I saw on the craptastic thread an interesting little exchange about burgers. I refused on principle to participate in that CF, but that particular discussion interested me. I thought that a separate thread about best burgers was worthy of the superbar.
Crawfish Junction in Milford, Wisconsin. The Hangover Burger. 1/2 pound of beef, beer battered. Bacon, Fried Egg, Cheese, Hash-browns on the ridiculously large bun.

Without a doubt, the Blackjack Burger at Potowatomi. Bacon, slaw, ranch, pepper jack cheese, and the best bun mankind could conceive. It's a truly amazing burger.
Other good ones in Milwaukee...Solly's, the Hangover Burger at Stack'd on the pretzel bun, the Loser Burger at Sobelman's, and the best chain burger is Five Guys (sorry Kopp's...their burgers are just too dried out).

I am torn, as much as I want Oscar's to do well, I also don't want thaaat many people knowing about it/going there. It's awesome on a game day or any weekend day to be able to go in there and not stand elbow to elbow. That being said I gotta want them to succeed so I am confirming my vote for the Big O medium rare, awesome!

Head south over the 16th Street viaduct from Marquette. Once you get over the bridge take your first right on to Pierce. Down about two blocks on your right.

Oscar's is my favorite in Milwaukee.
Favorite normal priced burger is the Earthride from Kuma's Corner in Chicago. 10 oz. patty, red onion marmalade, bacon jam, canadian bacon, pancetta, bacon.

Its on Armitage, but yeah, that place is awesome. Kuma's is fantastic, but after waiting for 2-3 hours, you start to question if it was worth it.
Rosebud has a surprisingly fantastic burger as well.

Didn't Oscar open up his place after working at Sobleman's for years? As for Kuma's in Chicago, it is fantastic. The patio during the summer helps alleviate the wait time.

I wasn't impressed by Fred's and people always want to go there. I guess best burger in the area, but the competition isn't great.

Agreed. The best burger I've ever had is The Big O. But as a native Milwaukee South Sider, Mazo's is right up there...plus you can hop right across the street to Leon's afterwards!!

I've eaten way too many burgers to pick out just one as the best, but my current favorite comes from a brewpub in suburban Chicago (South Barrington, to be exact) called The Lucky Monk.

Yes. Oscar left after running sobelman's tallgrass (now sobelman's east side). I believe they had a falling out awhile back

You sir are 100000000% correct on Lucky Monk. I just noticed this thread and was going to say Lucky Monk, thinking no one else had ever heard of it or been there. I too have eaten way too many burgers (my doc agrees) and hands down (right now) Lucky Monk is the winner. That place is awesome, absolutely love it. It's not just their burger, but the fries that go with it, fantastic place.

Also, I don't get the love for Shake Shack. Went to one of the locations in NYC after MU lost to Ville in the BET, didn't understand the hype at all, thought it was way over rated for all the hype.
For a chain burger, I've always thought Portillo's makes a solid burger. I was in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago, stopped at Kopp's, thought it was on par with a Whopper (which isn't saying much).

Gonna have to try the BigO. The picture looks amazing- very similar to a Sobelman burger; but still different.
I love Sobelmans and Five Guys (will have to try Oscars and Mazos and Stack'ds Hangover burger) but my favorite is back in St. Louis at a small diner called Carl's Drive Inn. Basic diner burger and it's delicious.

Sobelmans was much, much better about 7 years ago before they got too popular for their own good. Now they over cook their burgers and skimp on the toppings.

This is s tough question to answer, so I'll change it slightly to make it easy on myself. If I had to choose only one to eat from this point forward...Redamak's in New Buffalo, MI would probably be it. For th erecord, the fries served a long side are an important factor. Good fries seem to be harder and harder to come by these days.

Redamak's is a popular place for my family to gather, as New Buffalo is as close to a halfway point as anything. I have eaten their burgers a few times and.....meh. Good, but not mind boggling.

