Ben Steele @BenSteeleMJS
Marquette is hiring Justin Gainey as an assistant coach. He was director of basketball operations for #mubb from 2014-17. Gainey was at Arizona the last two seasons.
-
Bringing him back from Arizona is a nice move.
-
Was he an assistant or DOBO at Arizona?
Welcome back. Talk Nico into skipping the draft and bring him with you please.
-
Nice, got the Arizona & west coast connection back with a known commodity

1000% untrue...But thanks for using hyperbole. This just feels "lazy" go with someone known, instead of potentially finding the biggest fish you possibly can. Maybe he kills it, and I hope he does, but someone more experienced with deep National recruiting ties was my preference. This is like a bunt single hire

A thread with great insight has been on BrewCity Ball for those interested along with details of who they pursued.

Who would you have preferred? Name some names.
Interesting side note ... Gainey was the lead recruiter at Santa Clara for highly sought transfer Trey Wertz.
-
They looked elsewhere.
I'm aware Fluffy...but I'd be willing to bet thousands of $$$ they didn't look at some of the top assistants in the country. Wanna take that bet?? As far as I know, they looked into one other guy, after that fell through they did the easy thing and hired Gainey. It's really that simple...to think it wasn't, is being naïve.

No actually you are being simple. I am sure Wojo had a number of inquires from others. How far he took some of those inquires, who knows? And you don't either.
So your little bet really can't be provded anyway.
Just another thing for you to bitch about.

But the one guy is a top assistant, so.
-
Guru. Since you are the basketball genius on this board. Please tell me Gainey's salary at MU and how it compares to the "top assistants" you wish we've gone after. And tell me how you know any of them would have even come. You know the answers so please share.
-
Justin is an excellent hire. Knows the program which is a plus. He is a well respected assistant who has gone back to work again for coaches where he had prior relationships three times now. That demonstrates that Head Coaches like what Justin brings to the table.

It's fine. It's just a title. Both report to Wojo.

He recruited for high level kids at Arizona, he now has experience. Not a bad hire, lets see what he can do!

Guru, it is in your best interest for a litany of reasons to come to the realization that Marquette is never going to be a top 5 program.

I've told you a million times not to exaggerate!

Agreed, Top 30 program yes, Top 5, do not see it unless Al walks through the door again, those days are over. Wojo is not Al, Buzz was the closest, and Crean was
fortunate to get Wade and 3 kids from Wisconsin that were pretty darn good.

Marquette is a great program.. Definitely top 25-30 type when you consider all program factors. It will never be a blue blood, and that is fine. Doesn't mean it can't be a really, really good program. Its been just that since the move to the Big East. But people like guru have standards that simply aren't realistic when your school is located in Milwaukee.

Johnson and Nelson were both Associate Head Coaches at the same time.

Agreed, who needs a coach who played PG in the ACC, and has been coaching PGs since? And shouldn't we have gone for a third assistant with East Coast recruiting ties?
-
Is it normal to have two associate heavy coaches? (Killings being the other)
Yes there will be a hunger games style fight to replace Wojo
-
I would be more excited about the hire if it was someone coming back from the staff after having success (if MU was actually winning tournament games during his previous time here), but seeing as there hasn't exactly been success under this current staff, I would have liked to see them bring someone in from outside of the "group" to try and bring in some new blood and new ideas.

Like Dwayne Killings? Like Stan Johnson?
-
Like the hire. Seems like a nice replacement for Stan. And he holds up the recruiting in the west and southwest.
-
Not hiring Chris Beard for this position shows how far Marquette has fallen. Reanimate Al’s corpse now
-
Interesting side note ... Gainey was the lead recruiter at Santa Clara for highly sought transfer Trey Wertz.
Fun fact: Wertz's dad covers high school sports for the Charlotte Observer. The dad had to write about the son quite often because the kid played on one of the state's best teams (Dotson, of Kansas, was a teammate). And generally, I thought he did a really good job of staying objective. That couldn't have been easy.
As for the choice of Gainey being the "easy" one ...
The "easiest" coaching choice at MU in the last several decades was promoting Buzz from assistant to head coach. That worked out horribly.
The hatred for Wojo is so deep in some that just about anything he does draws automatic criticism. When that's the case, there is zero credibility.
-
It appears to be a solid hire. He was a good player at NC State. Experienced coach coming back to familiar turf. AZ obviously liked him, which speaks well. He’ll help coach-up the guards.
-
You’d think he’d know from experience that Wojo allows a toxic culture in his program and that the only thing keeping the program somewhat together it’s left for Southern California. Maybe he figured he’d fill those shoes.
-

