Solid field. 5 of the 8 went to postseason.
-
Funny reading the replies to the tweet. St. Bonaventure fans seem to think they're gonna just walk through this field. ;D
-
The only two schools 100+ in NET ranking this year were Temple and Elon.

Do they know something we don't? Like is their team returning every single major player?

The same St. Bonaventure that didn't play a single P6 team until the NCAAT and then proceeded to get trounced by 15? That St. Bonaventure?
-
The Bonnies had a good team this year. I would expect the Bonnies to be competitive next season as well.
The Big 10 for example (whom many consider the best league this year) struggled in the NCAA's. One could also mention that the top 4 or so of the Big 10 had very limited success non-conference this year.

One of my high school friends is a St. Bonnie's alum and big college BB fan and will be hoping for a Marquette-St. Bon matchup somewhere in this tournament.

Solid blend of a few good teams and some bunnies. Should be just challenging enough for our squad.

Kinda wanted a reason to go to Charleston. This seems like a good one.

Looks like it would be a fun tournament . I may go to it. Huggie Bear in the field

Used to see the Original Huggie Bear every week when our kids played soccer at the same time .
Always called him Huggie Bear, He was very nice and friendly

Great city. Awesome eats, and lots to see.
Mrs. 82 and I will be there ... along with close friends of ours who went to St. Bonaventure, so I really need Shaka's heroes to beat the Bonnies if we play 'em!
Should be a great weekend.

Chaleston is awesome. My wife and I just went a few weeks ago for a weekend getaway. Awesome food. Very walkable. Good looking ladies. Definitely worth it - tho the no direct flight thing kind of sucked. May try to convince her to go back for this.

I am probably much closer to college aged than you are, so that may be part of it. Regardless, what I said is definitely accurate, at least as it compares to the midwest. Find out for yourself!

A number of good self guided walking tours of Charleston. A few years ago we rented a B&B across the bridge in Mt. Pleasant over New Years. Did the walking tour and froze but had a great time.
Sweetgrass weaving would be a nice gift for the household that is pretty unique to the area.

To bad that Abilene Christian did not get invited to this tournament. Imagine Shaka finding out he was playing them in the first round again.

There is no such thing as the “P6.” I laugh when I see AAC teams with signs reading “P6” on yard markers and the goalpost pads during football games.

I use P6 to refer to the BE and the football P5. Others on this board do the same. So there is a such a thing even it is our limited universe.

I sometimes use Power 5/Big East when referring to basketball leagues here, otherwise I use Power 5. I have noticed several people here use Power 6. I understand why. It isn't something I use. (I don't care what other people say or use.)
-

Scoop isn't the only place it's used. I did a quick Google search, and it came up regularly on Bleacher Report, Reddit discussions and other fan message boards. Just as examples, here's one from the UVa hoops message board just a few days ago, another from a Reddit discussion last month, and one from an Arkansas hoops message board last year:
https://virginia.sportswar.com/mid/15324401/board/basketball/
https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/lgzyad/best_conference_after_the_p6_the_aac_or_a10/
https://forums.wholehogsports.com/t/why-not-sec-vs-rest-of-p6-annual-challenge/34809
None of these is any more or less 'official' than our references here on Scoop, but they show that we aren't even close to the only ones who regularly use it.
-

The AAC in football is a distant 6th behind the top 5 conferences every season.
The Big East in basketball is 3rd-5th among the top 6 conferences every season.
Comparing the two doesn't really make sense.

Exactly. I resisted calling it the P6 for awhile. But then, year after year after year, the Big East was rated higher than 2-3 of the P5 leagues, and always above any non-P5 league.
So it simply made sense to say the BEast is part of the P6.
But sure, there is no such thing as the Power 6. Of course, in basketball, there's no such thing as the Power 5, either, as it's a reference to the football conferences.

Especiallly when you consider that 1-2 teams recently in the Final Four each year do not come from those conferences.

Some of the other tourney fields were announced today:
-
Rosters far from settled but here's what T-Rank thinks of the field:
St. Bonaventure #19
Clemson: #47
West Virginia: #64
Ole Miss: #71
Marquette (w/ Garcia): #72
Boise State: #81
Temple #115
Elon: #146
No real dogs in the tournament, one clear favorite, and a bunch of other teams ranked fairly close to each other. Not a bad place for a young but promising team to get some experience in.

