Herman called and told him he’d be behind James Bishop on the depth chart.
We still have Koby.

As I expected, the prospect of being tormented daily in practice by Dexter Akanno was just too much for him.
#Fridayafternoonnewscycle
-
Its ok, he's aiming at the NBA.
He might not be NBA size-growth-talent-wise by fall 2020 ...but he's trying to fast-track by skipping that extra HS year. His dad was a PRO, he's thinking PRO. 5-stars are nice but we'll be fine.
just my 2 cents worth.

Best of luck to Nico
From 247
“I’d say like a day after, maybe two days after the in-home,” Mannion said. “I mean I kind of had an idea and I was leaning that way a little bit, but Marquette is such a great school as well that I at least wanted to give them a shot. But after the in-home, a day or two after it just felt right. I didn’t need to take anymore visits, it felt like home.”
-
Can't lose what you never had. Good luck, Nico. MU will be fine.

At least he didn’t publicly question our goals.

Bummer Plummer.

I think Scoop needs to reassess the moniker name change strategy. The letter writing campaigns were far more succcessful.

Damn Friday afternoon news drop
Next man up! Watts, Bishop, Lundy, who wants it?

Can't lose what you never had. Good luck, Nico. MU will be fine.
Great! An undefeated season guaranteed!

I think it may only work on Wisconsin recruits. We're 2/2 with Henry and Joey.
-
Can't lose what you never had. Good luck, Nico. MU will be fine.
So we "lost" Brandon Bell and John Dawson but not Nico Mannion. Why then does this feel 1000x worse?
-
Not bothered. Koby got dis.
-
This seemed rather obvious
We need to win to land these guys.
I think the winning is coming quick
-
Waiting to see Nico and Dexter Facing off.
-
So we "lost" Brandon Bell and John Dawson but not Nico Mannion. Why then does this feel 1000x worse?
Indigestion?
Tower is correct that we didn't lose Nico. But we did lose a recruiting battle to Arizona. It sucks but life goes on. Duke, Villanova, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, and a bunch of others also lost the same recruiting battle.
Next man up!
-
Well time to drink some wine
-
Thank you Nico. You are classier than Grimes who still visited MU after already deciding on going to Kansas. Now we know who to key on at MU madness.
-
I can't feel bad about this, we were a long shot from the beginning.
-
McEwen, Howard, Elliott, Sacar, and Akanno think they can handle it. (With help from Hauser, Hauser, Cain, Bailey) (Morrow, Ike, and Theo don't care about guards, they just want somebody to wrestle with under the hoop)
-
Let’s close the deal with James Bishop.
-
Best answer is yes. Second best answer is no, aina?
-
I can't feel bad about this, we were a long shot from the beginning.
not when we were down to the final too but I do agree we will move on
-
Son, we're going to be really good with you or without you.
Good luck at Arizona. When we make the Final Four and win the National Championship, just remember. You could have been a part of this.
Again, good luck to you.
-
not when we were down to the final too but I do agree we will move on
To me at that point it was friendship that kept us in. Good Luck Nico.

I'm bummed to lose out on Mannion but proud of how Stan and Wojo recruited him. We're in good hands.

Agreed, though we do need to win some of these. Hopefully in 2020.
-
Wish we would have gotten him. Duke and Kansas wish they would have gotten him, too.
I still think we'll be very good, and I remain very impressed by Wojo and Stan on the recruiting trail.
Go Marquette!

One problem with your logic. The guy that Duke or Kansas gets instead of Mannion will likely be close to his equal. The guy we get won't. When you're routinely signing 5* players missing out on one isn't so painful.
Go Marquette!

He will be fine. Marquette will be fine.

Would have been nice to land a high 5-star like Nico, yet, given the depth and talent in the program as is, in some ways this may have been for the best for team chemistry.
Next year would have been a logjam at guard position (unless Markus is able to leave after this season.)
McEwen is a proven player, who will only get better in this year off, and Greg Elliott also should be even further along as combo guard next season as well.
Think at this stage guys like Akanno and Bishop are better fits for what the program needs - guys who likely are more willing to labor for a couple years before making big marks as upperclassmen.
-
Missing out on a recruit of this stature is always disappointing, but it's hard to be too worried when we have McEwen in the fold already. I'm usually not a fan of banking a scholarship, but in this case, I think it's the right decision for two reasons. First, we have no idea what will happen with Arizona. If the FBI turns something up that leads to NCAA violations, it's possible Mannion will be back in play. Second, our roster right now is very well balanced. Looking at 2019-20, we have 4 guards (Howard, Elliott, McEwen, Akanno), 4 wings (Anim, Cain, Sam, Bailey), and 4 bigs (Morrow, Joey, Theo, Eke) with some positional overlap. I think you can wait to see what's there in Spring, whether it's a stud grad transfer that puts us over the top, a project freshman, or a sit-out transfer that gives practice depth without requiring on-court minutes.
-
Wojo won't bank da schollie. Always keep recruitin', aina?
-
Good luck to the young man. Glad he found his right fit. Impressed by the class on both sides. You don't see that a whole lot in today's recruiting landscape.
-
Wojo won't bank da schollie. Always keep recruitin', aina?
Brew City is just suggesting that the scholie be saved for the Spring period. Makes sense.
-

