Sorry, this may be a topic for the Superbar -- feel free to move it if so.
I recently changed my name from indymufan to my real name & face, and it made me curious about this question.
No big deal, but was just curious as to the reason -- protecting identities? Is it easier to criticize a screen name? Just what's always been done? More fun to be a screen name?
-
I do use my real name.
Although some here use my nickname: Sir Larry.
-
I don't use mine because I don't need other Scoopers googling me or creeping on my Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. I have already caught at least one person doing this.
I have revealed my identity to a few Scoopers over PM and I have referred to my real first name in posts a few times. I have shared enough information about myself that you could figure out who I am if you are really hellbent on knowing. But I am going to at least make you work for it.
-
I don't use mine because the username affords me a much greater level of anonymity when acting like a pompous, entitled a-hole.

Ditto.
-
A poignant and probing question - there are pros in some circumstances, and negatives in many others - been a problem ever since the early days of the internet when chat rooms were all the rage, and likely in other mediums before that - really an existential question - in the last 25 years its been possible for folks to have two conceptions of themselves - the real and the digital - sadly people are paying less and less attention to their incarnate selves and their relationship to the physical world - what that's doing to our brains is perhaps getting even less attention -
-
Whether I use bilsu or Bill Portz, most posters still would not know who I am.
-
I'm proud of my past work at Ziggy's and Ziggymania.
Besides, who do you think gave Ziggy the line "you like-ah the small breast?" for every order of chicken?

Who's Bill Portz?

Who's Bill Portz?
An insider???
-
Just for y'all's info, F*ckin's real name is Jack Mehoff.
-
indymufan's real name is Maura Day??? Not what I would have guessed.
-
On a related note, I know that a lot of Scoopers have changed their usernames in the last few weeks.
For those of us who might not have been paying close attention at the time, would any of you mind letting us know what your old name was? I like keeping all the pompous a-holes straight in my mind.

Thanks for pointing that out, Ben Jerkin.

Oh, you're a female. Didn't know.
Like others have said, my name is an offshoot of my surname.

I thought she was originally MikeDeanesGlasses.

I was thought you were a male stripper who specialized in dancing at college reunions.

I always wonder if Melissa Smooth is a real name. Doubtful.
-
It's an interesting question, especially since I don't use a username for the Scrambled Eggs podcast.
To be honest, I do like not knowing who people are because to a certain extent it frees me from biases I might have had that aren't relevant to a basketball conversation.
As an example, I knew one poster here in college and thought he was just the biggest annoyance and idiot. As a result whether he has cogent points or not I tend to dismiss them out of hand. Is that my problem, absolutely, but I like being able to divorce "real life" from the MU basketball stuff here.
-
I like my anonymity. I don't trust any of you with my personal information.
Bunch of creeps.
-
Sharpie. Formerly morecowbell. Better know as Dennis Reynolds in the real world.
Not too worried about people knowing my real identity when posting about MU ball.
-
My last name is there. First name is Chris. Wholly original username, I know.
-
I like being able to divorce "real life" from the MU basketball stuff here.
You meant to say you like to divorce "real life" from things unrelated to Marquette basketball, of course
-

I don't use mine because I'm a creep. Somehow some posters have correctly guessed my last name, however.

Hopefully, you never have to change back to a username because you've discovered first hand why.
-
Say hi to your sister Deandre for me.
Funny thing is, my younger sisters name is Deanna. That's not a joke.

We knew that
In real life.
-
I've put my real name in posts. I don't have a problem with people knowing it. For me, posting on 3 different MU boards, it is just easier to stay with the same name on all 3.
-
My last name is Badgerhater......tough name to have when my work takes me to Madison.