Anybody in Chicago should try Bad Apple on Lincoln in Lincoln Square. Great burger selections (haven't had a bad one yet) and an impressive beer list to get lost in. Not sure it ranks as the best, but damn tasty.

Locally (Cleveland-area), for a quick and gooey type of burger, I'm inclined to go with Swenson's (http://www.swensonsdriveins.com/) Galley Boy. I love them. For a more substantial burger, I'll go with Whitey's (http://www.whiteyschili.com/rest.htm). I love all their burgers, but the chili burgers are awesome - served in a bowl.
I hit an interesting burger joint in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago - Bailey's Range (http://www.baileysrange.com/). It was St. Patrick's Day weekend and they had a couple of burgers made from corned beef. Different, but very tasty.

I live across the street from Baileys range. They have a very good selection and it rotates throughout the year. The place has a very nice selection of local Missouri beers and I can get Sprecher root beer there too.

My daughter thought she had died and gone to heaven when she was handed a menu with a variety of root beers to choose from. She settled on one called Virgil's, and she loved it. I have no idea if it was good or not, but she enjoyed it.
I had never really spent much time in STL before that weekend. Very nice city.

I'm happy to not be the only Red Robin fan out there. Sure there are better burgers in the world (iron horse hotel's is really good) but Red Robin does a fantastic job in my opinion. Although their fries are lousy.

Agreed. Bombers is okay, but they are completely living off beating Sobelman's in Food Wars. Honestly, my favorite part of their bar is chucking peanut shells on the floor. I feel the same way about Kopp's. So many people love it, I just don't think it's all that great. Their burgers are usually a bit overcooked and the meat itself doesn't really have any notable flavor.

Kopps burgers are over rated. The frozen custard is pretty good.
One name I have not seen pop up on this thread is AJ Bombers. Personally, I've never been (RIP The Corner). Has Bombers been able to maintain their hype?

Yes. Whattaburgers are alive and well throughout the DFW Metroplex. They have new competition though.....In & Out Burgers have entered the DFW market with multiple locations.

Was goign to post this. IMHO, Bad Apple is the best. The Big Texan is amazing (burger, pulled pork, pepperjack cheese, barbeque sauce on texas toast). Also, they flavors for their fries are great.

Also glad Sobelman's has not been anyone's best list. Its good, I appreciate the Marquette love in their original location and them saving the Angelo's location, but their burgers are above-average, nothing more.
EDIT: Same goes for Bomber's. Both of these places are good, but completely overrated.

In Chicago at Fireplace Inn (in Oldtown) their BBQ burger is amazing, burger with pulled pork, bacon, onion ring, and bbq sauce.

They serve between two pieces of white toast because anything else detracts from the burger. Very delicious hamburgers. It's the birthplace of the hamburger and while that is disputed, they definitely have been continuously since 1900 serving them longer than anyplace else in existance. And never ask for ketchup of french fries as they don't offer either as they also distract from the burger.

The Seymour Community Historical Society of Seymour, Wisconsin, credits Charlie Nagreen, now known as "Hamburger Charlie", with the invention of the hamburger. Nagreen was fifteen when he reportedly made sandwiches out of meatballs that he was selling at the 1885 Seymour Fair (now the Outagamie County Fair), so that customers could eat while walking. The Historical Society explains that Nagreen named the hamburger after the Hamburg steak with which local German immigrants were familiar.

The best burger I ever ate was the cheddar burger at Paradise Pup in Des Plaines, IL. You know its good when there can be a line up to 25 to 50 deep waiting to get in.
Poochies in Skokie, IL is a close second as the cheddar burger is outstanding and the fresh cut fries complete the meal.

I have read that before. That's why I said disputed. And technically that's not a hamburger, it's at best a smushed meatball sandwich or what we'd call out here a meatball grinder. Neither of which is a hamburger. And "Hamburger Charlie" isn't in business any more either is he?

They ran a commercial in the seventies with a woman bragging, "I ate twelve Krystals once." Well, have you seen the size of them? Big whoop-de-do.

