Don't be silly. It just makes him taller.

Guess running Jimmy and Dwight away pays off

Last 3 years prepaid for no services aka Wojo??

Excellent news! This should put a damper on the Shaka to (insert job opening) rumors on this board for at least a couple of weeks. 👀

Good indeed. It's those extensions occurring in March when big jobs are open that are the kiss of death.
-
Great news.
This will also make it easier for Shaka to adopt more high-level players so we don't have to use scholarships on them.

especially so he can redshirt a bunch of them...

We extended a guy who lost as a 2 seed to a 7???

Bam!!!

Awesome. As an aside, the EXTENDED graphic made me chuckle out loud.

no worries, he’ll be the Badgers coach soon. Extension makes RED pay big.
-
great news all around...establishing relationships/recruiting!!
-
Knot sure wee needta know all dis personal info 'bout Shaka, hey?
-
Coach Shaka has changed Marquette basketball.
Keep it up coach!
-
Love it. I think Shaka could end up becoming our longest tenured coach since Bill Chandler (not sure Shaka has another 20 seasons in him to pass him)
-
Smart move by MU and Shaka
-
Think of it as renewing marriage vows.
-
Good to see MU taking care of business on this.

Yep. It's simply what happens. And obviously it doesn't mean the Shaka-Marquette marriage will last until 2030. He could take us to great heights and leave, with his new employer paying the buyout; or things could go bad, fans could start booing him, and rich MU alums would pay the buyout.
Still, it sends a positive message to recruits -- Shaka can look them in the eye and honestly say, "I just signed an extension through what would be your entire time at Marquette" ... and that's worth something.

Remember how excited we all were when Wojo got an extension.

No. Some of us were absolutely baffled by the amateur hour move made be the former incompetent "leadership" at MU.
Extending Shaka? No-brainer, and totally deserved and earned.

It's the same leadership - Lovell and Scholl.

To be fair, the extension helped improve the quality of recruiting in the last couple of years of Wojo's tenure. There is an element of truth to the idea that better recruits were unwilling to commit to a coach who didn't have a longer-term contract in place.
That's changed somewhat now that immediate eligibility for transfers is in place.
-

Yup. Whether Wojo was killing it at Marquette or was awful, you don't just let a college coach's contract expire. That's just not how it works.

Yeeeaaah, maybe not. Coaching Contracts are made to be broken.

I'm just imagining him recruiting Otule..."Oh really? I'll take the under"
-

Correct. Which is why getting upset about an extension is silly. We don't know the details of the extension. It could make it easier for the school to get out of the coach's contract. But you can still tell recruits "I'm signed through XXXX."

And in the end, Wojo's 2019 extension hardly got in the way when it came time to cut ties less than two years later.

by the coach...shaka gets what he wants in this one.

Nah. We’d have no prob terming a contract early, at a high cost. We just shelled out over $9 million for a guy to take a walk 3 years early

We? We?
OK, seriously....Shaka has silenced all doubters other than trolls like nolonger and other whackos. I cannot imagine a scenario where Marquette says "adios, amigo".
-

I get that...probably wasn't clear in my point. People are questioning the terms of the contract...I'm saying it's easy for the coach to walk...not so cheap/easy for the school to walk. It seemed like people were alluding to the possibility that the contract was extended but in a meaningless way that wouldn't make MU more in debt to Shaka. Shaka came to the table with all the power in this one...
-
Shaka just had one of the better interviews I've ever seen regarding his extension and outlook ahead for this team.

WOW! ;D
That was a beautiful speech by Shaka, I can not think of a better Coach to play for then him, he is the real deal!
-
Typically great press conference from Shaka. Second half is where things get interesting.
Loved the Sir Mohammed shout out. Wonder if they timed up this announcement with his visit. Could be an indication they’re very serious about him.
-
Sure sounds like MU is not hitting the transfer market.

I think the fits would be limited, but could be pursued if they exist. Wouldn’t be some dude looking for a starting role

I thought the Scholl part was really good too.

We?? You got a mouse in your pocket?
-
I’ll admit when I saw the timeline at the bottom of the screen say the press conference was 32 minutes long I thought there’s no way I’m watching the whole thing. Next thing I know, the time line was at 31 minutes and I some how like Shaka more than I did 33 minutes ago.
-

I think that’s been clear for a while

Agreed.