Agreed. Who would have said that back in the late 90s early 2000s? We hated that guy.
-
If I were to guess at the matchups, I'd say...
West Virginia vs Elon
Marquette vs Ole Miss
St. Bonaventure vs Temple
Clemson vs Boise State
I think the organizers will build for a WVU/Bonnies final. If that doesn't work out, this seems like the best shot of getting power teams through to the final if one of the favorites stumbles. And I know T-Rank has Clemson ahead of WVU, but I think they'll still trust Huggy ahead of anyone else in the field.
Ultimately, I could see the Marquette/Ole Miss/Clemson spots being a bit of a round-robin. One of them will likely play Boise, the other two will likely match with each other.

Maybe not, but the Bonnies could have a number next to their name. That alone would make them a draw, especially against a power conference team.

A draw to whom?
#21 St Bonaventure vs. Clemson....only diehards give a sh$t about that.
I would watch......but I don’t know if that draw is what the network carrying this tournament championship game on their airwaves wants in a preseason tournament.

What is with all the St. Bonaventure Love. It is not like the second coming of Bob Lanier is playing for them.
Who did they beat that was worth anything last year?
MU will do well in this tournament.

It's Feast Week. People tune into ranked teams. It's one of the best times to get a look at teams that are good but the common fan is unfamiliar with and won't likely get much of a look at until March.

So at least one of the other basketball gals in my group and I are seriously looking at going - looking at hotels and Airbnb’s now - anyone made arrangements yet? Will there be gatherings like at the Big East tourney? I’ve signed up for ticket info from the tourney website.
Holiday tournaments are new to me. At the Big East we pretty much just bought off stubhub. Is a similar plan good for a tourney like this?

I’d like to hear answers to your questions, so hopefully the holiday-tourney-experienced Scoopers will chime in.
We’re going and already have reserved our Airbnb. Staying about 6-7 blocks from arena and near where lots of restaurants and bars are.
Can’t wait!

There are usually gatherings. One main event with some pre game ones as well. Post game at team hotel bar.

MU82, might I ask the general area of your Airbnb? I’ve been to Charleston once but my recollections are a bit hazy.

I had a rental credit from Covid, booked a 15 minute walk from the arena. One block off the north end of King Street.
Never been to Charleston, looking forward to it.

Just google-mapped it to remind myself where we are. We're fairly near the MUSC medical facility, about a 20-minute walk from the arena.
-
Here are the “official” tournament hotels, with two being in Mt. Pleasant (not convenient IMO). Not sure where MU will be based yet. King Street is where a lot of the hotels, bars, restaurants and arena are so anything on or off of there…but all very walkable or a quick ride share to the historic district.

Yeh I saw the list, we are thinking of booking something cancellable right now just to have it. I may have stayed in the Homewood a couple nights the one time I was there before ( we were on a bike trip that started in Charleston but went out two days earlier) and it was well- located. I agree about Mt. Pleasant, would need a car there. A former co-worker actually lives there.

The Courtyard on the official list is not really a pleasant walk to the arena. Hopefully, the team stays closer. You have to cross a very busy street that is almost a highway at some point. The most direct route has you walking along that highway for a good chunk of the way. The easier cross puts you a few minutes further walk. But it is a nice place, as is the full service Marriott. That was the team hotel for the Carrier Classic. But not really walkable.
The Embassy suites is the old Citadel. Interesting, historical place. As a Marriott guy, I do like the Courtyard Downtown near the arena.
-
I’ll take a look at some of these factors. I figure we’ll only be walking to the arena a few times ( we love MU of course, and we like basketball but not enough to go to all the games ) so being more walkable to the other things in Charleston is probably more important for us. Right now it looks like 2/5 of our basketball gals group will be heading there.

OMG! One of the two times I traveled in 2020 we stayed at an Embassy Suites in Pittsburgh. The wife and I remarked how COVID restrictions had awfully reduced ES's famous breakfast buffet to two guys handing out paper bags with fruit & yogurt in it.
-
Like most southern states, South Carolina was fairly early to ease Covid restrictions. I'd be surprised if the Embassy Suites in Charleston isn't back to full operations ... but a quick call to them by those interested could end all doubt.

I say this as someone who is on the cautious side of the covid pandemic measures. If we aren't back to normal by November, we will have far more important things to worry about than free (albeit yummy) breakfasts.
On a side note, the Residence Inn family stayed at in Orlando was back to full breakfasts, such as theirs are.

The Charleston brackets are to be released Thursday. Based on T-Rank projections for next season, here are the possible seeds:
1. Bonnies (16 in T-Rank nationally)
2. WVU (32)
3. Clemson (48)
4. Ole Miss (67)
5. Boise State (68)
6. Marquette (87)
7. Temple (119)
8. Elon (176)
If this holds, MU gets Clemson. That said, this is a pretty balanced tournament.
For reference, I looked at Haslam to compare win (year end) projections with MU's team from last year and MU would still have been a six seed from a season-ago. ESPN may say differently when these are released Thursday. However, this should be a parity tournament but with less downside or upside on the NET ratings I would say versus other Thanksgiving tournaments we've played in: Hit it straight down the fairway.

