Anyone have suggestions for keeping an unruly beard a little more sophisticated? Not sure if you should/can just use product like meant for hair styling.

Get special beard stuff. Amazon has a lot of great reviews on products. Also, get a good beard trimmer - keeps you from looking like a crazy hippy. I personally have only been clean shaven twice in the past 4 years (perks of working at a brewery) and it's all about keeping it trimmed.

I am a fan of jojoba oil since I keep mine fairly short. It helps keep it soft and moisturized but also helps my skin under the beard. It's great oil for your face as it's about as close to the natural oil our skin makes as is found in nature. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019LTGOU

But I like to throw handfuls...

Everyone is different I guess. I use a $15 trimmer from Walgreens, wash it with my normal $5 shampoo in the shower, and always manage to look professional when I wear a beard in my white collar job.

Non-hipsters have worn beards without special product for thousands of years, so I just sort of question the need. No offense to Chili.

One pet peeve of mine when trimming up your beard. dont do the whole "shave an inch below your jaw all the way around." It looks red neck as hell and is doing it wrong.

1) take your index and middle finger, and rest it on your neck, beginning at the middle of your Adan's apple.
2) shave from that point down

That may not be what you were asking, but judging on the terrible beard trim jobs out there, it needed to be said

I'm considering a chin-strap beard.

Any thoughts?

If you do, do the 360* chin strap.

The shorter you keep it, the better.  The Duck Dynasty look is not sexy.

Have some patience, FFS.

Get a good electric razor with multiple beard trim depth attachments, Amazon is good, and a good Gillette or other multi-blade razor.  Razor on the throat, behind the jaw, and on the cheek bones.  I just use shampoo on the beard while I washing my lucious locks.  Hot water on the razor after the shower and I'm good to go.  Had a white collar job with the beard for 6 years with nothing but compliments.  Other than it makes me look older(I'd look 12 with out it) the primary reason to have a beard is its way easier to maintain than clean shaven

+1 on the oil.  I think it works better than shampoo/conditioner given the coarseness of whiskers.  It's also good for stopping beard dandruff (beardruff?) which can increase the likelihood of pimples and ingrown hairs.

Chick stopped wearing her Clay Matthews game-day shirt when he got all scraggly.  She's happier now that he's properly groomed again.

I've been using jojoba oil. Seems to help the skin quite a bit, but my beard still looks like sh1t.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.
