Title: What did you watch in 2016?
Post by: tower912 on December 20, 2016, 11:25:11 AM
Movies?    TV?   Hulu?   Netflix?       What did you watch when you weren't watching MU?

Favorite movies, though they are probably 2015 releases, are Deadpool and Kingsmen.     Enjoyed Rogue 1 and Fantastic Beasts, but honestly, with a 10 year old, going to see a really interesting, non-blockbuster/animated movie in a theater is a far too rare treat.   GoT is appointment TV.   Beyond that, meh.

Just started watching The Crown.

Bad year for movies. Haven't seen Silence, Moonlight or Manchester By The Sea yet, but a few I liked were Hell or High Water, Sing Street and Deadpool.

Liked Deadpool at the theater, saw it again recently on HBO and didn't stand up to re-watching.

One annoying thing.  I saw Allied, the WW2 story with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard over Thanksgiving break.  All the commercials and previews make a big deal of the fact that Marion Cotillard is a suspected Nazi spy, but the reveal of that fact in the movie is more than halfway in and was designed to be the big plot twist of the movie.  It is an entirely different (and probably better) movie if you didn't know that twist was coming going in, but I doubt there was anybody watching that movie that didn't know it was coming.  Why would they do that?

Don't watch much regular television other than sports, but I liked two new shows on NBC of all places.  The Good Place and Timeless were fun, easy watches.  I am watching People of Earth and that is pretty good.

Fantastic Beasts was much funner that I thought it might be.  I enjoyed very much, but like tower said seeing it with my kids probably enhanced that.
I say the same for Dr. Strange.  Thought I just had to see since I'm hooked on Marvel, but I enjoyed way more than anticipated.  Captain America III, too.
Stranger Things was definitely a treat.
Timeless I'm enjoying.  My 13 year old insisted we DVR the show and glad I did and it's been a very fun family watch so far.  How to not change history and the consequence's if you do.
I keep thinking this is the year they find the treasure on The Curse of Oak Island.

The Crown and Rogue 1 are on the will watch list.

Deadpool is a 2016 release.  It's up for a couple Golden Globes next month.

Went through my iTunes history... purchased 35 movies this year (though 10 were part of a 10-year anniversary bundle), excluding the kids' movies, the only 2016 releases I bought for myself were Deadpool, The Nice Guys, X-Men, and Star Trek.  Only movies I saw in the theater (again, excluding the kids' genre), were the latter two and Suicide Squad.

Agree that 2016 sucked for (non-kids) movies.  Deadpool and Mascots were better than expected, but everything else seemed like a disappointment.  Granted, Lobster, Sausage Party, Birth of a Nation, F.F. Jenkins and Rogue One are still on my list... but it seems at least one of those would need to be on par with Godfather II to bring 2016 up to a decent standard overall.

As far as TV, I started watching (and caught up to present on) Archer, Rick and Morty, and Last Man on Earth.  Stayed current with South Park and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.  Watched most of the OITNB in pieces over my wife's shoulder as she started and caught up to present.

Anthropoid, thought this was a great movie.

Also recently saw Nerve, which was entertaining as well.

OJ Doc on ESPN was incredible. I'm not a binge watch guy, but I did on that one.

As I get older, I'm finding I want to watch tv far less than ever.

I'm the opposite. I watch fewer movies than I ever have. The best writing is on TV now - mostly cable networks and British stuff.

Two things not mentioned, props to Benny on Rick and Morty especially.

Finally watched True Detective Season 2. Why did this get crapped on so bad? It was really good, not Rust Cohle good, but it's GOOD. Some of the best noir ever.

Sicario, is that 2015 too?

I'm behind a year, nevermind

Season one was very well done -- i am looking forward to taking some of season 2 in over the holidays.

Truthfully with the free shipping, prime is a real great benefit - has greatly cut down my trips to the big box stores (which I hate)

So Man in the High Castle gets better? I watched the first two episodes and felt pretty let down (though the expectations I had for it probably was a big culprit of my disappointment).  I always have a bit of a struggle when it comes to how much of a new show I need to watch to give it a real chance.  Most shows don't hit their stride until a couple episodes in, and some take more than a whole season. But that's a big investment to make, too.

On that note, it might not qualify as 2016, but I'm super excited for the third season of The Leftovers. Thought the second season was one of the more ambitious things I've watched, and I absolutely loved it.

Man in the High Castle is billed as Science Fiction... is that simply because its alternate reality or does the Sci-Fi become apparent as you watch it?  Because I can't - for the life of me - figure out why something set in the 60's would qualify as Sci-Fi.