Good comment, Dr. B.
Also, discounted ticket presale starts tomorrow and runs through Friday. Mrs. 82 wants to just get the better seats, which are closer to the court and have backs, and be done with it. So that's what we'll do. They're pretty darn cheap anyway -- $158. I tend to agree with her that it's not worth trying to do Stubhub the day before the tournament in an attempt to save only a few bucks.
-
Nads, you pw'd, hey?
-
Okay so the $158 seats have backs, the others are just like bleachers?
We’re really only interested in hitting the MU games but I might make the executive decision to go ahead and buy as well, I don’t think we want to end up in the bleachers.

I am projecting MU to win The 2021 Charleston Classic. Perfect field of opponents for us this year.

Yeah, in presale, the better seats are only $50 more for the entire event. Seems an easy decision.

Nads, you pw'd, hey?
Yes, I do show signs of weakness by actually asking my wife's opinion on things. Crazy, nu?

Yes. All 12 games. $13.17 per game or $52.67 per MU win.

I’m thinking maybe I could sell the sessions we don’t care about.

Clemson fans, being local, would be your best bet as they are most apt to look for single game tickets as SEC football will be their interest (this tournament takes Saturday off for CFB). WVU fans would be next is my guess.
The basketball only school fans will buy the all-game package.
-
Just bought my tickets, as did our St. Bonnie friends who are gonna meet us in Charleston.
Looking forward to several fun days in a great town with friends we haven't seen since before the pandemic. And obviously hoping Shaka's lads turn a few heads ... and in a good way!
The event is releasing the bracket tomorrow. Curious to see who we'll play first and what other teams are on our side of the bracket.

Something for the college hoops junkies: A decade ago, Shaka Smart led VCU on a memorable Final Four run and, after an up-and-down tenure at Texas, he gets a fresh start at Marquette. This event will be an early look at a group that will rely on a multitude of new faces, including Maryland transfer Darryl Morsell.

Bought our tickets. I hate having to register for everything these days.
I was at the VCU first and second round games in Chicago the year they went to the FF. Their fans had a really great cheer, we were rooting for them.

They usually sell by each session at a later point.
-

Yes. the website says individual session sales start in October. They also cautioned that the last 3 times they held the tournament with fans in the stands, lower seats with backs were sold out before individual tickets went on sale. I have no way of knowing if that's the truth or just a way to get advance sales, but that's what it says.

Is anyone heading to Charleston this year? If so, any tips on areas to stay or places to eat for those who have been there before? First time for us…My wife and I (and 3 small kids) plan to attend.
For those of you who have never attended a holiday tournament, I highly recommend it. The Orlando Invitational was incredible.

Merged with original topic. A few suggestions earlier in the thread.

Big fan of the Charleston food scene, have a few places I love. I like to stay at Restoration on King.
My fave food spots:
Fast and French
Leyla Lebanese
Husk (even if you can only get in for lunch, it’s worth it)
Queen Street Grocery
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
Hannibal’s Kitchen
Went to the Old Slave Mart, the Battery, and Fort Sumter the last time there.

The Charleston Marriott is very nice. Courtyard Historic District also nice and I believe arena is right there.

21Jump and ATL ... thanks muchly for the restaurant suggestions. We hope to eat some good grub!
Also, Edmunds Oast is one of my favorite breweries in the southeast, so we're looking for a few tasty beers, too.

I'll be there.

I have heard VERY good things about that place from friends that frequent Charleston. Honestly, the way this quarter has started, might take the wife and I down for the games (and for her, a game or two) and debrief for a bit.

Well, there are "home" wives and "away" wives. Not so sure how all of Scoop rolls, so I wanted to be inclusive.

The Wentworth Mansion (attached) is beautiful for special occasions. But pricey. I would recommend it for a night if so.

I’ll be there (Liberty Place by Hilton Club). Where do we watch the Vikings beat the Packers?!
If we lose, then win, which may be what the odds say will happen, we’d tip Sunday right around the time the Vikes kickoff. Any other win/loss combo and we should be free from conflict with the football game.
Must win on Thursday!!
PS- are there any boat tours that are worthwhile?

I've been out to Ft. Sumter...it was o.k. Not sure about others.
Also, you can tour U.S.S. Yorktown if you are into that kind of boat tour.