Do you have a sister named Ima?
-
We knew that
All of us know that, a'ina?
-
There's something a little empowering about anonymity. Me -- I'm terribly introverted in real life. Pretty sure I've gone the last fifteen years without direct eye contact.
To be honest, I do like not knowing who people are because to a certain extent it frees me from biases I might have had that aren't relevant to a basketball conversation.
This is it more than anything. I know some of my buddies are on this board, and I have a lot of presuppositions about the way they think, argue, etc. Part of the fun of this board is knowing nothing more about the people here than the nuggets they provide in their posts.
-
Do you have a sister named Ima?
I have an F 15 buddy whose name is Jerry Cummin. Callsign Ima.
-
Do you have a sister named Ima?
2 very wealthy women in Houston who owned a property now called Bayou Bend had the names of
Ima Hogg and Ura Hogg.
-
Oh, you're a female. Didn't know.
Like others have said, my name is an offshoot of my surname.
To be honest, that's why I originally didn't use my real name --- didn't want to be taken less seriously as a female sports fan.

I am sure that as we speak, certain Scoopers are scouring the internet for a full body pic.

That's urban legend crapola. The Ima part is true, not the "Ura" part. I'm related to the Hogg's on my mother's side. Ima Hogg was the daughter of a Texas governor, and had no sisters. Or any brother with that name.
-
Why bother? Not sure there's any good that can come from it--nor any bad, but that brings me back to "why bother."

No need for the apostrophe anymore, Doc. The mods are now again allowing the Milwaukee expression that could not be written. See? Aina!
-

She should probably just use some other woman's full body pic, huh?
-
I'd make fewer dickish comments without anonymity, and I need that outlet. Anyway, the last name is there, and I am not Joe.

Manchap?

Heard that when I lived in Houston. Ima Hogg is still bad enough.

Maybe, in honor of Wojo, we need to change that to "enna".
The Dictionary of American Regional English, my bible for this blog, actually gives its preferred spelling as ainna, and calls it an "interrogatory exclamation," or a "tag question," meaning something you ask at the end of a sentence. The regional English dictionary, much of which is based on field work from many decades ago, points out that the word was found chiefly in German settlement areas – including St. Louis as well as Milwaukee. But the dictionary also cites one of its southeastern Wisconsin informants as saying that a slightly different pronunciation, enna, was the "Polish version of Milwaukee aina." It's not the only such word in the regional dictionary, which also describes "innit" (short for "isn't it") as a tag question in the Cheyenne Indian dialect of English, and in south-central Oklahoma. "You're going up north, innit?"

To me, it simple....its more fun. That's what Scoop is.
I've given out more than enough hints about myself over time. A good friend who recently joined, pegged me within a day based on my scoop name.
Its also fun to figure out your fellow alum too. I remember when I ID's JayBee at a Nike tournament....he was busted. I run into him now quite a bit and enjoy talking MU hoops with him.
Chicos gave out enough detail one day to ID him through LinkedIn. No big deal....just part of the fun.

Even Asian cultures us the interrogatory exclamation. The Japanese add "neh" to the end of questions to soften the impact for a culture that values the indirect. The Japanese also add "yo" to the end of statements, again to make them less threatening or accusing.
Throughout SE Asia Hokkien, Hakka, and Bahasa speakers add "lah" to the end of sentences for the same reason as the Japanese "yo" or the Milwaukee "aina." What's interesting is that the "lah" is added even when speaking English and intonation is used to convey different meanings - frustration, agreement, anger, dismay. In Indonesia, Bahasa speakers add the word "kan" to make statements more emphatic.
My son lives in Italy and speaks Italian. He pointed out that contemporary Italian is similar to Bahasa or Mandarin in that it is a unifying language. And like Bahasa, it has a fairly limited vocabulary which is why Italians have developed gesticulation, gesture, and motion to overcome the limitations of communicating in their language.
The human experience is far more similar than we credit. People seek the differences when the commonalities are more relevant.
-
I've never even really been curious about what anybody's name on here is. Not even for a second. If you told me I would probably forget it.
-

Thank you for fixing it for me ;D

I was going to throw out Italians, throwing "ma" at the end of a sentance.