Why would top assistants in the country want to come to MU to take the second assistant position?

We can all assume the hottest girl in school won't go out with us, and that's probably fair...but unless you ask, you won't completely know for sure. And if you never ask and find out later on, she would have even though she was still with her old boyfriend at the time, you would regret it forever. If she says no, big deal, you were expecting her to. Nothing lost. You work down the list of hot girls until you have exhausted the list of hot chicks and have to move on to the average one's. They will always be there for you.

Some of us might have exhausted the hot chicks but it certainly wasn't from saying no

We just got an assistant from Sean Miller and Arizona - the only thing better would be to get one from Bill Self and Kansas!
Just win, baby!

It was a joke. I’m sure Gainey is fine.
But I would suspect (if they’re the least bit consistent, lol) that some of our more holier than thou posters would have a problem hiring someone off of Sean Miller’s staff.

Well heck, our head coach worked under Coach K, not exactly the best reputation. Our coach twice removed worked under Izzo. The whole darn sport is full of bad apples.
-
Yep - It’s hard to hire someone out of your network when no one wants to work with you.
Let's see. Two assistants were named head coaches in less than a year. How many programs can say that?

Some people's infatuation with Brian Wardle to be MU's next Coach is just baffling to me. Absolutely baffling.
-
Some people's infatuation with Brian Wardle to be MU's next Coach is just baffling to me. Absolutely baffling.
Because he has been very successful. Especially at Bradley which was in terrible shape before he got there. And he's an alum.
I'm not saying I want him as MU's next coach, but it's easy to see why people would like him.

Sure he's been very successful...for the level he's been at. I just don't think he'd be able to recruit the level of players MU would need to be a consistent Big East contender. Lot different waters swimming with 2 and 3* players(and lower) that he gets at Bradley as opposed to the 4 and 5* guys he'd HAVE to be recruiting for MU.
I think the infatuation is for one reason only...the stability people think he'd bring. That's it.
-
I completely agree with you. And because of the nostalgia factor.
I wouldn't take him now either. But if he takes Bradley to that next level - where success is constant and sustained - then I would be more interested.
-
The PAC 12 isn't as cash rich as the Big 10 or SEC, but they're at least on par with the Big East. And Arizona is probably one of the better paying PAC 12 schools. Being able to pluck an assistant coach from there is impressive, regardless of previous connections with Wojo.
Though maybe getting away from Sean Miller was Gaineys primary concern.
-
Here is a snippet from an article prior to the 2018-2019 season. Gainey's buyout expired on 4/1/20, hired at Marquette on 4/3/20.
"Gainey will be paid $290,000 annually and Peters $275,000 through the end of the 2019-20 season, according to contracts obtained by the Star through public records requests. The contracts are fully guaranteed, unless the assistants are fired for cause. Gainey and Peters must pay $50,000 buyouts if they leave voluntarily before April 2020. "

WOW! I had no idea that assistants made this kind of money.
From what you've outlined here, makes it seem like he really wants to be at MU.

I actually think that's surprisingly low for a school like Arizona. he is undoubtedly making more at MU. Likely significantly more.

Maybe, I don't know. But I think a smart assistant coach would happily take a lateral move to get away from Sean Miller right now.

Let's see. Two assistants were named head coaches in less than a year. How many programs can say that?
I don't know. But clearly, Wojo is a leader and groomer of men. Stan and Brett would be nowhere, if not for the intellect, wisdom, and leadership of Steve. Thank you for the reminder.

