TJO has this team at 12-0 with wins over Xavier, Creighton and Iowa. Following a 2-22 season last year and a rebuilt roster this year. I don't think he was given any serious hiring consideration by MU this spring (other than mentions by a couple of scoopers)
How is he doing it ? Is he really that good, just lucky, or something else ?

He's was very active in the transfer market. And he's a good coach.
-
Quality coach.
Found transfers to fit the existing infrastructure.
Experienced team.
11th easiest schedule in America.

Recruited da guard outta Racine who wee kneeded ta get, aina?

Another plug for the Goodman Hummel podcast, but he was on last week. Sounds like an awesome dude. Nate Oats was on the week before, which was another great interview and gave lots of insight on what Marquette is trying to do with their offense.

Nate Oats was an assistant during TJO’s senior season at UW-Whitewater.

Hard to believe Marquette didn’t recruit him. I heard it was his dream school but didn’t want to come because it’s too dangerous

Glad ur finally startin' two komprihend, hey?

TJO was hired at ISU the day before we fired Wojo. Although, maybe he loves ISU after his time there and would have picked ISU no matter the timing.
I think some were underwhelmed by his time at UNLV. Also, wondering how much of his South Dakota State success was due to Mike Daum.
I would have been excited if we hired him. I’m very excited with Shaka though.

TJO works the edges a little too much for MU and probably a little too much for the Big East (except Creighton). He’s going to do great at Iowa State.

I almost read into your post that Marquette didn't recruit Hunter hard.

The great ones don't need teal.

Gonna get a real chance to see what he and ISU are all about in the next month. Baylor, TTU twice, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma all within the first 3 weeks of Jan.

Thanks!

Marquette DID recruit Hunter. And Tyrese said it to my face that Marquette was where he wanted to be (in the fall of 2019).
Then COVID hit. His recruiting stock kept rising. I never had a chance to talk to Tyrese again about his recruitment, but I got the sense from his friends that something changed in the relationship between him and Wojo/staff. Don't know what, but I mentioned (in spring 2021) wishing Tyrese had picked Marquette and his friends laughed at me for thinking he would even think about considering us again.
I love that kid, because he's a decent young man and I've seen him mature a ton. Plus he's a helluva basketball player. I really would love to have seen in blue and gold. But it ain't happening. Wojo pissed him off and he hasn't forgotten it. That's how kids are.
On the other hand, y'all need to GET OVER IT.

His high school is within blocks of a neighborhood that is basically 'gang central' in Racine. So I doubt that was a factor.
IMO, Wojo is the reason he isn't at MU.

Eye blame Woj, hey?

I used to eat at Hoy Ping a lot. Many times over the years in MKE I'd run out of money before the month was finished. They fed me on credit and weren't very particular about what I owed them when the new month arrived and I had some funds. When I graduated (and had some cash), I stopped in on my way out of MKE to try to give them a present, and they wouldn't take it. I finally got them to take it for the kids. Before I got out of there there were some moist eyes. Beautiful people.

TJO said on the pod that Oats came the spring that he was graduating, so they didn't interact much?
-
TJO used to be really good at organizing softball teams back in the day.

What's the point of this thread?
Some newbie poster is turning against the current coach after 13 games because another new coach at another school has a better record?
Why hasn't the school hired Mark Few and/or Jay Wright?

Ban all people with less than 100 posts. Put people with 100 to 1000 posts on super secret probation. That will solve the problem!

TJO was named coach at UWM and was bringing his wife to a press conference when the AD at UWM called him and told him they couldn't hire him and was going to hire
Baldwin instead.
-
If we hired him, and he brought in one of our former stud players as an assistant ... whattayaknow, we'da gone from Wojo to TJO and DJO.

The AD at UWM offered the head coaching job at UWM in 2016 and TJO accepted but the Chancellor at UWM vetoed the AD on hiring TJO.
After the AD's first choice was was vetoed by the Chancellor, UWM hired LaVall Jordan who coached at UWM for 1 season before leaving in June, 2017 to Butler.
After LaVall Jordan, UWM hired Pat Baldwin who currently has a record of 50-78 at UWM.

Just picked up a transfer from Georgetown.

Reminds me of UWGB wanting to hire Greg Gard, but the UW system requires that all jobs are posted for a minimum of two weeks.
After going through applications and interviews, they pivoted to Linc Darner instead.

I don't think that is quite accurate. I think Gard was in the mix for the UWGB job when Wardle got it due to them publicly interviewing finalists because of how they managed the search.
Gard was pretty much already the coach in waiting in Madison when they hired Darner.

Or that DJ Carton was going to be the incumbent. At IA State he would be the starter from day 1.

Every successful coach Marquette has ever had “worked the edges”. TBH, just about every successful CBB coach in my lifetime has worked the edges. Lots of unsuccessful ones, too - it’s where a lot of the best players can be found.

Iowa St lost by 5 to Baylor same day MU lost to Creighton by 5. iowa St also beat Creighton on the road in December. Just Sayin.

ISU was never in the game. final score line much closer than the actual contest.

They’re going to get pretty banged up in the B12. They don’t have enough guys who can make a bucket other than Isaiah.
