Sam Dekker talking some sh!t about MU today. He should spend more time working on his three point shot and less time hanging out with Aaron Rodgers. https://twitter.com/dekker/status/904404877593284608

How about Oates response. Wow.

I don't know who is a bigger clown---Tom Oates or Sam Dicker?

How can one be that big of a homer and pretend to be a journalist?

Oates, been on him all summer about his Brewer takes...
-
Those comments are great--those fans don't even know basic college basketball knowledge.

Professionalism is overrated. Petulance...now that sells papers. Oh that's right, that can't even sell papers anymore.
That's one sad "professional".

I just finished reading this whole thread by people who have even thinner skin.
Can't believe people actually get bothered by this.

I love a swipe at UW, but this made MU fans look as petty as Frank and Dekker.
That said, Oates is a pathetic excuse for a journalist.

Agreed, Dekker comes off far better than anyone attempting to defend Marquette.
Who is MUBBNation, do they post here?
-
Oates is a real tool, he wants to be Bo Ryan!
-
Sheesh. A lot of hatred in those tweets. I love it.
-
Big whatever on Dekker's bulletin board material.
Oates on the other hand is lucky he made it through the Buzz era without printing something that got national media coverage and lost him his job. He's a joke and it'll happen sooner or later.
-
He works for the Wisconsin State Journal. That means he's bordering on irrelevancy anyway.
-
Those JUCOs that on average are making about 50x what Oates makes?
-
So we're just overlooking the fact that Buzz told Dekker to take a hike? That seems like a pretty big recruiting gaffe. You can say what you want but Dekker was a good player.
Everyone is also overlooking the tweet immediately before., where he counters a Badger fan saying MU is irrelevant
Sam Dekkerā€¸Verified account @dekker 21h21 hours ago
I mean, they're always relevant. I don't actually hate Marquette, just like getting people excitable.
-
In Madison they don't have journalists covering the Badgers, just fan boys and cheerleaders.
-

I don't think anyone is out here defending Buzz. He had some pretty clear recruiting deficiencies when it came to recruiting high school kids.

Not overlooked, but it's not exactly news.

It doesn't surprise me. We all know that Buzz like to recruit toughness, grit, and athleticism and for the most part didn't recruit many finesse type players. He told Scott Christopherson that he wasn't going to get any playing time for Marquette and encouraged him to transfer. He ended up going to Marquette West (IAST) and was an immediate starter and three point sniper that we sorely could have used on some of our teams. But Buzz was probably right, the style of ball he wanted to play wasn't going to allow Christopherson to see the floor. Say what you want about Buzz but he knew the players that were and weren't going to work for his system.
Insert joke about traditionals here:

Not a joke, but the only "traditional" Buzz signed out of high school at MU was the famous Brett Roseboro. His track record is similar at VT.

A trip back in time...Sam committed to UW after his sophomore year. He played for UW's farm system AAU team who was Adidas sponsored. He had just grown four inches. Tokoto was the jewel of that AAU team.
He had scholarship offers from Bradley, UW-Milwaukee, Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa

If by "immediate starter" you mean "after a year of sitting out and getting acclimated, he came off the bench more often than he started games in his second year on campus".
Yes, in that first year he shot well from outside - 45/105 for 42.9%. But that year we had plenty of guys who could do similar or better, including: Cubillan 49/119 41.2%, DJO 73/154 47.4%, Mo Acker 51/103 49.5%.
Others capable of hitting a shot from outside were Jimmy, Buycks and Lazar.
We shot 41.3% 3FG%... fifth best in the nation. SC no matta.

Exactly. Dekker committed way early as soon as UW offered him, and then he exploded. Let's not play too much monday morning QB with that.

