Title: Let's hope Dick Strong will buy out Wojo's contract soon....
Post by: duanewade on November 19, 2014, 07:43:14 AM
I was holding my nose last night.

Juan Anderson bringing up the ball with Carlino?????

OSU full court press and zone completely dictated the game and we never tried to counter it by attacking it or speeding up the game with our athletes????

Speaking of athletes....our two most talented players in Duane Wilson and Deonte Burton who's talent we need to showcase instead ride the bench and then play sparingly in a walk up offense.

Team has no fight and fumbled dunks and break away lay-ups?????

Defensive breakdowns all night????

Even had the horrible color announcer (who wouldn't shut up) making excuses for Wojo saying we have only 9 scholarship players even though our bench is full of top 100 players and most teams only go 7 to 8 in their rotation.

Maybe next year we'll have Heldt bring up the ball against a full court zone and keep Duane and Deonte on the bench and bring them in only if we want to catch up and avoid getting totally embarassed like we were last night!!!!!!

I'd like to think you meant to use teal Duane, but my guess is you couldn't figure out how to do that from your mom's basement.

Hooo Boy. Here we go again. Lot's of insight in the above analysis.. Anderson: clueless on D. De. Wilson: standing on perimeter passing the ball around there is not productive. Dua. Wilson: should be getting all Derrick's minutes; he can drive, shoot. is quicker, and a better disher. Bane: has defensive lapses but can provide scoring.

Hope Wojo can sort this out.

wow - I was significantly happier with last nights OSU game than last years....

not happy on the Defensive breakdowns - but they can work on that...

getting Fischer should help immensely

getting DU Wilson more playing time should help immensely...

found a new poster to put on ignore

I was about to ask why there were so many "complain about the complainers" posts since almost everyone was even-keeled after the game and there weren't really any crazy overreactions.

Then I read this.

Lots of examples that make FULLY judging after 5 years a fool's errand, too (Wooden, Coach K, etc.). You don't FULLY judge a guy until he hangs up his whistle but you make judgments along the way nonetheless.

There are so many gems to choose from, but this is my favorite.  Because if I know anything about basketball, it's that if you have a bench "full" (all three of them?) of top-100 players, and if that's more than the average NCAA team's rotation, then you get to win every road game against top-20 opponents.

Wade, did you watch the game? Wojo yanked Burton as soon as he chucked up his ill advised three point attempt early in the shot clock. Forget holding your nose, you might do yourself a favor and stop watching.

We performed better than I expected, frankly.  Anything under 20 points to me was better than I would expect.  On the road against a good team, early in the season with a new coach.  I didn't expect too much.

One of the best analyses I've read so far.  Juan Andersen bringing up the ball was agonizing.  He had difficulties with the press.  Not to mention, the press wasn't that ferocious either.  Teams are going to watch this tape and play pressure on MU until a solution is found.  This means Derrick Wilson will be controlling the ball, which limits the offense.

Team played untethered when it came to fundamentals.  This may have been one of the worst performances in terms of fundamentals in a long time.  We shot ourselves in the foot with poor plays.  The missed dunk and Steve Taylor's dribble off the knee were a disgrace.  No excuses there.  That's on the coach.  There definitely seemed to be a lack of discipline, especially on defense.  How do you let a team shoot 65% with an effective FG% of 75%?  Serious Red Flag.  You won't win any games giving that up.

People seem to be ok that it was closer than expected.  The thing that isn't realized is that Ohio St. is overrated and was a good matchup for Marquette.  Ohio St. made a lot of mistakes that were self inflicted.  They're going to have a tough time in the Big Ten where big men are aplenty.

Guy joins the board at 2AM last night and every post is a critical, negative post that doesn't take into account any variables that deal with small sample size. Red flags everywhere. He very well could be an MU alum and has read the board for 5 years before joining. Maybe. I dunno.

The chronic negative talk on this board is really getting old. Of course half the board never expected this because they are negative about everything...now we are doing well and they are somewhat happy and very surprised yet are still claiming the sky will be falling very soon.

I for one know we'll probably have some losses but love Buzz Williams and love what he has done this far and think great days are ahead of us for both this year and after.

My glass is half full and I'm not conceding any losses until they happen!

So I'm guessing somewhere along the line he stopped being a glass half full realist

I do not know for sure, but I think this year's Ohio St. team is better than last year's Ohio St. team. Given that and the fact it was the first road game, we did a lot better than last year. There are things we need to work on, but we have to remember we have very little returning experience. Learn to be patient as our players learn how to play.

If duanewade was our coach, we could probably blow Kentucky out of the gym. First, he would change the school colors to red and white. Obvious cocky Badger from an over rated Big 10-14  conference. I clearly remember the days when Bucky was worse in every sport than even Northwestern. Go away ! MU will be back next year. Lots of learning and growing to do this year but led by an awesome coach who will take us to the next level....and love Milwaukee and what MU stands for along the way. While the VT cowboy enjoys the remaining three years of his basketball career that will end in a significant number of losses and/or disgrace from out of control recruiting violations.

This, coming from the guy who has a Jay Cutler picture.  I never blamed the coaching staff for him dribbling it off his knee.  My point is that he should have passed the ball before making a stupid decision to drive to the hoop.  A pass first mentality comes from the coach.  Taylor doesn't get it yet.  He's looking for highlight reel moments.  There isn't a team mentality here...... yet.  And that is blamed on the coaches until that culture is changed.