Went for the first time last night - absolutely awesome. Great burger, great atmosphere, great price. This place will be the new Sobleman's in terms of crowded-for-the-space within a year or two.

I am not sure about burgers, but the best hot dog I ever ate was in July 1956 at a Yankee game. Now you must understand a nine year old Catholic school kid eating a hot dog on a friday was right up there with the other seven deadly sins according to the good sisters. I can still remember the smell and the taste was to die for.

Best ever is at the 4 Seasons (Lounge) in Chicago. All Kobe with cheddar & a quail egg on top. I still have dreams about it.

To start, my patty is 100% Kobe beef covered in savory, melted Maytag bleu cheese. Then come the sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, crispy prosciutto and cabernet reduction on a salty pretzel bun. It’s just the right amount of salty, crunchy, savory and sweet.

Oscars is great and Major Goolsby's also has nice ones. Haven't had AJ Bombers or Sobelmans. The burgers at The Boneyard Pub and Grill are great too.

I worked there as a waiter in the summer of 2001 I believe. Friday night all you can fish fry, and Saturday night all you can eat crab legs were hellish for servers.

Have been to the Calhoun location in MPLS. Parasole place and a little overpriced just like all Parasole restaurants. Good burger not great. What is great is the alcohol laced shakes that they serve, Hard Shakes, and the Lake Street Lemonade.

Went to Kroll's once, never again.
It was a frozen, flavorless patty that was cooked to death, and they tried resuscitating it with two paddles of butter. It was terrible. And this was on a non-gameday up there.

Had a Kona burger at the Kona Grill. Pretty damn good. Ordered it rare (like all good beef should be prepared). It was cooked perfectly. Pretty darned tough to get a good rare burger anymore.

I work very close by and have been there many times. Burgers are solid. White Trash Burger there is killer: chicken-fried bacon, cheese curds, and lots of velveeta. Only annoying part is everything is a la carte. Most of the time I would rather drive a little further down Excelsior to Bunny's for a much bigger menu, better specials, and better burgers.

Bill was not terrible. My wife had awesome tuna steak and I had great burger. That along with couple of drinks each and the stiff with tip was about $70.00. In years past I would have paid more there if memory serves me. Have to admit been thinking about going back for last two weeks but travel has kept me away.

Marquette Gyros's burger was probably the best on campus from 1996-2001.
Louie D's on Wells wasn't too shabby either.

The Bear Trap Inn in North Lake, WI. 35 min drive from mke and the place is a kind of a dive, but the burger is the best. Staff/owners are very friendly too.
In Chicago, I love Rock's in Lincoln Park. Get the Rocks burger if you're there.

Just got back from lunch at Burger Jones in Burnsville. Had the November burger of the month. Regular burger with peperjack cheese, bacon infused mayo, camelized onions, and onion straws, all on a toasted, buttered english muffin bun.

When I was on campus I loved going out because I would always end my night with the grilled chicken sandwich from Louie D's, with cheese and bacon. That sandwich probably kept me from hooking up more often. At least that's what I blame it on.

don't know if i missed it somewhere in here, but has anyone tried the heart attack grill? they have waitresses dressed up as nurses or something. i think they are in arizona? their burgers are named after bypass surgery-single, double, triple, etc. they also were met with controversy by the media cuz of the analogies to health issues so they must be good ;D couldn't ask for any better free pub

That place is gross. They put an entire stick of butter in their milkshakes. They refuse to serve water because it doesn't have any calories. Anyone who weighs over 350 pounds eats free, and they have a scale with a big digital display (a la "The Biggest Loser")out front to see if you qualify.

i'm not sure, but if you've been there and can attest to their burgers just being artery cloggers and not good tasting, cool. however, if i am in the vicinity of one in las vegas which i do go thru fairly often on my way to lake havasu city, i think i would have to check it out just for grins. i'll just take a couple aspirin as a pre-med to thin the blood a little first.

