Title: Luke Fischer double-team
Post by: MauraDay on December 22, 2014, 08:57:34 PM
Only hearing the game and not seeing it, but seems that Fisher is getting double-teamed often.
Now that the word is out on him, can we expect this every game?

He is.  ND's defensive scheme is to double him aggressively as soon as he receives the ball.   So far, nobody is moving toward open areas and making ND pay.    And yes, this can be expected going forward.

Most likely we can expect this.  Luke has shown he has good vision and can pass out of it.  Right now everyone else is doing a poor job with floor spacing, which is not allowing us to take advantage of the double teams.  Need to space the floor better and doubling Luke will open it up for other people.

Likely expected, hopefully good adjustments after half.

Are the threes bad shots or is it just a team-wide off night? That seems like it'd help the double team.

Combo of both. JJJ had a few reallygood looks and could only make 1. Most were pretty open though for everyone.

Shooters need to knock down shots, although I didn't see too many pinpoint kickouts.  Work in progress.

JJJ and Duane need to make open 3s because smart teams will double Luke and stay tight on Carlino.

JJJ and Duane combine to go 5-for-11 from downtown a couple times, and it will make opponents think twice before doubling Luke.

Good that this is happening now. Have another game to practice the kick outs.

Wojo talked about it in the post game and essentially said yes.  He also said that means someone is always open and we have to find that person and make them pay.

Was at game and yes the double team was instant and Luke delayed a second to try to pass out because no one really cleared themselves to help. Learning process

Yup--this is about the best thing that could have happened.  Seems like it was inevitable that teams would start doing this, so at least it is now.  Give him some looks at this at game speed before we get to BE play, give Wojo a chance to coach them all on how best to exploit the switches, and then have another game to put into practice.

When it happened to Ox last year, we had nobody to make them pay.  This is a different team though.  Let's see what happens if this becomes a trend all year.

I can imagine that they've spent very little time on it to date.  Remember that only 30 days ago Wojo was quickly installing an emergency zone defense.  Then he certainly had to work on things simply to incorporate Luke into the mix.

Luke is an outstanding passer with a limited number of bad habits that still need work.  I'm confident we'lll be much better against the double team 10 days from now.  And we've got multiple guys who can normally knock down the step in open look 3.  It'll be a joy to watch.
