What do you think the future holds for Jamil Wilson? I haven't seen him mocked in any of the mock drafts lately and wonder if playing in the NBA is realistic for him anymore. I don't think he has the drive to succeed in the NBA, just curious as to what others are thinking.

He has the body of an NBA player, just not the consistency. But I could see a team taking a flyer on him.

I vote the D League.

You probably also thought Dominic James would be in the NBA after his senior year too.

I hope Jamil Wilson tries his hand at coaching.  He seems like someone who loves the game and knows it well enough to be a decent coach.

Huh? I said the D League...not the NBA. I said I can see a team taking a flyer on him and sending him to the minors hoping his game can catch up to his body.

He may have the body, but he doesn't have the skill sets he would need to compete in the NBA. I don't think it has much to do with will or consistency.

I vote Europe.

I never really believed that someone with a good pedigree, NBA body, NBA talent, good coaching, and a healthy resume could play themselves out of contention simply by being a bonehead, until I watched Jamil Wilson.

Just curious, what makes you believe that Jamil has NBA talent?

His size, speed, athletic ability, and has shown that he CAN play at the nba level. He just doesn't.

He's not quick enough to create his own shot on offense or guard the perimeter on D. He would need to do both of these effectively, or one exceptionally in the NBA because he isn't big enough to play down low. How many times did you see Jamil take his man off the dribble? Now, how many times did you see him attempt to make a move and then pull up for a jumper?

Also, he doesn't have a good outside shot or adequate ball handling ability. Both of these could be improved, but neither are NBA caliber right now. His lack of quickness can't be improved enough, and that will ultimately keep him out of the league, not his lack of heart, will, or whatever intangible nonsense some have projected on him.

I voted "overseas" but I'd also bet that Jake Thomas makes more money playing professional basketball in his lifetime than Jamil will.

That may be true and could be for the best. From what I've heard about Jamil as a person, I think he may find a calling serving others in some capacity. Either way, I hope he finds success and happiness in whatever he pursues.

Perfect analysis. He looks like an NBA player in introductions, warm ups and on those very rare occasions when he shoots lights out, but he lacks the skills and quickness to play on the perimeter and the size and toughness to play inside. Great young man who may change the world but it will be off the court.

Jamil could be Jimmy Butler 2.0 if he wanted to be but he may lack Jimmy's hard edge.

I really like Jamil. Strikes me as a very nice and thoughtful young man. I wish him the best in whatever he does in life.

Sorry AC, I respect your opinions but I think this lack of edge / will / heart / killer instinct stuff is bogus. He isn't nearly as quick as Jimmy and his shot and ball handling are certainly worse than JB's were at the end of his MU career.

I don't remember Jimmy having this great edge or killer instinct at MU, but I do remember him being quick and athletic enough to guard the best player every night. I also remember him creating his own shots when necessary. Those are two things Jamil never really proved he could do.

I honestly think many are fooled by Jamil because he looks the part. Hell, I was fooled by it a year ago. I remember arguing with the late, great Sultan about this at the end of last season. I spent a lot of time watching Jamil with a more critical eye this year, and now I think Sultan was right. Jamil isn't good enough for the NBA, and it doesn't have anything to do with his head or heart.

I like him too. Very much, and also wish him well. But Jimmy Butler 2.0? No way. Jimmy totally stopped ultra quick point guard Tu Holloway of Xavier in the NCAAs and holds his own against the best offensive players in the world (Lebron, Carmello) in the NBA. He's an elite defender at more than one position. Jamil was a barely adequate defender at the college level - not because he didn't try but because he lacked Jimmy's quickness.

D-League.

But I don't think Jamil will be sticking around long enough. His demeanor suggests to me that he knows there's more to the world than basketball, and basketball isn't the world to him.

Yet, he has the tools to make a DL roster and stick on it.

Disagree. Feel they are the same athletically. In some ways Jamil is more graceful/efficient. Jimmy has a bigger motor and plays with more intensity.

Let's table this until we see the stats on measurements, timing, etc around draft time. I'm very curious if my subjective sense is right or if I also was tricked into seeing what I wanted to see.

Agree, let's wait and see. I was wrong about Vander getting drafted, so I could be off base on Jamil as well.

Last point I'll make about Jamil. I think you are spot on when you say he is more graceful. That's especially true in the open court. Jamil is fast, has long strides, and can jump like an NBAer. It's the lack of lateral quickness and explosive first step that kills him.

Edit: Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get the chance to find out. I doubt Jamil gets an invite to the combine.

I agree with AC here.  If you erase the Xavier NCAA game from your memory, this could've been used word for word to describe Jimmy after his senior year at Marquette.  While Jimmy's athleticism was underrated at Marquette, Jamil is also a freak athlete.

The problem with Jamil was never his physical attributes.    It was the lack of the inner beast.    Nice kid, smart, deferential teammate, guarded all 5 positions defensively, played all 5 positions offensively.   Ultimate glue guy on a team that needed him to be 'the man'.

When the Season Started Nbadraft.net had Jamil as a Second round pick. (Not that this means anything) but he literally played himself out of the draft.

Most notably when he deferred and passed to D. Wilson for a game winner vs St Johns or Went to the line and went 0 for 2 vs Xavier in the Big east tournament down the stretch.

If it were me id do Overseas or Nothing...... D league pays about 20K a season you can make 10 times that amount tax free overseas.

This would not keep someone with NBA level talent and athletic ability out of the NBA.

But you have to hang something on Buzz.

The starters he continued to roll out, the reluctance to go to a younger lineup that pushes the ball (where Jamil flourishes), making plays for Jamil...Buzz definitely had a hand on how to showcase his players' strengths.

Sure, but I don't think showcasing Jamil would have gotten him into the NBA.

Clearly there are two separate camps on Jamil.

1. Jamil has NBA ability - he simply lacked some intangible qualities and the desire to develop his ability enough to make it to the next level. If you are in this camp, I could see how you might place some blame on Buzz. However, Buzz has proven capable of developing non-blue chip talent into NBA players, so I don't think its fair to place a majority of the blame on his shoulders.

2. Jamil doesn't have NBA ability - unlikely that any level of desire, will, killer instinct, edge, inner beast, could make up for his lack of ability. If you are in this camp, Buzz couldn't have done anything to develop Jamil into an NBA player.
