Tony Benford conundrum
« on: March 29, 2019, 06:44:59 PM »
Career assistant.  Poor record as a head coach.  Steps into a difficult situation with a good team.   Does getting to the sweet 16 under these circumstances help him get another head coaching gig?  Should LSU just promote him?

Kinda reminds of the Steve Fisher deal at Michigan...which ended up with a mix of good and bad.

IMHO LSU should give Tony a shot as long as he has good relationships with the administration.

The big difference is that Fischer is actually an excellent coach.

The guy went 2-2 with a team that won the SEC, a conference that had 2 top 2 seeds.

Apparently he will be joining Buzz at A&M

It will be interesting to see his staff. Chew left A&M months ago, wonder if he will take advantage of being unemployed to recruit unfettered before rejoining his old boss. Maybe Benford, Chew, & either McNeilly or Fulce?

I bet that whole crew is there. Buzz usually as many suits as jerseys on his bench these days.

I think Chew to Buzz's staff was sealed when he left A&M's bench back in January.  My guess is that he's been "hanging out" in gyms all over Texas since then.  I wouldn't doubt that Chew was the go-between between Buzz and the AD down there.

I think Chew had some marital issues.

Fisher wasn't at the time though. He was still an unproven assistant whose last job had been at a directional Michigan school.

Benford's assistant pedigree is probably better, but you have that bad tenure at North Texas and he's a decade older.

Didn't Chew do something similar before Buzz took the VT job? I remember hearing something like this, where an assistant could talk to anyone because he wasn't officially part of any college staff at the time.

No, Fisher was an excellent recruiter (thanks to Ed Martin’s thousands). He has 4 first round picks on that 1989 team. He got badly out coached by Westhead in the 1990 tourney then bought the Fab Five and sat back and watched the do their thing. Once that group left he didn’t make it out of the first round.
