7.2 Earthquake in Haiti
« on: August 14, 2021, 11:07:51 AM »
God bless those people.  You talk about a country that has suffered hardships?  Good grief.   Hopefully this isn't as bad as 2010.

Less populated area, but with a tropical storm headed their way, it will be a challenge.

Awful.

@AP: At least 304 people are now confirmed dead, with another 1,800 injured, after a powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southwestern Haiti, with widespread damage reported. The epicenter of the quake was about 78 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince. http://apne.ws/l7n3PKJ

I don't think people realize the insane amount of suffering these people have endured since the 2010 earthquake.  And it goes well beyond the 13+ Billion dollars that were both stolen or misused.  This is a island that has probably lost well over a million people in the last 10 yrs and perhaps closer to 1.5m .  The UN brought in Cholera after the earthquake which was basically glossed over.   We just have to hope this isn't that bad and they don't get slammed by a hurricane the next 8 weeks.  We and the International community have completely failed this country and it's truly a tragedy.

What France has done to that country is abhorrent.

Horrible.  All I will say is that I would encourage people to read a bit about Hatian history (if they haven't already) and why it warrants our attention regardless of their frequent natural disasters.

It was most Western governments, including the United States.

The death toll is up over 1,300 now.

I know a guy who was down there in 2010, he said the amount of corruption was crazy. Equipment and supplies were held at the port until the payoffs could be made.  Months of delays.

Correct, however was referring to France, well into the mid 20th century.

I know that there are a lot of conflicting reports about Digicel.  They have made billions in Haiti and I think Jamaica the past 20 yrs.  On the surface they appear to have been quite charitable but I have no idea what to believe.   How to donate is difficult, you can't trust anyone from any organization.

The Revolutions Podcast did a exceptional series on the Haitian Revolution that I cannot recommend highly enough. Also, Behind the Bastards Podcast just did a couple episodes on Papa Doc/Baby Doc.
