Article also says......

The Jazz brass do not want to carry a full roster of 15 this year, either, so a final 14th spot could be up for grabs between the rookie Matthews and the veteran Dupree.

With the injuries they've had, I think they will carry 15 until everyone is back at 100%.

Not disagreeing....just wondering if you missed that last sentence due to it being below all of the ads.

Wes was the only senior last year who I thought had any chance at all of sticking if in the right situation. He's made the most of his opportunity and has an NBA body. The one factor that needs to be considered are veterans that are now being cut like Juan Dixon etc. Such a scenerio could bump him out. However, if the Jazz are in a money saving mode, then Wes is a bargin at the League minimum salary. In any regard, bravo to Wes.

We said the same thing about diener and novak and they both get on the court a lot now.  Hopefully it will be the same story with Wes.

Apparently $457,588 for your first year in the league.  If he manages to stay on for next year, the min is $762,195 for a 2nd year player in 2010-11.

Honest question:

Is it better to make the team as the 14th or 15th guy and never play or go to an inferior league and continue to play?

The money in the NBA is clearly better. As is the proximity to coaches and management.

But, where can you improve more as a player? The D League? Europe?

It's always better to actually be in the Association. While there is the occasional guy who plays overseas and then comes back to the NBA, most guys never get another shot. If you have the opportunity to get onto an NBA roster, you take it.

As far as improving as a player, the best way to improve is to play. However, the coaching at the NBA level is far superior to what he would get in Europe. And there aren't many who are better than Jerry Sloan.

On top of that i believe he would see some playing time, because the Jazz are so depleted at their guard position.

From Twitter:

Quote
Jazz Waives Dupree and Harris
SALT LAKE CITY (October 22, 2009) - Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor announced today that the team has waived forward Ronald Dupree and guard Paul Harris. The Jazz roster now stands at 14.

Dupree (6-7, 209, LSU) has played in 154 regular season NBA games in five seasons with Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota and Seattle. He appeared in seven preseason contests with the Jazz, averaging 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 11.6 minutes a game.

Harris (6-4, 230, Syracuse) went undrafted in the 2009 NBA Draft after three seasons at Syracuse. He suffered a moderate right ankle sprain prior to training camp and did not appear in a preseason game with the Jazz.

Harris and Dupree waived to get to their target of 14 players instead of the 15 limit.  Congrats to Wes.  And we have to be glad he was picked up by the right organization-no better coach than Sloan to evaluate your talent and give you a fair shot.

Good article on the hurdles left. It sounds like they want to keep only 13, but with Korver sidelined they would have to keep Wes.  Also he could get cut anytime till Jan 10 when contracts become guaranteed.

Good thing is they sound like they won't be going the waiver route.

Geez... Sloan sounds like he loves to talk to reporters.  From that it sounds like Wes is still there and that's about it.  They definitely would prefer to be at 13 players it seems like, but I don't think that is possible right now.

Don't forget to add in a game day per diem of around $300, money from licensing for videogames, basketball cards, posters, etc. that can go into six figures, appearance fees and, most importantly if you can stick around a few years, an NBA pension.

The Jazz were quoted again today saying they were not sure how many they would open with on the roster, and with the economic woes from the country spreading to sports, it is possible they could cut further.  However the five cuts to make Wesley one of the 14 players on the roster sure feels good, and means he is purely fighting the economy to be on the team, having dispatched of Syracuse's Paul Harris and 2nd round draft pick Groan Suton of Michigan State and three other veterans for the 14-man roster.  The lead blog on the Jazz website lays out a great case for why Wesley should stay, including quotes from Coach Sloan and Deron Williams.

The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

Nobody can or will say how long Wesley Matthews will be staying in Utah, but the undrafted rookie from Marquette will be on the Jazz's opening night roster.

"What I would say is he's on the team for a while," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said Friday.

This was a great example of a "perfect fit" for Matthews, right down to the coach. Matthews is a Jerry Sloan type of player. I think Wesley can be a poor man's Tyrone Corbin for the Jazz.

Corbin played in the NBA for about 15 years, Dr. Naismith. I'd say Matthews would sign up for half that good of a career.