Please don't tell me that the main premise is technology developed faster with the Nazis and Japanese Empire in charge.

Part of it stems from the fact that the author (Phillip K Dick) plays heavily in that genre.  He also wrote Blade Runner, Total Recall & Minority Report - among other pieces.

If you watch the whole season I think also will see why it does have some connection to sci-fi

While it's only one episode, for those with little kiddo's, the animated Snowy Day on Amazon is nice watch.

I guess the standards for science fiction in the 60s are much different than they are today.  Back then, jerking it to internet porn would have been considered science fiction.  Today, a story about the tri-mammary hooker in Total Recall would likely air on Lifetime rather than Sy-Fy.

That said, I just watched the first 20 mins. of S1Ep1 over lunch, and it's pretty obvious how this will easily qualify as sci-fi - even by 2016-standards - at some point.

  • Full Frontal with Samantha Bee: The Daily Show really erred when they went to Trevor Noah instead of Samantha Bee. She's a far better host, more entertaining, and more willing to be critical of the party she supports. Wish this was nightly instead of weekly, though it'd probably put TDS out of business.
I like Sam Bee, but they really missed out with John Oliver.  After he subbed for Stewart, Stewart wasn't as funny in comparison, and was no better than the pundits he criticized.

I've caught about 10 minutes of every episode.  What I did watch was very compelling.
rocketsurgeon - If I can find it, I'll copy it.  Rolling Stone published a statement from Scientology on the show and it's venomous and does make you think she should watch her backside.

Found:
http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/5-things-we-learned-from-scientology-the-aftermath-ep-3-w455929

A spokesperson from the Church of Scientology was contacted about this article and responded with the statement below:
"Leah Remini is doing this for the money and now tries to pretend otherwise. Ms. Remini is being compensated for this show, just as she profited from her book. In addition, she attempted to extort the Church by first demanding $500,000, followed by an additional $1 million, because the Church invoked its First Amendment right to respond to her false claims with the truth. This shows the extent Leah Remini is willing to go to in order to distort the truth about Scientology."

Oliver's problem is that he doesn't talk to people, he talks at them. He's too preachy, and his weekly rants are all basically the same thing. Once you've seen one Oliver rant, you've seen them all. He did okay filling in for Stewart, but couldn't hold a candle to him long term.

I am about halfway through The Crown right now, and it is pretty fascinating.

It's not the girly costume drama one might expect; it's more of a dramatization of post-war British politics.  Lots of interesting stuff about Winston Churchill and Edward VII.

Also, apparently Prince Philip was a complete dick about having to play second fiddle to the monarchy.

The Crown isn't all that bad. My only comment is that I was appalled about Lithgow playing Churchill but in the form he did a respectable job. Really quite believable.

I'm not sure if this was a 2015 series, but I just got around to binge watching the 10 episodes of The People vs OJ. Really brought back a lot of memories. I was in a conference room watching the trial on tv with about 50 people when the verdict was read. The group was pretty evenly split between African Americans and whites. The reactions in the room were exactly as shown in the movie.

Stranger Things was my favorite thing I watched in 2016.

GoT, of course. The Americans and The Affair, both very good.

I really liked both OJ series, both the doc and the Cuba Gooding one.

Just started watching High Castle and looking forward to enjoying the 2 seasons.

Based on what others have said, I will give Westworld another shot. I was a little tired and couldn't get through the first episode, and my wife was snoring in the chair next to me. But that happens. One of my favorite shows ever, Six Feet Under, I hated the first episode but forced myself to watch it again after it got good reviews - and was glad I did.

I agree about Full Frontal. Sam Bee is outstanding. I also like Oliver very much even though a few things bug me about it. For those saying Oliver and Sam are "funnier" than Stewart was, do remember it's easier to come up with material and clever ways to deliver it when you're only on once a week. Stewart and Colbert were amazingly consistent, night after night after night. I miss them terribly.

I haven't seen many movies in theaters this year and those I did see didn't do much for me. The most acclaimed one I've seen was Arrival and I thought it was only OK. I have Deadpool on the DVR and am looking forward to carving out a couple hours to watch it. Soon, I think!

The Man in the High Castle (Amazon)

This series is good.  Been caught up with family, just started but look forward to finishing the new season.

Goliath was a decent Amazon series as well.  I thought the first season of Mozart in the Jungle was really good, but the last two have been poor.

