Several of us enjoy poking fun, but that's an interesting, legit question.

There is no doubt he was overhyped - he only lived up to the billing in a handful of games. There also is no doubt he has regressed even though he's being coached by a Hall of Famer and is surrounded by top talent.

He's pretty much a poster boy for "be careful what you ask for."
.
But Jay Bilas said : "Joey is going to have a big, big, year".  What was he referring to or do you know?

I like Bilas and I think he's pretty knowledgeable in general, but he says a lot of dopey things.

For example, he famously (infamously?) pimped Froling as a difference-maker for Marquette, and he kept insisting that Josh Gasser was gonna have a long NBA career, among other silliness.

If I had to guess, Bilas had a conversation with Izzo and just parroted what Izzo told him about Joey.

It makes you wonder what Izzo was thinking?  As you said I haven't seen much progression if any since he left MU.

Izzo was probably saying that to try and build Joey’s confidence.  It’s a common coaching tactic.  It just hasn’t worked

I used to like Bilas but the 'dopey' comments are too frequent for me anymore. He's not much different than Vital in my book; just a ESPN shill who want to be friends with the coaches and ESPN conferences. Any guise of independent reporting or commentary was over years ago.

As for Joey, I hope he works hard to get his degree and finds a good spot in the world for himself. The odds to become a good college player, much less a NBA player, are very long. His story is the most common one in basketball.

At least Bilas doesn't scream his dopey comments the way Dickie V used to. Nor does Bilas go on and on about how great all of his coaching buddies are. My main problem with Bilas now is that he spends a large percentage of each broadcast ripping the refs. When replay shows the refs might have been wrong, Bilas gets on a rant; when replay shows he was wrong, he says nothing. It's lazy and makes him look less knowledgeable.

I started feeling sorry for Joey a year ago.

Said it before, say it again: the Hauser boys' decision to transfer worked out for absolutely no one.
Joey's become a shell of what he could have been.
Sam wasted a year of earning potential sitting on Virginia's bench.
Markus' senior year was wasted.
Wojo got fired.
And they all remain 0-fer in the NCAA tournament.

To be fair Markus's senior year would've been wasted either way. Let's say Sam (and Joey?) remain, Covid still hits and shuts down the year and we likely are sitting around like Dayton fans saying "we were for sure a final four team!"

But yeah I agree it's benefited nobody except maybe Bennett during the regular season.

What if the butterfly effect of the Hausers leaving caused COVID?
Regardless, it would have been a much better senior year had they stayed.

maybe Joey is what he is and everyone on this board who were obsessed with a high school kid and now spend their time mocking him and name calling were the ones who were wrong. I mean, the scouts have never been wrong on recruits before, have they?

Markus got his. It wasn't wasted for him.

I love nothing more than someone posting on a message board largely about high school and college aged kids, ripping on people for obsessing over high school and college age kids.

Worked out for Marquette. Got rid of Wojo and got Shaka. Also worked out for Wojo to the tune of ~$8M dollar buy out.

Joey was honored by Michigan State on senior day, and he got the start against Maryland.

He could play another year if he wants to, but maybe he told them he's had enough "fun" in Spartyland? Actually, an article on mlive.com says he and MSU's other seniors who were honored haven't made decisions about their futures yet.

From the article:

Hauser joined Michigan State as a transfer a year after the rest of Michigan State’s senior class. After being forced to sit out a year due to transfer rules then playing what he admitted was a difficult year under COVID-19 restrictions, Hauser said he’s rediscovered a love of basketball as a senior.

“Last year was a long year after COVID,” Hauser said. “That really took a lot of joy out of basketball, and this year has helped me find it a lot. I’m just really soaking in this year, getting things back to normal.”

Joey’s last Big 14 game line:

0 points
0-4, 0-3 from 3
4 boards
1 assist
5 personal fouls

I’d be outraged if my coach gave 21 minutes to the player who had that line, too.
