Questions For Homer For Wednesday's (Jan 29) Chat With Buzz
« on: January 27, 2014, 03:22:36 PM »
Homer, I'm not going to laundry list specific questions, but rather a general comment.

Many here have been wondering about the back-court.  Why doesn't Mayo get more minutes (or start)?  Why did Dawson only get 8 minutes against Nova?  Once JJJ is healed, how much time will he get?  Would you slide Jamil down to the 2 with Devante/Otule/Taylor as the front court?  Is a back-court of Jake and Derrick taking the bulk of the minutes the best back-court MU can play this year?

Could you ask Buzz to comment on the back-court rotation/minutes in order to give us fans a insight into his thinking?

Why was DG out at the 3 pt line on a smaller shooter and DW under the basket on a bigger player on more than one defensive situation---especially considering that they had ample time to switch?

I'm gonna repeat my question from last time:

With all the new talent coming in next semester, are there any plans for an overseas trip or something similar to help the team get used to playing with each other?

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Buzz,

In the upcoming game with Providence if our defense does not stop Cotton/Batts will you go to a more offensive backcourt? Is defense more than 50% of the game and if so why?

What is the biggest weakness, or area for improvement with this team? What do they do best?

Why does this team not go as hard after 50/50 balls like teams in years past? They do not seam to like diving on the floor.

After breaking down the film of the Villanova game, was the difficulty in defending the pick and roll because of:
(A)  Poor job of the guards of stopping the dribble.
(B) Poor hedging by the bigs.
(C) Poor weakside help.
(D)  give Nova props, they're really good.

This may sound like a dumb question, but I'm serious...how are our players holding up with this weather? I imagine guys from warmer areas of the country may have a tendency to get a little more miserable than the guys from the upper Midwest.

Depends on the provider and whether you are streaming or terrestrial radio.  Should be about 5-10 seconds apart but can sync them pretty easy by pausing the tv feed(assuming radio is trailing which it usually is)

the longer delay for Mac's dump button makes the syncing harder.

Homer, how's your neck?

Homer:  540 doesn't come in well in Whitefish Bay, so I stream it on the internet.  The stream is way behind, upwards of 60-90 seconds.   The DVR comes in handy there, but it's a PITA to sync it up.

After John Dawson played so poised and well, in your words against Georgetown while leading the team to victory in overtime - why was he limited to 8 minutes against Villanova?

In the wake of the atrocious defense against Villanova - in a game where Derrick Wilson played 36 minutes - what attributes does Derrick bring defensively that offset his limitations offensively, to where you continue to play 4 on 5 for 30+ minutes on the offensive end of the court?

Buzz, after having Luke Fisher now in practice, now do you see using him?  Does he have a mid-range game like Devante has now?  Or is he mainly a back to the basket type of player?  Secondly, is Duane Wilson 100% now, do you see him as a point guard or can play the two as well?

At least 15 seconds, but never really timed it.

Lots of concerns expressed by some here that Gardner's defense is very poor--how does Buzz assess his defense, and in what areas, if any has he shown improvement?

+1 on this one...How tough is this team? Do they consistently play anywhere near as hard as they are capable, or as hard as you wold like?

What is tougher for you as a coach, handling adversity or handling success?  Which is easier to develop in a team?

Additionally, if you had one thing "back" for this year that you lost what would it be?
(examples:  Vander, McKay, healthy STj all season, healthy Duane Wilson all season, etc)

An observation & a question:

The (potentially flawed) observation:
You have a history of tweaking the offense, tempo and rotations to fit a variety of teams.

For instance the 3 amigos played differently than the all midget backcourt which played differently than subsequent teams.

The question:
What have you learned about this team as the season has progressed? How does it need to play to stand the best chance of winning?