From Netflix, Stranger Things was very good though not as incredible as the hype.  Marco Polo and Daredevil second seasons weren't bad but not nearly as good as the firsts.  I thought they did the Arrested Development re-boot well, but of this year's tries Fuller House was bad and Gilmore Girls wasn't much better.  Saw the Netflix movie Fundamentals of Caring with the family yesterday, and it was better than expected.

GoT had a pretty good season; I thought season 5 was pretty poor but this one was a good bounce back.  Like Oliver, though it's gotten repetitive.

Loved Breaking Bad but didn't give Better Call Saul a chance until last month (thought it would just be slapstick Odenkirk in bright suits defending small-time ABQ bad guys).

Exceptional TV that stands up in every way to Breaking Bad. Really looking forward to season 3.

I had almost this exact same thought, MG. I thought it would be OK at best and it has far exceeded expectations.

I forgot to also say how much I enjoyed The Night Of on HBO.

Finished Man in the High Castle yesterday... excellent.  Not sure if there is going to be a third season, but I'll be content if this were the end.

The x-ray feature is pretty cool, by the way... even though S2 didn't have much detail, it was especially helpful in keeping track of the various characters.

The Crown isn't all that bad. My only comment is that I was appalled about Lithgow playing Churchill but in the form he did a respectable job. Really quite believable.

I managed to watch with the wife over the long New Year's weekend.  It was excellent.  The Churchill portrait episode is worth the price of admission.
Bizarre to watch how a monarch should be able to change things with the wave of a hand, but they necessarily can't.

In a testament to Lithgow, I didnt even realize that was him until I looked up the cast after the first couple episodes. I loved Dexter, and I had to look up if Lithgow was British or American because his accent was so believable, and ive been living in England since September.

Also finished the second season and thought it was great.  Saw the news this morning that it's been renewed for season three.

Also saw that Marco Polo was cancelled - probably a good call.  Thought the first season was very impressive, less so the second.  Should also have just called it Kublai Khan, because Benedict Wong made that show.

I have enjoyed "Berlin Station".  It is on Epix, which you may not even know you have or not.  I think it is included in a lot of cable packages.  Kinda like Homeland if you enjoy that.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Black Mirror" yet.  glow jr. turned me on to it.  Imagine "Twilight Zone" set in the very near future, with a focus on where technology is taking us.

Although it can be uneven from episode to episode, it is fascinating.  The pilot was absolutely jaw-dropping.

You're right about the pilot - and then I found it mostly disappointing after that.

For those with kids - mine (8 & 10) started watching TrollHunters a Dreamworks production on Netflix.  Pretty quality series and the kids are totally into it.

OK, it's 2017 but we are 3 shows into A Series Of Unspeakable Events and it's fantastic.  Dark, funny, sick, and positive - very well done.

*Unfortunate

Really? Eh, I mean, its alright better than the movie at least. I loved the books when I was younger, read them all multiple times and I just think that the style of the books doesnt lend itself well to be put into a film/show format. Very Wes Anderson style, so not for everyone.

damn accepting auto correct too soon!!

It may be that i'm too old to have read the books and therefore i have no preconceived notions and am seeing it with our 10 yr old (and through his eyes?).  Did the books lend themselves to being this theatrical, or is it just NPH?

It was pretty theatrical. I will say the Patrick Warburton scenes are very true to the books, when I read the books, I think I just imagined a much dryer tone.

I do recommend the books, it may be a "children's" series but adults could enjoy them as well. Would be a good investment in-between seasons as well as the first season is only the first 4 of 13 books.

Update after watching episode 4. Dont think NPH was the right cast of Count Olaf, hes too goofy/whimsical and not dark/creepy enough. Thats probably my biggest complaint of the series. Patrick Warburton is great though.

This may be the first instance for me where the book really has ruined the show/movie. With the Harry Potter films and others, I easily got over it and never really had a problem/compared it to the book. For whatever reason I just cant enjoy it as much as I want to. All that being said, Ill still end up watching the entire series because they keep the plot pretty true to the books.

News out of Albuquerque:  Apparently there is an old Taco Bell that has been recently mocked up to look like a Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant.

Hmmmm.....I wonder what that means.....

Movies?    TV?   Hulu?

I watch sports and a Fox Business

OJ Doc on ESPN was incredible. I'm not a binge watch guy, but I did on that one.

As I get older, I'm finding I want to watch tv far less than ever.

You and me on both counts.

I won't admit to what I watch on television nowadays. It's pretty trite. The critics hate it, but well......

Eeh gads we've come a long way since the The Love Boat, Cannon and Charlie's Angels.