By "immediate starter" I meant that in his first year that he was eligible to play at Iowa State he was in the top 5 for minutes played on his team, which I shorthanded to starter. And before you say "that's not what a starter is" I don't care. That's what I define as a starter because its much more relevant information than who the first five players on the court. And IIRC, he did start some games in his first year so even by that definition he was a starter.
I also wasn't aware you could have too many three point threats on a team. All I said I was we could have used him. You brought up 09-10, what about 10-11? In what would have been SC's senior year with us, we shot an average 34.9% from three that season. SC's 84 3PM and 44.1% 3P% would have led our team in both categories. His eFG% of 54.6% would have been 4th on the team, behind Oxtule and Jae. I hear eFG reigns supreme.
All I'm saying is that SC was a quality player who was good enough to have a role on our team. Because he didn't match the play style Buzz was looking to run, he was encouraged to transfer.
-

OK. We just define things differently. I call someone who starts a "starter". Your view is that a player need not start to be a "starter".
When the PA announcer says, "starting for the Aggies" you disagree as he runs down the list of names. I say... "yep, those are the starters". ;D
(the rest I agree with - SC could have been a nice piece for MU)

Until today, I did not know that there were different definitions of "starter".
I always thought a starter was.......a starter. They say ya learn something everyday.

In "The World According to Tamu" our starters last year were Sam, Katin, Luke, JJJ and Cheatham. Markus (6th in minutes) doesn't make the cut.
SC was a good player. If he would have been happy being a 15 minute a game specialist he could have helped MU. Starter minutes wouldn't have been available to him, though, so he made the right choice to go to MU West.

Didn't someone random often start over Crowder? Or Gardner? In retrospect nobody considers that player a starter because he didn't play starter minutes and essentially was there because our main guy would pick up early fouls. I think TAMU is working from that perspective.
-
Starters no matta.

If you can think of shorthand term for "player who was top five on his team in minutes played" I'd be happy to use it. I used to say "played starter level minutes" but even that is clunky.
Starting no matta....see Williams, Erik.

Fair enough, but even by your definition SC was a starter ;D

Makes Markus' scoring all the more impressive doesn't it?
And according to the traditional definition of starter, every scholarship player besides Sandy Cohen was a starer last season. Seems kind of meaningless to me.

Which sounds exactly like how this conversation started.

Maybe it's just me, but does any program's athletes have more of a complex after graduation than UW's seem to have about Marquette? Both Frank and Dekker take swipes at Marquette every chance they get. One tweet online is enough to get them induced into an hours-long tweet storm of bitterness and angst. Is that a product of their coach, their fans, or just fragile personalities?
I just don't get why they choose to always engage and troll these things. I don't see that from other professional athletes all that much. Maybe the occasional jab, but it usually ends with that. Frank and Sam, on the other hand, are hypertrolls. If they weren't still playing, I imagine they'd be on these message boards as much as we are, posting anti-MU rants with the same frequency as Erik the Red and bbfran combined.
-

TAMU mentioned him but wasn't in answering your question. It was Erik Williams. There was someone else too. I want to say Juan filled that role. Otule always started for the jump ball and would be subbed out quickly.

Yep Starters and Alternators.
-
Fair enough, but even by your definition SC was a starter ;D
Nope. You said he was an "immediate starter". He was a bench guy until conf play.
"Immediate starter" to a reasonable person would mean a guy who started from day 1. That isn't the fact pattern here
-
In the end, I suspect we can all agree that Scott was a solid contributor at ISU.......

I think you missed my point. I expect fans to act in that way. Fans are more prone to the immature, reactionary type response that leads to threads like this. For us, Marquette/UW is something that continues every year. Every time we play, every recruiting battle we get involved in, every tournament we use as a measuring stick, it's constant. There are Marquette fans on some of our websites that seem to talk about Wisconsin almost as much as they do Marquette and there are definitely Wisconsin fans on the Badger boards that talk about Marquette more than they do Wisconsin. That's the nature of a rivalry and fandom.
But how often do the athletes get caught up in it? Athletes specifically, with their own pro careers to worry about? And when they do, how often does it carry over to years and years after their college careers are over? When's the last time Jae, Jimmy, or Wade got to bashing Wisconsin on social media? Sure, there was the jab from Wes Matthews at the 100th, but that was a private event. Do ex UNC/Duke guys go out of their way to bash the other schools on social media? Does the UK/Louisville rivalry continue over Twitter years after the fact?
Maybe I'm ignorant to it because this is the rivalry I tend to focus on, but it seems like most of these guys are wise enough to not play the petty fan game after their college career is over.
-
I think Bocephys is right. They know they can get a rise out of the Marquette fanbase and do it intentionally.

