wasn't under the influence even though he said he didn't remember driving and the police never sought a blood draw and have stated they do not release investigation details without his lawyers' approval.

And ultimately, whatever.  He got lucky and didn't hurt anyone else.  But if substances did play a role here, I really hope he gets that figured out for his own sake.

I mean, if someone is in a single car accident with the injuries of the type that Tiger suffered, do they usually do a blood draw?

I think the simplest explanation is that he was driving too fast.

Yea but wasn’t that the Toyota lawsuit and it was under 100 incidents?  Not exactly a wide ranging situation.

And again, the key factor here is Tiger’s well publicized history of driving under the influence.

There are only 3 possibilities imo regarding the TW crash:

1)  He was asleep.

2) He was on drugs, alcohol, or both.

3)  He tried to kill himself.

Other explanations aren't plausible to me.  He never braked, going off the road, at 87 mph.  The idea he accelerated but tired to brake is very difficult to believe.  He's extremely lucky not to have killed anyone and be alive.

So who had Rose winning? (I didn't, either.)

He was +2 after 7 and then ... zoom! Eagle-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie-birdie-par. So in the space of 11 holes, he had more birdies than I've had in the last 11 months, and as many eagles as I've had in the last 11 years.

I hope he comes down to earth and a few players rise up to challenge him, because I want to have an actual competition to watch on the weekend.

Quite an opening day for many of the big names. Paging Rory! Paging Bryson! Paging Lee! Paging Phil! Hello?

He has one of the best records at Augusta for someone that hasn’t won the event.  Surprised he played well because he simply hasn’t been in form and withdrew at Bay Hill with a balky back.  But his record at Augusta is pretty darn good

Rose has some early troubles but got it back to even par for the day -7

Spieth at -5 will be interesting to see if he can carry the good play through the weekend

And how bout Kim? He got pissed, broke his putter, and now heat making pats using his 3-wood as a putter.

Yeah. I've seen thicker rakes. He hits the hell out of the ball, though. Could play in the final group with Rose tomorrow.

ESPN reporting that Tiger thought he was in Florida when he woke up, from the police report.

Offering options.

It's possible.  It's inconceivable to me he was perfectly fine but speeding and lost control.  The fact that he did not brake could very well mean he fainted or had a seizure.  People fall asleep at the wheel all the time every hour of the day.   I'm not sure why that would be covered up if that's what happened.  He could have had the cruise control on at 80+ mph, before the curve  and fell asleep before going off the road. The idea he hit the gas and not the brake isn't plausible at all.  Even if that happened you would quickly take your foot off and find the brake pedal.  Why are they seemingly  covering this up?  He is beyond lucky that he didn't kill people or himself.

Fun leaderboard heading into the weekend.

Rose with a 1-stroke lead over a young upstart whom some in the know say will be a great champion. Spieth 2 back. Finau, Thomas, Matsuyama and Champ 3 back. Plenty of other notables in the hunt, including DeChambeau at -1.

Among those missing the cut: Johnson, Sergio, Rory, Koepka, Kuchar, Scott, Westwood, Day.

I cashed in Rory to miss the cut at +400, thought that was the best bet pre-tournament. Also took Adam Scott to finish as top Australian at +350.

Weekend plays:
Kim Top 5 +400
MacIntyre Top 10 +1100

His par putt on 18 yesterday was brutal.  I think he has to be leading by at least two heading to the 72nd hole because that flat stick of his is no bueno

so the rules allow si woo kim to use another putter.  his manufacturer sent him a steel graphite composite shaft putter overnight.  the one he usually uses but the one he broke had a steel shaft.  wonder why he wasn't using the steel graphite to begin with?  was it because of the masters greens? a different touch or feel?

as for why he did it?  broke the club?  hey, it's stressful...jon rahm is like hey dude, let's have a couple

I%u2019m not a DeChambeau hater or one who revels in his misfortune, but his play isn%u2019t always the best indicator.

Talking to my golf pro BIL, we best equated him to a really good 3PT shooting team who relies heavily on it, given his super aggressive style and the risks he takes based on his approach.

When he, or a team like the Rockets, were on, they are a juggernaut and put up wild numbers, but if they are off, they look rather pedestrian.  Boom or bust. Both are super fun world beaters when clicking, but frustrating on the other end
