I'm a frequent reader and confessed infrequent poster, but I was wondering if any other MU fans around here caught a recent show segment from the Big Unit on 1250 AM (...You know. The guy whose main sponsor evidently deals primarily with male impotence...).
The segment dealt with the Big 10 wanting to use MSG for their basketball tournament. Evidently, if I heard it right after coming in late, the UW hacks at 1250 want the Big 10 to get first dibs on the primary dates, the best times, etc., because it's the superior conference over the once great Big East. The idea that the midwest-centric Big 10 has as much business playing in NYC as I do swinging for the fences at The Masters.
I know it's 1250 taking a full-on Big 10/UW bias over local rival and MU station 540, but am I missing something? Outside of UW, who are the Final Four threats from the all-powerful Big 10?
Alternatively, you can just tell me I wasted 10 minutes of my life listening to 1250 and should get on with business. That works, too.
-
The Big Unit is a big a**hole. He reminds me of Beling just talks over everyone and makes sure it is him who is the main attraction.
Never listen to anything on 1250 and your life will be much better.
-
I'm not sure what a Final Four 'threat' has to do with MSG? Its all about the Benjamins.
Big Unit is such a deek---cant stand the guy.
-
The BE has this little thing called a contract to use the Garden during those dates for the next several years. So if the B1G want to start offering the BE $$$ (and it would need to be a lot of them) to buy out the BE contract, only then could it happen.
This is typical sports talk, make an irrelevant argument (how good the B1G is versus the BE) to justify something that has nothing to do with it (the BE contract to have its tourney in the Garden).
-
So, the Big 10 has a Big East contract to contend with – and don't tune to 1250. I learned two important lessons today.
-
The Big East’s contract to hold its postseason tournament at Madison Square Garden runs through 2026.

A good rule of thumb is to never listen to sports talk radio. I can't think of a single program that isn't terrible.

FIFY.

If the big unit is on 1250, does anyone actually hear him?

I think Boers and Bernstein on the Score are good. But there's more bad than good out there. Especially on Troll-50.

Wow, really? To each their own. I can't stand either one of them, they're a couple of smug chuckleheads (who aren't remotely funny).

Same description applies to Chuck and Wickett. They've become unlistenable.

The only sports talk I will listen to while driving. If they're not on, music is.

Carmen and Jurko are my go to.

I like their brutal honesty. And I'm a big fan of hosts that have no time for stupid callers.

They are smug and rude to their callers. Just because someone has a different viewpoint it doesn't make them an idiot. I understand that's their routine but it's not for me.
As far as 1250 their whole broadcasting strategy is to say something controversial to rile people up. If you can see through that, then the afternoon show is ok as long as they talk about the packers.

Fully agree. They must take an IQ test. If it is over 80 they don't get the job.

Sports talk radio is why God invented the iPod (and then improved upon it with smartphones and other portable music devices).
I can't remember the last time I listened to sports talk radio, but I listen to my tunes every time I turn the ignition key, and I think everybody who knows me would agree I'm a happy guy!

Homer True does a good job. That being said, I haven't listened to him in quite some time.
-
Big unit is decent for packer coverage. Although, he may just seem good compared to the guys below. Could imagine if these two chumbolones started talking sports at a tavern. I'd move seats.

For Marquette he does. Otherwise he just picks a packer topic and takes calls on it for 2 hours.

Homer is great on the call for MU.
I find his talk show the complete opposite.
Most of the local Chicago sports talk is terrible.

Overall BB is solid, but Bernstein is far smarter and funnier than Boers who can come across as a smug prick.
Tony Kornheiser show was good. Really enjoyed it when he was on in Chicago a decade ago.

They are good together. When either one of them is gone, it isn't very good. There are times I tire of them and turn them off for a day or two, but I listen to them regularly.

Back in the '80s, he was the best around. Now, I wouldn't waste my time.

I was shuffling through stations one morning driving to work, and heard on 99.1 they have a segment called "Straight Guy Mike" done by Wickett. It was the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I believe the male host on that show is gay, so Wickett gives the Straight perspective. I couldn't believe it.

That's great. Which one is wickett? The one with the fedora? You think he's even been laid?

Bernstein "absolutely guaranteed" Kobe was coming to the Bulls 5 or 6 years ago. That's some brutal honesty right there.

Really? You have to go back 5-6 years to pull out one incident to try to discredit someone?
No one gets them all right. If my own critics would need to reach back 5 years every time I was wrong, I'd be pretty happy with that.

The Creeper and the Billy Ray Cyrus clone?

Bernstein isn't a reporter. He has no reputable sources. He is a talking head. If you like his style in that role, great. If not, great. But to applaud or criticize his "reporting" would be like criticizing Don Imus for the same thing.

They usually don't attack those with different viewpoints, it's those that are completely ridiculous, or are the dumbest people in the world. They are lightning rods for those fans because of their staunch stances.
Thursday and Friday were absolute great radio, I podcasted it from Mexico and enjoyed it on my flight home.

You wasted 10 minutes of your life listening to 1250 but, thankfully, only one minute of mine. I like that ratio.

WI sports radio is:

Packers Draft
Brewers

Packers Training Camp
Badger Basketball
Packers Golf Outing
Marquette

I listen to 1250 simply because my auxiliary jack in my car broke and I don't feel like putting in the slight effort it would take to figure out how to fix it. The radio is so awful for music in Milwaukee that I just choose to listen to 1250 because it's the only sports radio station I know in Milwaukee. I take it for what it is, some guys who talk about things in order to get listeners. I get a good laugh out of it most days.
On a side not, 1250 interviews Josh Sitton every Tuesday (at least during the season) at about 4:45 PM. He is an outstanding interview. He doesn't exactly hide the fact that he can't stand McCarthy's play calling and wants to run the ball a lot more than the Packers do.
I also like listening to Leroy. You can tell he doesn't take that job/the show seriously and just has fun with it. But he does provide good input the few times he does get serious about it.
-
Tony Kornheiser show was good.
I admit I never heard his show then but am surprised to see his name and "good" in the same sentence

I don't understand how anybody can listen to them.

Well... it's not "the dog ate my homework," but you do get D- for effort.