So Cam Marotta was one of the top 5 minute getters on the team last season? Because I know he was a non-starter. In fact, he, Deon Franklin, and Sandy Cohen were the only non-starters last season.

UW fans are the same and go nuts, but you don't see Marquette players provoking. The point is that I can't think of any other group of players so motivated to provoke.

Scott C was not an immediate starter at ISU, as you said. He did not start immediately. You can attempt to redefine starter all you wish, but SC was not an immediate starter as you said.

Short and sweet.....but deceptive. Everyone's got an opinion, TAMUs got a good argument for his. Can we agree to disagree? Can we all just get along?

Scott C was not an immediate starter at ISU, as you said. He did not start immediately. You can attempt to redefine starter all you wish, but SC was not an immediate starter as you said.
I'm not getting into another definitions fight with you. Starter to me means the 5 players who play "starter level minutes." I know what I meant and I stand by it. If you don't like it:
I don't know why we do this on Scoop constantly. We pick out individual tiny details of each other's arguments that we disagree with and focus on those, instead of focusing on the actual argument that all (or at least most of us) agree with. I'm guilty of it too. The argument I made in this case was that SC could have been a nice player for us but Buzz didn't think he matched our play style and both sides were probably better for it. Jay Bee has agreed with this, Lenny has agreed with this despite both disagreeing with my assertion that SC was an immediate starter for IAST. I think most people agree with the main argument. Why waste time writing repeated posts about vocabulary? Jay Bee challenged it, which made sense. I explained what I meant. He acknowledged we had different definitions but agreed with main argument. That could have easily been the entire conversation. What's the point of repeatedly asserting that someone else is wrong about a small detail when that person has already explained what they meant and isn't going to change their mind? Can we get scoop points for getting someone else to admit they were wrong on the internet?
Short and sweet.....but deceptive. Everyone's got an opinion, TAMUs got a good argument for his. Can we agree to disagree? Can we all just get along?
Amen brother 4everC.
With that, I'll get off my soapbox.
-
Core players
Typically starters and/or minutes leaders and/or statistical leaders.
Rotation players
Consistently get double digit minutes; sometimes defacto starters.
End of bench
Sparsely get meaningful minutes.
There can also be high level and low level subdivisions in these groups.

Here's the huge problem with TAMU's fib -- he used it to try & make an argument.
The reality is that not only was SC not an immediate starter, but he only got to start because of a rare, bizarre circumstance. Lucca Staiger had started all games... then in early January he quit school & went overseas to play professionally.
That gave SC the opportunity.

MUBB Nation is a student I believe and I am sure they post here. Started innocent enough but reading all of Sam's tweets he wasn't saying anything to rile anyone up...Just eventually turned into UW fans vs MU fans and then the Oates thing set people off even further.
It is what it is...The UW fan base would like to think there is no rivalry. They think that recency trumps program history. MU has a better history UW has been better the last 5-10 years. 66-56 overall....67-56 after this year. All I care about is what happens on the floor.

I actually didn't know that about Staiger, thanks for the context. But even with Staiger there, SC was in the top 5 players for minutes played. When Staiger was there SC averaged 21.4 minutes per game, more than Justin Hamilton, the guy who got to take the opening tip.
But again, I've already explained what I meant by immediate starter and you agreed that my actual argument was correct. SC was a nice player who Buzz decided didn't match our play style.
Random side note, I didn't realize that despite being a sub .500 team, that 09-10 Iowa State roster featured three guys (Craig Brackins, Diante Garrett, and Justin Hamilton) who all got cups of coffee in the NBA. Brackins was even a first round pick!

It's two current students that run an account as a superfan account of sorts. They retweet and comment a lot on the Anonymous Eagle, Paint Touches, and Cracked Sidewalks content.
Basically, they started tweak Sam back, Oates dropped an assine twitter bomb and everyone went hyperbolic....so you know normal social media.
The funniest outcome of all this to me is all the Badger fans who claim to not care getting all bent out of shape because Marquette fans do care.