I always took my kids everywhere, not sure how old yours are, but a few places are: FIG, The Ordinary, Hyman’s Seafood (never been personally), and Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. There are so many little places to pop into, you will definitely have options. I also love to walk everywhere and eat sitting on street curbs, so I’m never really at a loss.

Awesome, thanks! Our kids are 4, 2 and 8 months :o
We bring them everywhere as well (besides very fine dining). I appreciate the recommendations!

Your children may be a little young, or they may hate animals, or they may specifically hate cats -- all of which are acceptable reasons to disregard this message -- but there is a little place just down the street (1 or 2 blocks maximum) from TD called the Pounce Cat Cafe. My two girls loved that place, much to my dismay, when they were younger and it became a mandatory stop when in Charleston.
It is not really a place to eat, but you can grab a glass of wine or a beer, and then you pay per the half hour or hour (part goes to the local humane society, if I recall) and you can hang out with adoptable cats. A good change of pace for children, if even a touch pricy.
FYI: There may be an age restriction. My girls started going when they were about 6 or 7.
Otherwise, a bit further away, Dap's is great for breakfast and super kid friendly; Basic Kitchen is decent too. After that, you are probably 5-10 blocks from decent children friendly places. The Marina Variety Store is decent, on the water, and relatively budget friendly, with a kid's menu. We would go there on occasion, but its probably a good 10 city blocks or half-hour walk from the TD arena area . There was some pizza place the name of which I cannot recall that is always good on the family side of things.
Hope this helps. Enjoy Charleston. It is a favorite spot of our family. But for some other trips this year, we would have definitely considered heading down.

Wish I could go. Wasn't in the cards this year.
Charleston is lovely. Was just there in the spring. Check out 167 Raw if you like seafood - wow it was good! We ended up going 2x in a long weekend it was so good. The food in that town is top notch.

My son and I will be there for Thursday and Friday. May go to one of the Alumni gatherings if schedule works out.

What’s up with the liquor stores closing at 7p tho??

Perfect. We’ll be at one Friday afternoon, after we hit the aquarium. (And make a quick run to the Kiawah pro shop.)
-
We ate at Edmund Oast last night after rolling into town, could easily do kids there.
Will be walking around downtown today, I’ll update if we see anything.
Heads up on Kiawah, if you’re not on property I was told you need a tee time or restaurant reservation to get on property.

One of the MANY reasons I am bummed about not being able to go to this event is that I was really looking forward to going to Edmund's Oast. I love their beer, and I wanted to hang out there. Next time ...

Looking for a dinner spot tonight.

Bonnies up by 6 over Boise State with a minute left.
-
Boise made Bonnies work, but Bonnies played very well down the stretch -- really got after it on D -- and pulled it out. Both teams looked very well coached during the time I watched.
-
I would love to see the Bonnies on Sunday. They struggle when their key players get into foul trouble and we are excellent at drawing fouls. That coupled with our ability to pressure against a team with a short rotation makes me really like that potential matchup.

Well… Made it to Charleston. Stayed in Knoxville yesterday (From Wisconsin). Literally drive into parking garage at hotel and start hearing metal grinding on the car. Sitting at an auto-repair shop 1 hour 20 min before tip….Wish us luck….

As an FYI to anyone who is considering. Had no issues getting out to Kiawah. Just told them at the gate I was going to the pro shop at the Ocean course and they gave me a pass.

Funny reading the replies to the tweet. St. Bonaventure fans seem to think they're gonna just walk through this field. ;D
Yeah, they barely beat a weak shooting Boise St. team. Also could this be a pre-conference tournament run like the 2k tournament a couple years years back.

Down 10 to Clemson at the half isn't really reaffirming their shot at running through this tourney.

This is a team of adults. They aren't a bunch of 18-year-olds who haven't been in these situations. And they're well-coached.
Bonnies might not win the game -- though I think they will -- but it's not very surprising they came back to take the lead. I've been texting back and forth with one of my best friends, a St. Bon alum, and I had to talk him off the ledge a couple times!
-
Schmidt outcoached Brownell on the final possession and Bonnie players executed perfectly.
Not sure why the Clemson PG didn't just take the layup. Would have made it a 1-point game with about 7-8 seconds left, and there would still have been a chance.
I like St. Bonaventure's mental toughness, the pace they play, and their experience.

LOL. From the start, we settled for threes too quickly. Didn't penetrate often, which led to worse looks from the arc and didn't allow us to get them into any real foul trouble. I don't believe any of their guys had more than 1 first half foul.
The other thing the Bonnies did well was pushing the pace. They got into the front court quickly so we couldn't establish our press. That coupled with not enough made basketball meant we could never really get to doing what we wanted to do.