Gainey was hired at Arizona after the DeAndre Ayton stuff came out.

No need for the sarcasm. He was simply stating a fact.
-
Gainey was hired at Arizona after the DeAndre Ayton stuff came out.
Right, I know that. I wasn't implying that Gainey was part of the Ayton scheme. Just that he might not want to stick around with Sean Miller to see how everything plays out. A lateral move to a more stable situation is probably appealing.
-

I didn't mean to suggest you thought Gainey was involved with Ayton. Just pointing out that Gainey went to work for Miller after that all blew up (in fact, it appears Gainey was hired to replace Book Richardson), so he went in well aware of who he was working for and what might be coming down the pike.
-
Wojo is the worst! Never hires good assistant coaches!
Except for Stan.
And Killings.
And Nelson.
But otherwise, never!
-
Based on what? Have you seen the salary schedules?
I haven't seen the salary schedules, but I am fairly confident that Johnson made well north of that.

That wasn't my point...someone in here said he was surprised assistants got paid that much. I said I thought they got more. I bet he's over $300,000 at MU.

College Coaches have consistently said its harder to recruit at the mid to low levels of D1. It is much easier to recruit at high majors .There was a good research report in this a little while back on this and I will post if I can find.
-
Gainey coming back is a solid hire. If he had never worked at MU before, his resume would be what MU is looking for. The fact that he is familiar with MU, comfortable with Wojo, and wanted to come back is great.

Really? His resume is what they would be looking for? 2 years as an assistant and that justifies associate head coach? At this pace he’ll be an NBA coach in no time

No, as a replacement for Stan. Oy.

That’s an extremely positive spin on the hire.
The extremely negative spin would be that working for Wojo is not a very desirable position and he had a hard time finding someone outside of his immediate network.
The truth is somewhere in between.

Positive spin is what I do.

Yeah no kidding.

And an established experienced assistant coach wanted to come back. From my perspective, it takes more logical gymnastics to spin it negatively.

Not my opinion. I simply stated the two ends of the spectrum.
Personally I think it was a safe hire which is perfectly fine in the given climate.

We have some talented pretzels here on Scoop -- able to twist themselves in all kinds of knots to make bringing back Gainey a huge negative.
-
As I said before. What program has had 2 assistants get head coaching jobs in less than a year? I agree some candidates may not have been interested because of the pandemic. It's not because coming here is a dead end. Gainey has SW and West ties and that was Stan's territory so it's a perfect fit.
-
My god.
Some of you cannot truly be MU fans.

Gainey had more than 2 years of experience as an assistant coach prior to his re-hire at Marquette.
-

Yep. And some of them are the same folks who think MU should have hired Chris Beard -- whose only season as a D1 coach was at a low-major.
They must have totally flipped out when our administration hired Buzz to replace Crean.

Oh boy. The pitch forks might be coming out in full force here...

I think Gainey has a better resume than Stan did when he was hired. Gainey played at NC State, then spent 3 years on NCST staff, 1 Yr as Asst. at Elon, 4 Yrs at App. State as an Asst, 3 Yrs at MU, then 1 Yr at Santa Clara & 2 Years at Arizona as an Asst at both.
Stan played at So. Utah & Bemidji, 4 Yrs Asst Coach at D2 Bemidji & SW Baptist. Asst. Coach 1 Yr Cal Northridge, 3 Yrs Utah, 2 Years Drake & 2 Yrs ASU.
Coming into the MU job Justin’s resume is as good or better than Stan’s was when he was hired. Your “2 years as an assistant” is way off the mark.

Just follow Herb Sendek.
Stan was an assistant to Mark Phelps at Drake. Phelps was an assistant to Sendek. Stan was an assistant to Sendek at Arizona St.
Gainey played for Sendek and worked under him there as well. Gainey was an assistant for Sendek at Santa Clara. Gainey was an advisor for Sean Miller at Arizona. Two corrections. It is Mark Phelps...not Pelphrey.
And Sendek was never an assistant under Miller at Arizona. Sendek has been a head coach continuously since 1993...with one year off between the ASU and Santa Clara jobs.
