Title: Top 50 wins...
Post by: muguru on February 19, 2017, 12:00:05 AM
After tonight's win, and the fact that Vandy now snuck into the top 50..MU is 5-5 against the RPI top 50. Most of you probably knew that...but what many of you may not know is that amongst the top 100 RPI teams..there are only 15 teams in the entire country that have a better winning % against top 50 RPI teams then MU..

Kansas
Nova
Baylor
Louisville
Carolina
Oregon
Gonzaga
Arizona
Kentucky
Duke
Butler
Florida St.
Purdue
Creighton
West Virginia
That's it folks..the first 9 are the top 9 RPI teams in the country in order..The next 3 are 11,12,13.

Notre Dame
Florida
Virginia
UCLA
Minnesota

Those 5 are also toed with MU at .500 against top 50 RPI teams. 21 teams in the country(one of them being MU) have a .500 or better record against top 50 RPI teams. That's it, 21 and MU is one of them.

And for Georgia to sneak in as well.

Yeah they were so close to Uk twice.

Best part is neither vandy or Georgia are particularly good. But top 50 is top 50

Only thing that matters right now is getting to .500 against St. John's.

Great win vs. X, but the refs did not let X exert their will.  Not a typical Big East contest, don't let the W go to your head.  Not unlike V win, it was a Wisconsin style basketball game.  I  hope our team learns to fight thru adversity not only from the front.  Front runners frequently lose when the tide turns.

I thought the stats were insightful. Sure winning the next game is the most important thing. But this was good food for thought. Makes me think at 9-9 we would have a better shot. I'm banking on 10-8. Hope that's not too much foresight.

Our team--that's precious.
Now its the refs?  You certainly cover all bases when discussing your team.

Your data is bad. Please state the source so we can easily tell if it's a known bad-data site.

As an example, you say UCLA is .500... a site like ESPN, which has incorrect RPI calculations, unlinked reporting, and general awfulness, shows them at 3-3 vs. top 50. That is incorrect. They are 4-3 through yesterday's games:

4 wins include Kentucky, California, Oregon and USC.

#35 Getting two techincals and tossed from the game was huge. We had no way of stopping him. Even with him seeing limited time both of our centers fouled out.

You are correct, I posted this before the UCLA game was final. But the point stands, there are only 21 teams in the top 100 that are .500 or better against the top 50 RPI and MU is one of them.

MU is 2-4 vs. RPI 51-100.. that part doesn't rank so well...
...and I think there are only ~5 teams with a worse NC SOS in the top 100..

balance...

Non-conference schedule and results. Vandy has a great non-conference schedule and has gotten some results with it. 9 rpi 100 opponents non-conference. Marquette has 5. Marquette's best non-conference win is.....Vandy.  Vandy is what it is, a team that plays very well some nights and not others. It can look like a team with a new coach that has lost two early entry NBA players at point guard and power forward.  But they are in it most nights. They have some strong opponents left too.  Vandy is hanging around the bubble so that will help their efforts. 3 of their final 4 reg season games are tough ones vs RPI top 50 teams.

MU needs to tighten up non-conference schedule a little bit, but could have helped themsleves with a couple of more wins.

FWIW, 61.5% of #mubb's games this season have been against RPI Top 65 teams.

Yes the point stands. Appreciate it MU guru.

Beat me to it.  We have been solid against our better opponents.  My concerns are (1) our performance against slightly lesser teams that we should be able to handle at least half of the time, and (2) the (typical) excess of SOS killers.

Alternative facts. The enemy of the Marquette community.

Well maybe #35 Gaston will learn to STFU, hey? And then, when he already has one T, it might be a good idea not to get into a tussle with an opposing player. I blame Gaston for being stupid and not exerting his will, I don't blame the refs for not allowing Gaston to crush us as Vogue suggested.

The game was officiated even handedly, both teams were held to the same standard.
It was not in my opinion typical Big East style officiating.  X did not our could not adjust.

How you work that into a metric is beyond me.

There are plenty of referee stats out there... nonetheless, there were some poor calls last night.