Not sure if this place was already mentioned because I don't feel like going through the entire thread: Flub a Dub Chubs is a little, unassuming place at Broadway and Wellington. Outstanding burgers on fresh pretzel buns. Usually ranked in the "best burger" articles in local magazines and newspapers. Great hot dogs, too, but I loved their burgers. Less expensive and less hyped than many others.
Having said all that ...
Most of the best burgers I have eaten in my lifetime have been the ones I have grilled for myself with the fresh toppings I have put on them. Making a great burger ain't exactly rocket science.

We used to live on Wellington and Sheridan (in a building owned by the Wirtz family, who actually were decent landlords, believe it or not). Loved me some Chilam Balam!

Indeed. I find that a well trimmed burger delivers a superior multi-sensory experience. Not only is the presentation more stunning but the visual cue of a hint of pink weeping juicy goodness communicates the cut is appropriately aged and has been prepared properly. Older beef can become tough and full of gristle with an excessive fat content; one can almost hear the tired flesh nagging at you from the plate throughout the meal.
Finally, the well trimmed burger has decidedly less gaminess than its more natural sister. Whether from diet or grooming, the well trimmed burger has none of that piquant pungentness that can be found in a burger lurking beneath a heavy coat of garnish. That aroma takes on added vengeance in summer when a man is more inclined to indulge his hunger for burger.

Just had the Big Gringo at Oscar's last night....Deeeeeeelectable! Best burger I've had in Milwaukee and replaces my previous favorite, Jake's in Brookfield. Love the brew selection there as well. Not many places have Anchor Steam on tap.

Good choices. Wisco burger at Jake's? If Jake's had Oscar's fries I'd be in Heaven. That's my only problem with Jakes...have to order fries separately. Definitely have to order a side of the cheese sauce with those too.

Love the Wisco Burger. I do agree that ordering the fries separately is annoying, but they are pretty good(Oscar's are better). Also Oscar's has a better beer selection.
I have a friend that started a Burger of the Month club here in Milwaukee, where once a month he picks a supposedly good burger place and a date/time. We all meet up, have burgers, beer, and good conversation and then score the burger. Things like quality of add-ons, beer selection, and fries are judged as part of it. Couldn't recommend it highly enough.
It's been really enlightening about what's good and not good about Milwaukee area burgers. One big take away has been made to order. The group that attends changes from month to month depending on availability but we've had anywhere from 4 to 12 people at places and a good spectrum of temperature preference. The majority like medium, some medium rare and some well done(I don't get that but whatever). The biggest knock every where we've been has been either a lack of consistency in cooking to order or not cooking it to order at all. One place we went, we were all given a choice of pink or no pink, all 6 people choice pink and not one of us had any pink in our burgers. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon? Is it a fear of litigation, poor grill management, or just inconsistency of what medium is? What brought this up was, at Jake's I've always had it cooked right, but the night we were there for our burger club half the table(12 people) got things cooked correctly the other half(all med-rare or med) had them overcooked.

Bring the meat to close to room temp, use a seasoned cast iron skillet (also salt the pan too), get it blazing hot, about hockey puck sized patties around 1/3 of lb., 80/20...3-4 minutes a side, finished a few minutes in 250* oven.
Toppings: the classic, good sliced american cheese, kosher pickles, yellow mustard, shredded lettuce, few red onions. Toasted bun, that is not too big, but large enough to hold everything together.

Totally agree with the method. I use a cast iron pan on the grill side burner. I like a petty closer to 1/2 pound, and just let them rest. no need for the oven. Use homemade pickles, leaf lettuce, a tomato slice...and the bun is critical. Nothing manufactured. Gotta be fresh from bakery. Lately been partial to Sheboygan style hard rolls. Perfect size and texture.
On that note, bun is the biggest reason (among others) I am not particularly fond of jakes burgers. I think its rather average.

I ate at Solly's a couple of months ago for the first time in about 30 years. Not nearly as good as I remembered. There was so much melted butter on it that it fell apart when I tried to pick it up and left a lake of grease on my plate. They need a much lighter hand with that.