Yo, chili my man. Thankfully I'm on the south side and hurricane past north, mountain range in the middle helps protect the area and it past further north than expected. Only two tiny islands that are part of PR got spanked good. We are without electrical power or internet probably for a couple of days. Otherwise all ok. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts.

Great to hear!
I used to have to visit one of our manufacturing plants in the mountains in Aibonito. You would drive up this road big enough for two vehicles and hope a tractor trailer wasn't on it's way down. Everyone avoided drives at night down the road.
There was an overlook I remember visiting that was supposedly the only spot in PR where you could see the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Glad to hear you and family are good. Great sign you are on Scoop!

Great to hear!
I used to have to visit one of our manufacturing plants in the mountains in Aibonito. You would drive up this road big enough for two vehicles and hope a tractor trailer wasn't on it's way down. Everyone avoided drives at night down the road.

Which plant did you have to go? Use to travel all those small country roads in the mountains to go to projects. Those mountains have saved the southern part of the island from a lot of storms

Harvey Hubbell Caribe, Inc. (Had a Bryant Electric sign in front before that.) It closed probably 8-10 years ago.
Hubbell's main plant is in Vega Baja. That is still open. I used to like visiting there. They put us in a house with a pool in a gated community on the beach in Dorado.

Rare is the only way to eat steak. Otherwise, might as well eat a shoe.

I never got to stay in the Dorado Resort with the golf course. That was reserved for corporate guys.
I just liked to visit the Grande Supermarket and load up on Yaucano to take home with me.

No. I changed jobs 10 years ago and that ended that.
I was actually in discussion to return there last hear with a friend who is now a boss, but another interesting opportunity came up before they could guarantee a more senior engineering position.
I like Medalla also. I've never seen stateside except occasionally in Publix in Florida.

Too light for me, but is good beer. My brother has a nano brewery and his Blonde Ale is being canned in Wisconsin. Has the Blonde, Pale, an IPA and six seasonals. If you get to come down lmk.

You can have your steak any way you like. But many professional chefs would disagree that rare is the only or best way to prepare and eat a steak. For one, it depends on the cut. In general, I find medium rare brings out a steak's best flavor.
If your steak tastes anything like a shoe, either you're buying really low-quality meat or simply not cooking it right.

Good articles. Many places don't know how to cook a rare steak. I probably like my steak on the rare side of medium rare.
At Manny's in Mpls they cook a true rare steak. The center is truly cool. I tell them cook it to rare, and count to 18. It comes out perfect. Gotta have a white hot fire to for cooking a steak. Best steak I ever made was cooked over a birch wood fire. Let the fire go for about an hour before cooking. Fabulous.

Marcus is crazy sensitive when it comes to his meat, hey?
I'm at my downtown place today, 2 blocks from Manny's. Was gonna make tacos but a steak (medium) is tempting.
Nonetheless, go Seahawks!!

No medium, bro. Medium = the dark side.

If I think about it, I can still hear Sid espousing the wonders of the "Silver Butterknife Steak" ... and I haven't heard his radio show in more than 20 years.
As for cooking a steak ...
I like mine a little on the medium side of medium-rare - warm and pink in the middle (insert sex joke here). I am a pretty darn good griller - just made some steaks the other day and everybody was raving about them. They were tender and juicy because we bought very good cuts and I didn't overcook them - just turned each of 'em once. Yum.
If one cooks a steak exactly that way and it tastes like "shoe leather," it probably was a shytty cut of meat and still would have tasted horrible no matter how it was cooked.

Silver Butterknife Steak is Murray's, not Manny's - but there is considerable debate over which is the best steakhouse in town. Mine is Manny's - not just for the steak but for the other stuff - the bacon appetizer and the lobster cakes are amazing, and we always top it off with Bailey's cake. I even had them make a whole Bailey's cake for my birthday once.
I consider Manny's to be the best restaurant to go to in Minneapolis, if someone else is paying.