That's not smart basketball.  He can't handle the ball and had a guard wide open for an easy deuce.  That's not fundamental basketball.  And why do you use the excuse..... The layup wasn't uncontested.  There was a defender waiting under the hoop.  You must not know much about basketball.  It's taught at about middle school level that the big men aren't supposed to handle the ball, dribbling from half court to the hoop.  Why?  Because stupid things like it bouncing off your leg are prone to happen.  Always pass it to the guard.  Fundamentals.  I can tell you've never played anything higher than intramurals.

A most welcome addition to the board = the know-it-all Ellisum...

Record time to make it to Ignore < 20 posts...

I would rather know something than pretend I did.  Let's face it.... there's a lot of people in here that are uneducated when it comes to basketball.

cmon brandx, why would someone ever want to drive to the basket for an uncontested layup?

In all seriousness though the ignore function has been great the past day.

Yeah, I think he is going to join Willie on the bench.

Not only are we an expert on the flaws in our new coaching staff after one game but anyone that disagrees is, well an idiot. You have been truly blessed with great knowledge and wisdom. Possibly you should consider becoming the new head coach at MU or with such diplomatic skills run for higher office. Destined for greatness.

I didn't say anyone was an idiot.  I said that it's fundamentally wrong for a big man to dribble half the length of the court to score a basket when there's a guard open on the wing for an easy layup.  For some reason, that strikes a chord with people.  Of course, when you think a big man should dribble it that far, well ..... I can instantly gather that the person doesn't know a whole lot about basketball.  Arguing that point is just blasphemous.  That person deserves to be shut down for being ignorant.  But hey ... if you feel comfortable being in the majority who don't know how the game is played - that's cool bra.  Safety in numbers ....... I get it.

Well, Wojo does have the worst record of any Marquette coach in the past 25 years. :)

Another non basketball board I belong to has a thread for posts like the OPs. It's called ' Bugger, I'm drunk!'

I thought it was contested because there was a defender waiting under the basket? Why would it be an easy lay-up for the guard when there was a defender waiting under the basket but not for the big man?

I seem to recall an invisible defender under the basket too. Thought I was the only one who saw him!

Howdy Ellisium,

Welcome to Scoop. I think you may have gotten off on the wrong foot here. Our community is opinionated, passionate, and gets into dumb pissing matches a lot but its our community, and we have a certain amount of respect for each other when posting. Not much mind you, but some. We generally tend to avoid statements like "you deserve to be shut down for being ignorant." And it may not be a fair standard, but generally the members who have been here for longer can get away with that more than the new ones. First impressions and all that.

You are absolutely right that the smart play in the game was for Taylor to dump it off to JJJ. We just don't feel it was the catastrophe you seem to think it was or that it was indicative of a poor coaching job by Wojo. Players get caught up in the moment and sometimes make dumb plays. Taylor had a wide open lane to the basket and 9/10 times, he probably finishes that dunk. This was unfortunately that 10th time. Again, dumping it to JJJ would have been the smarter play, but Taylor trying to take it up himself was one of the smaller of several issues our team had last night.

Of course, I might not be accounting for the "grassy knoll" defender that you mentioned.

Welcome to the board Elysium. I hope you become a productive member of te scoop community. Unfortunately, if you continue on your current path I think your stay will be shortlived. Either from you ragequitting or the Mods' almighty banhammer (In the banhammer we trust).

The game itself was not as close as the score indicated.  If you are being honest, there was no point after the first 12 minutes or so in this game where you thought to yourself, "we might win this" or even "we might take this to the wire."  If they weren't so hot from three, I think they would have just beaten us inside.  Ohio State's zone is not good right now.  It is very much a work in progress and will be a lot more formidable in February.

Look, there is little reason to think we are going to be great this season.  I am looking forward to watching the development of our players.  There is reason for optimism because these guys can play.  We don't have all the positions covered, though.  Last season was rough because we were watching an older team die.  This season will be much less so because though we will struggle, we are watching a young team find its legs.

With regards to Steve Taylor, as with most things in life, his game was a mixed bag of good and bad.  He wisely found the open seams in the defense and got himself in good position to score.  Even though he was 9-14, he missed some very easy shots.  At the same time, he made a couple of the more difficult ones with good pump fakes.  Not getting that ball to a guard when he dribbled off his knee was a very bad mistake.  Forget guard and forward for a moment, you should be pushing the ball ahead whenever possible.  Wouldn't blame coaching for that, however, as Taylor should have known that since junior high.  He is not a defensive stopper in the paint.  I think he has a good sense for rebounding and good hands, but didn't have a great rebounding night.  I know he's a junior, but he is getting his first real chance at extended play and will be a work in progress.

Biggest disappointments for me were Dawson not getting off the bench and how little and ineffectively Burton played.  It is only one game, though, as far as Burton is concerned.  We've got 9 guys, but 7 of them are guard/wings, so even on a short bench Dawson is caught in a numbers game.

He has good width and strength so that does help him play bigger.  Buzz's aversion to recruiting big men was my biggest qualm with him.  I just never understood why he never put more of an emphasis on finding a couple of sheriffs to guard the hoop.