RC caught some big ones with that bait
-
MU Eng
I felt the same way. At the start I was looking to see how I could fast forward and could not figure it out and ended being disappointed it was not longer. The words and confidence that Shaka shows is really impressive. I had crazy high expectations when was hired and he has not disappointed me. He has taken a far different approach than I expected, and he proven to be correct in how he wants to build a program. He was one impressive man, IMO.
-
It's the same leadership - Lovell and Scholl.
Lol. I'd chalked up that dumb move to extend Wojo shortly after winning the lame Preseason NIT tournament In Year 2 to Pilarz and Williams.
-

Except it wasn't bait. Real Chili was a big Wojo guy for awhile. Finally came to his sense after about 6 years. Kind of like you TAMU!

I don't think RC's post had anything to do with being a "Wojo guy" or not. I doubt he forgot how divided the board was during the last extension.

Oh, and he really likes Skyline Chili.

Came away thinking Shaka would be a great guy to work with. I hope talented recruits would think the same. He's completely shattered my expectations for what MU could do the last two years, and I'm happy that the admin made their move. When do we find out the $$$?

Not until Marquette's tax filings become pubic. Probably around this time next year we'll start to get an idea of what double Big East Champs & NCOY is worth.

Even then, difficult. Need the contract. Deferrals, timing n such can much the “reporting” all up.

yep.. his initial contract was structured in a way that paid him very little year 1 because of the wojo buyouts, and Smart is in a position where he didn't "need" the money up front like other coaches would have wanted.
Plus i would bet the "remaining" first contract is probably moved around again for this new one. I expect the university signed this contract longer than "expected", albeit by 1 year until 2030, as a way to gain a sense of fanatical stability for the the rest of the athletic department. Plus shaka smart is young, he is 8 month younger than Shaheen Holloway, who was this "great young hire" 1 year ago.

That's amazing. It seems like Shaka has been part of college hoops forever, but as you say he's still a young guy. One with an incredibly bright (and prosperous) future!
-
Milwaukee Business Journal reporting this a.m. that Shaka intends to raze his 1930s lakefront house in Fox Point and build new on-site.
The building board's approval came a week after Marquette announced it would extend Smart's contract through the 2029-'30 season.

If he is razing his home, and building a new one ( costing I’m sure many millions of dollars) … it would seem he is here for a LONG time …
MU has I think found our version of
Jay Wright … a guy that will stay put, build a true program and ( let’s pray )
get to a few FF or even an NC

Agree.
The fact that the old home is being razed and a new one is being built on the lot is a much greater commitment in terms of time and energy related to the decisions involved (it's more than just a big $ decision) vs. simply buying another existing lakefront home. Those here who has had a home built know what I am talking about from their firsthand experience. To me, it is evidence that Shaka is thinking in terms of a nice, long stay. It certainly would not preclude a move to another school some year in the future, but it sure seems that he's planning to stay a long time.

Didn't Buzz custom build his Quon McMansion, replete with a MU-themed Safe Room?
-
Different deal. Buzz tweaked new construction. Shaka is tearin' down a crib he paid in excess of $3.3 mil for and rebuildin' on da same site. Also, probably won't be residin' in a pup tent for 2 years either. But, the land can't be replicated elsewhere. Location, location, location, aina?
BTW, Shaka sold his Austin bungalow for in excess of $6 mil, hey?
-
Right. Shaka could sell his new house for a lot more than he would've been able to sell this house. I think Shaka's here for the long term. I don't think this because he's building a new house where his current house is.

Indeed .. razing a $3.4m house to build a new one .. that's commitment.
For lookie loos, this is about 10 houses south of Dr. Lovell.

Beleive Dr. Lovell may have a signicant housing allowance in exchange for his house being the summer alternative to the 5th Floor of the AMU.

interesting read from Ben Steele
When Marquette's Shaka Smart needs advice, he often calls basketball legend George Raveling (https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/college/marquette/2023/07/13/shaka-smart-mentor-is-george-raveling-former-coach-and-nike-exec/70405473007/)
small excerpt:Raveling and Smart stayed in touch and soon Smart learned about the incredible experiences of Raveling's life.
Most famously, on Aug. 28, 1963, Raveling attended the March on Washington. As a 6-foot-4 former Villanova player who was then an assistant at his alma mater, Raveling and a friend were asked to help out with security. That was how Raveling ended up being just a few feet away from King as he delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. Raveling asked for King's typewritten copy and he still has it.