Agreed. All good.
-

Got dat, butt figurin' Wojo ain't doin' dat no how, hey?
-
If James Bishop is ready to commit at madness he will be on the team. Same if Watts/Lundy ever schedule visits.
We could have a Quinerley situation if the FBI does dig up something meaningful on Zona, but I'm not holding my breath. If it happens, you take Nico and figure out how to make room after.
If we have an open scholarship in the spring, I'm a fan of bringing in a traditional transfer. As Brew points out, we are stacked and balanced already. Would be nice to bring a stud who will be eligible after we lose four seniors.
Missed on all our five stars this season which sucks. Any one of them could have put us over the top. We have some good opportunities in the next two years with Jalen Johnson, Pat Baldwin Jr, and Michael Foster all in our backyard. Not to mention borderline guys like Dawson Garcia. I think we have some on the court success these next two years and that helps land one or two of these guys.
-
Hard to sign 5 stars coming off NIT seasons, with the close seconds we have had, on these types, a few consecutive years of decent BE finishes and NCAA appearances and I am confident these almosts will turn into commitments. Wojo n stan are doing a great job but thelack of winning is too much to overcome imo.
-

Can you ever imagine Duke, Kentucky, UNC or other top program ever thinking guys on the wrong side of the top 100 or 200 are preferable to a 5*? Me neither.
-
Can you ever imagine Duke, Kentucky, UNC or other top program ever thinking guys on the wrong side of the top 100 or 200 are preferable to a 5*? Me neither.
Understand your point, and the short answer is "No." You'd know better than me, but didn't Al somewhat limit how he stacked five-star talent on top of five-star talent? Granted, McEwen, and Elliott weren't 5-star recruits out of high school, but both have proven themselves to be great prospects. Not to mention Markus was a 5-star.
Yes, it would have been great to land Nico, yet I think we still stand a great chance of success next season assuming Wojo can turn in good/solid coaching.
-

Hard to argue with that, Lenny. Good point.

You’re the only person who says this.
How miserable it must be to go through life with every thought being negative, as is joyless willie's case.
-

Well clearly Wojo wanted Mannion so we should. But there are more ways to build a program than through five stars.

Where have we heard this before......
Crean had a few good runs as did Buzz. Did that lead to recruiting Nirvana? If recruiting were only that simple you might be correct. Five star dudes are really really tough to get.

Nope. No one has said this but you.

This is probably the correct way to look at it. For as much as we won in the later years under Buzz, he was never able to snag that five star after Vander.
If anything Wojo and co. have been much more successful at big game hunting than Buzz was even with two S16s and an Elite 8.
-
How many top 10s did crean or buzz come in second on?? To wojos credit i think he has been anneven better recruiter tgan either of them. And i think if we can get into tge tourney the next two years, which we should ourvrecruiting will taking an even higher step up.

Great job in recruiting, coaching has been suspect. Talent trumps all tho and we should be good on the court, which i believe will allow them to achieve even greater future sucess in recruiting

Two points willie. It does seem sometimes that you are a one trick pony only pointing out things when the program comes up short. Second, i absolutely cringed when I saw the personal attack levied against you. Anyway, so goes Scoop I suppose. But it shouldn't be that way.

For the record .. I have signatures hidden, so I only find out when people report them.
Unfortunately, we can't edit them, we can only cajole users to change them, and only have one recourse (banning) when they do not.
I have recently asked users to do this.

Why? Because Miller has won so many NCAA tournament games the last few years? Because Miller handed Nico a bag full of Benjamins? Because Zona is guaranteed to be better than MU in 2019-20?

I did not mean to have "a tone." Re-reading what I wrote, I definitely sounded like I had one, so a million pardons.
Goose and I are cool (I hope). I am legitimately interested in why he "can't blame" Nico for choosing Arizona over MU.
I sure wouldn't have blamed him for choosing MU over Zona. We're gonna be a better team, one of his buddies is on our team, etc.

It's over. Let it go.

I think it would be incredibly stupid of Arizona to pay a recruit while being investigated for that very thing by the FBI.

Agreed. I don’t think Nico was paid. I’m just saying that a recruiting benefit that Arizona has over Marquette is that they pay recruits well, and I’m quite confident that they pay/paid better than MU does/did.
-
2) If I had said that how would that make us not look good?
If a recruit is looking to be paid it makes absolutely no sense that he would have a non paying team in his final 2.
-

I would argue if you're a recruit looking to be paid you would want one program that you know is going to pay you and the rest of your finalists to be squeaky clean. Unless you just want to throw a couple middle fingers up to the NCAA and say, "Yup, we all know I'm going to the highest bidder, try and stop it."
-
C'mon guys. Everything we know about Nico is that he's a super solid kid from a great family. Let's not taint his thoughtful process. He made a decision that he believes in his best interest. All good.

