Recruit wrapup: Jae Crowder

A little over a year ago, Marquette Golden Eagles coach Buzz Williams struck gold when he was able to sign guard Darius Johnson-Odom out of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

In a moment of superficial selfishness, I secretly hope Jae cuts the dreads. For some reason, I've never liked dreads on the court.

That's my completely useless post for the day.

He'll probably have to.  The team ususually does something to their hair around tourney time (i.e., go bald or funky hair designs).  He'll need to show team solidarity.

On the other hand, the team solidarity could be that everyone starts going for the dread look starting this summer.   :o

I could be down with the dreadlock look for the entire team.  God knows, Forzena's look is looking tired.

About the only way for Buzz to keep the -ahum- buzz going this year at the same pace as last year would be if he grew dreads.

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I really like Crowder's attitude. The fact that he is already planning on coming in and taking a leadership role based on hard work and a winning history is something that I think is going to be a very valuable asset to a young team. Regardless of whether we sign a big this signing period, I love the fact that we are shaping up to be a "junkyard dog" type of team again next year. He and Jimmy will be a fun, undersized duo to watch mix it up. A big man wouldn't hurt though.

And I love the dreads.

I'm not concerned about his dreads. I just want to see Yous or Otule sporting a huge 'fro next season!

Great article. If he can come anywhere close to filling Lazar's shoes, I'll be happy. But after seeing what he did in the title game, and the recognition he's getting now, I have to think that Crowder will prove to be another great signing by Buzz.

Gotta love that Buzz was able to land the JUCO National Player of the Year - without Jae even taking a campus visit.  That says a lot about Buzz and staff's ability to land a player just based on relationship aspects - and not all of the fanfare of traditional recruiting visits.  Also, thinks it says a TON about JAE, that he is more concerned about substance than style - definitely doesn't come across to me as a drama queen, big-headed, ego-centric player - if he's willing to commit sight unseen.  We know he'll love the facilities at MU, as well as the campus, and urban life.  Hopefully we can tolerate the winter, but other than those 5 months - MKE is a great place to be - and thankfully in the worst 5 months, he will be totally engaged and focused with the basketball season from November - March.

Love Jae's quotes in this article - seems like a great kid, and about as close to a replacement for Lazar Hayward as we could hope to find.  That said, let's be fair to the kid and not expect him to be the next coming of Lazar!  Love the dreads.  Love his attitude.  I project him as a starter - possibly immediately - but definitely by the start of Big East play.

I LOVE the dreads.......

"I see the fans like them already because I’m hearing, ‘Jae, don’t cut your hair,’ and things like that. The dreads are not going anywhere," he said with a laugh. "I’ve had those going on two years right now. They’ve grown pretty fast, and I don’t plan on cutting them so I’m pretty sure they’re going to get pretty long. I think the fans will like them."

Nah, he won't.  Remember, Dwight Byucks didn't remove his rows for the tourney.

Honestly, committing site unseen is more of a negative than a positive.  Would you commit to going to a college without every visiting the place?

I visited MU as a favor to my mom.  I went in mid Feb and it was sleeting sideways.  Also, this was before any of the campus rennovation.  They showed me a room in McCormick which I thought was smaller than a jail cell.

In my case, sight unseen would have been a better idea. :)

For a student-athlete, not so much.

He's committing to his coaching staff, with whom he needs to have a trusting relationship, the facilities, and the support system that's in place for the players on the team all of which he can learn about without ever seeing in person.  It actually says quite a bit about the staff that they can develop that relationship wihout the kid ever having set foot on campus.

Think how long Buzz's hair would be if we went the whole season undefeated :)

Buzz with long hair, dreadlocked or not, would have to be a source of serious national attention!

Did Odom visit?

I know there had been MU interest but thought it was only letters which makes me wonder if he ever made it out to Milwaukee.

He committed, so probably not.