You have to be talking about Kenosha ;D

Let me see if I understand. You want me to give my real name to some of the whack jobs that post on these boards?
-
My real name is Robert A. Wild of the Society of Jesus
-
??? I don't understand. My real name is being used.....
-
What I would find mildly interesting is for everyone to wear their MUScoop nametag at some future basketball event. For instance, chick and I were at Tuesday's awards event. Were any of you? Did we meet and not know it?
As to using my real name, I wouldn't be opposed. There are members of this board who know who I am simply because they knew me back in the day. There are other members of this board who are friends with my kids today and 'know' me as a result. Frankly, I don't think I have much to hide.
And now that 'Indy' is 'out', I guess there are three ladies on the board. Will wonders never cease.
-
Murs, I noticed you changed your avatar. Is that Maura's full body pic?
I lived in the Lighthouse and graduated in 1984. You've got a 1 in 10 chance of figuring out who I am. And no, my name isn't Pat McGroin or Haywood Jablomee.
-
Also, a few years back, one of our posters started calling people out by name when he was angry with them. And they hadn't posted their names, he just gleaned it from e-mail addresses.
-
I was at banquet/. I was wearing blue sport coat... ;)
-
I'm not actually Buzz Williams.
-
Not hard to figure out who I am if you're on campus. More than a few classmates have asked if I'm Bagpipingboxer/punchingpiper on here. Seeing as punching piper is also my twitter handle it's not very hard to figure it out.
I think I'd be pretty much the same without anonymity but then nobody would know I box or play the bagpipes and what fun is that?! (Seriously Irish or Scottish and need a piper hire within the MU community!)

Surprisingly I dont think people at school realize who I am on here. I drop hints too. I think only a couple of people on here know who I am.

Just to clarify -- I'm not saying that people people should or shouldn't use real names -- just a offering a topic for discussion.

Hi, I'm Dirk Diggler.

The only time I'm ever interested in the real identity of a poster is when s/he says something that seems to indicate that they were at MU at the same time as I. I've rediscovered one guy (Tower912) who was on my freshman floor in McCormick in 84-85, via one of those many threads where those of us who suffered through the Pop Sims debacle against UNC when we welcomed Al back to campus.
My username is my Mugrack mug number. Who remembers the Mugrack in the old Alumni Union? I spent many hours there, and not only because I was quite involved in ASMU at the time. I knew Scott Walker.
-
Here is my real name taken apart.
AAACDEGGHHIIJLLNORRS
-
I don't use my real name for reasons many on here have stated. I really don't want people looking me up, because you don't know what kind of crazy people are out there.
Some here I roughly know what they do/who they are from what they have posted…aka Chicos. Many of them I really wouldn't care too much if they knew who I am.
I'd even be open to meeting many people at a game/event.
The other reason is I find it very hard to adequately explain some ideas/concepts on message boards, which can lead to misguided opinions of people. In person it is much easier to convey meaning/intent and then one is less likely to offend or develop an incorrect reputation.

It's beyond tragic that I left campus without my mug. It is possibly the single possession from my college years that I'd most like to have. I won't mention my number; lets say it was low. I'd gladly donate $500 for an appropriate replica.

We probably know each other. I was McCormick 9th floor 1984 (home of the great flood) and then Tower 1985 (11th floor) where I kicked in my RA's door for no particular reason. Can't recall my mugrack no but the mug is in my office somewhere. I also knew Scott Walker. Still recovering from crime that was Bob Dukiet. I'm sure there are some out there who know me as I've given away my tickets on occasion. I once sat next to Crean's sister on a flight to San Diego where she offered up that Tom loves to fake bake whenever possible.
I enjoy the board for the information and focus on MU and have only a few times wondered if someone posting was someone I knew.
I would like to know how many former coaches posted on this site. I'm pretty sure we had Joanie Harbough-Crean on here during TC's last year.

I had an Ardmore Mug that I forgot. What's crazy is my wife and her roommates lived right above the bar but I of course forgot it.

The Two Petes from Rhinelander. They would end sentences with the expression, "Too yet?"
"You finish up that lab assignment, too yet?"
Cullen Vane was a wise ass from the NW Chicago burbs who went out of his way to torment the Two Petes. For a while the entire floor was ending every sentence with "too yet." Surreal when you look back at it.