Glow is right, intimating that he chose Arizona because they paid him makes us look awful. You can argue semantics all your want that you didn't actually say he got paid, but the only reason to bring up the issue is to imply it.

Where has it been factually proven? Allegations are allegations. Where are your facts? What has been proven?
-
Here are the basic facts as I understand them on Arizona and the FBI's investigation into college basketball recruiting.
In September 2017, Arizona assistant coach Emanuel "Book" Richardson was one of four NCAA assistant coaches indicted on charges of fraud and corruption. Richardson was immediately suspended by Arizona, pled not guilty to the charges in November, then formally fired in January of this year.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/20824193/ncaa-basketball-coaches-10-charged-fraud-corruption (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/20824193/ncaa-basketball-coaches-10-charged-fraud-corruption)
In February of this year, ESPN reported that FBI wiretaps intercepted phone conversations in which Sean Miller discussed paying $100,000 to land Deandre Ayton.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/22559284/sean-miller-arizona-christian-dawkins-discussed-payment-ensure-deandre-ayton-signing-according-fbi-investigation (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/22559284/sean-miller-arizona-christian-dawkins-discussed-payment-ensure-deandre-ayton-signing-according-fbi-investigation)
A week later, Sports Illustrated reported that ESPN got the details wrong. According to their source, the FBI wiretaps didn't start until after Ayton had already committed to Arizona.
https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2018/03/01/arizona-sean-miller-deandre-ayton-espn-report (https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2018/03/01/arizona-sean-miller-deandre-ayton-espn-report)
Because both reports were based on leaks of protected information, it's hard to say anything definitively right now. The FBI has advised the NCAA to wait until the federal government's investigation is complete before looking into potential sanctions for the schools involved.
Sean Miller remains the coach at Arizona and the administration has stood with him. We'll have to see what else comes out.
-
Meh ... must easier and more fun to assume Miller cheats!
-
An Arizona coach was charged in a federal investigation. There is 0 doubt Arizona cheats, or at least did until a year ago.
-
The feds wouldn't have indicted Richardson without significant evidence. He faces multiple bribery and fraud charges, which could involve up to 60 years in prison and over a million dollars in fines.
Two of Richardson's co-defendants have already pled guilty in return for their cooperation. Richardson may eventually do the same, or fight the charges to the end (potentially a very risky and expensive proposition). Whatever the eventual fallout, the situation at Arizona doesn't look good.
Here's a more in-depth summary of the FBI's case from the Arizona Daily Star, posted back in March:
https://tucson.com/sports/arizonawildcats/basketball/updated-timeline-how-fbi-s-wiretaps-and-investigation-threatened-to/collection_501418c4-a2f6-11e7-bde8-37db291076d6.html (https://tucson.com/sports/arizonawildcats/basketball/updated-timeline-how-fbi-s-wiretaps-and-investigation-threatened-to/collection_501418c4-a2f6-11e7-bde8-37db291076d6.html)
-
Meh ... must easier and more fun to assume Miller cheats!
Personally, I think the chances are 50/50 or better that Miller is eventually implicated. If not in federal court, then in the following NCAA investigation.
Arizona hasn't shown the same persistent pattern of wrongdoing as Louisville. But it's hard for me to believe Miller was completely uninvolved or had no idea what Richardson was doing. And as head of the program, Miller is ultimately responsible for his staff.
With several trials (Adidas exec James Gatto, consultant Merl Code and agent Christian Dawkins), starting in October, we should know more soon. Richardson's trial is set for next April.

I would never bet against federal prosecutors; thier conviction rate is over 96%. They don't waste their time unless it's a slam dunk. (see how I made this a basketball related post)

If they're really after you they'll get you. They have the resources to turn jump balls into slam dunks.
-
There's a good chance most if not all of these initial cases get resolved early. About 90% of federal cases are settled before trial.
This investigation started years ago. The FBI's modus operandi is to build the strongest possible case before making a single arrest. Between wiretaps and following the money, the evidence is likely overwhelming and nearly irrefutable.
It could be that in one or more of the October cases (such as Gatto or Dawkins), the feds will offer reduced charges in exchange for guilty pleas and cooperation in future cases. Which would further turn up the heat on Richardson or targets yet to be indicted.

At Arizona.....It partially "sells" itself......
Have you ever been on that campus......It is like UCLA or USC.....It is a "coed" rich environment.....
That is how we lost Gabe York back in the day.....
One visit.....A few introductions while he was there.....And he signed within days.....
Louisville does it in a "slightly" different manner.....LOL.....
