Two 6 team divisions?  They should call one the Big Five the other the Big Seven.

They should call them both the Big Five.  Or Big F6ive.

Smart move taking the number of teams out.  This logo sucks though.

Worst division logo in college sports.  I always though the old Big Ten logo was cool, but this new one sucks.

More importantly, the LEADER$ and LEGEND$ divisions?  Could they be any more pretentious? Stu Scott announcing on ESPN "the Iowa Hawkeyes are the current leaders of the LEADER$ division in the B10(2)"

I hope the division logos incorporate some cleverly placed faces and numbers to at least keep with tradition.

It will be a pretty small step - from a design perspective - to change that "G" to a "6" (since the "I" is already formatted as a "1").

This is awful. I just can't figure out what is the most awful among the logos, the division names, and the 18 trophies each named for two people. Seriously, 36 people now have trophies named after them in the Big Ten. And in the illustrious 114 year history of the conference, they couldn't find better choices than Antwaan Randle El, Courtney Brown, and Brandon Fields (who once was a finalist for the Ray Guy award!)

I love everything about this.

The Big Ten will award the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy to the winner of the new Big Ten football title game, which begins in 2011. The trophy honors former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and current Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

The MVP of the championship game will receive the Grange-Griffin Trophy, which honors former Illinois great Red Grange and former Ohio State star Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy.

After seeing that logo, I'm sure there were 1000's of people throughout the country who are Big Ten fans going, WTF.  The same look that MU students gave when Gold was announced.

Brutal logo.

I actually think it's just as lame as the Gold. Legends and Leaders? It sounds like reading groups in elementary school. They take an easy thing like division names and embarrass themselves by listening to some "expert" branding people. I do not understand this kind of thing at all. East/West? North/South? Red/Blue? The Tribune's guy suggested Stars and Stripes. All would be better than what they paid somebody to come up with. It's really flabbergasting how idiotic decision makers seem to be.

Well, I can't say I like the "B1G" part alone, but it's better than the whole logo with the "ten" below.  That one is visually very difficult to look at.  Maybe it's just my eyes...

The the designers of the logo:

"The new Big Ten logo was developed to symbolize the conference's future, as well as its rich heritage, strong tradition of competition, academic leadership and passionate alumni," Gericke said in the conference's release. "Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral '10' in the word 'BIG,' which allows fans to see 'BIG' and '10' in a single word. Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo's use of negative space and is built on the conference's iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions."

So are they using Leaders and Legends for all sports?

For basketball, I think they should have the Snipes and Harrelson divisions. But the Snipes division would only have 4 teams.

Big Ten fans going ape #$#&( over this.  LOL.  It's getting killed on ESPN in the polls, the comments....go to the fan boards and people are calling it one of the most ridiculous things they've seen in college sports.

Drew Brees for a QB trophy?  HUH?  In 114 years, Drew Brees is the best QB in the Big Ten to have a trophy named after him?

Some classic lines out there and funny mock logos that people are coming up.

A WISCONSIN GRAD CREATED THE LOGO!!!!!!!!!

"The new Big Ten logo was developed to symbolize the conference's future, as well as its rich heritage, strong tradition of competition, academic leadership, and passionate alumni,” said Gericke, who studied design at the University of Wisconsin.

I had the Big Ten's logo, but the Pac Ten's isn't much better.  You have two different fonts...one for the word and one for the numbers.  Ugly.

What if I told you they also intend to turn the B into an 8 - and envelope every Div I and II school and add 189 Div III schools to create an 816 member conference  ;D

I would believe that before I would believe that they're not already planning to change the G to a 6 down the road.

The Traditional division would have 10 teams.  Michigan and Illinois would battle it out for the Non-Tradttional title every year.

Maybe the divisions could be re-named the Warriors and the Gold. Those names aren't being used anymore.

The big question (to me, anyways) is if the Big Ten will keep the division names and logo despite them being almost universally panned and mocked or if they'll give in to public demand, swallow their pride and make a change.

What are they calling the conference, The Big 10, The Big 12, or perhaps the "Double 6's" for 6 in in each division? How about The 66?

It is stupid to keep the name Big 10.

You know what?  I'm beginning to think that Delany doesn't give a rip about this.  He knows they are over the top...but when you are the most powerful man in college athletics (perhaps with his colleague from the SEC), you can pretty much do what you want.

Big Ten might reconsider those ridiculous division names.

"Delany said during an interview with WGN AM-720 in Chicago on Thursday that the names Legends and Leaders were picked to highlight the conference's rich history, and that "to a great extent it's fallen on deaf ears." Many fans have instead mocked the names and asked officials to reconsider, which Delany said could happen after the first of the year."

Dan Bernstein agrees with everything you just said.
